Educators Demand that CDE Support a Real

Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum
PLEASE SIGN AND SHARE

We demand that the California State Board of Education support the integrity of the Ethnic
Studies Model Curriculum written by EXPERTS who are trained (for many, many years) in the
field... (Any response is accepted for "affiliation" on the form (e.g., teacher, professional,
mother, student, etc.)

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for your continued support of Ethnic Studies teachers and educators. who demand an
Ethnic Studies curriculum. These past few years, teacher advocates have worked hard to secure a
sound pedagogical Ethnic Studies model curriculum and for legislation supporting an Ethnic
Studies graduation requirement. The advocacy work for an Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum has
resulted in a political skirmish that has silenced Ethnic Studies teachers and educators who
expect transparency and accountability from our California Department of Education (CDE) in
the revision process.

This month’s meeting of the Instructional Quality Commission (IQC) at the CDE resulted in a
curricular model not centered on the experiences of our students, not aligned to Ethnic Studies,
and with revisions based on political views of those outside of the field of Ethnic Studies and
also of education. The decisions the Commission made are a violation of the most basic ethnic
studies standards/definitions and are also an insult to the civil rights leaders and founders who
established the discipline of Ethnic Studies. This new version of the California Ethnic Studies
Model Curriculum does not fulfill the mandate of AB2016; it is not ethnic studies.

It is not too late to get it right. We did not fight for over 50 years for an Ethnic Studies course to
be designed as simply a multicultural social studies course. It is a critical point in history to
demand that the California State Department of Education work directly with Ethnic Studies
teachers and educators to make the necessary revisions for our students to have access to Ethnic
Studies and not a multicultural class masked as Ethnic Studies.
