time for her family. She appreciates it very much, and
with each day is getting better (please refer to email sent
18 ES Sports Day on Thursday from the ES office).
Holiday for EDSA Revolution Day - No
28 Next week is a busy one in the Elementary school. We
Classes
have two events for parents to attend. The first is an ES
MAR parent coffee on Tuesday February 15 at 7:30 in the
Little Theater. We will begin with a performance of our
1 Faculty In-Service - No Classes Grades 3 and 4 Advanced Strings group. This will be
followed by updates on what has been happening in the
Elementary School, and a discussion on dispositions,
which are characteristics and traits we work to develop
with your children throughout the curriculum. Friday,
February 18 is Sports Day. This is a great team-building
and school spirit day for students, teachers and families.
Your child will participate in a variety of activities
throughout the day beginning with the Opening
Ceremony in the MS gym at 7:45am. The focus of the
day is sportsmanship, participation and active fun!

Family Fun Day was a success. This year there was a lot
more involvement by the Elementary School, which was
great. Our ES student council organized and ran a booth
and students performed on the main stage. Thank you
to all those students who got involved and volunteered
their time.

In the afternoon of the 15th of March we will have our

Student Led Conferences. Please mark this on your
calendars, as it is an opportunity to learn more about
your child's learning and meet with their teacher.

Also, please note that ISM will continue to observe the

EDSA Revolution Anniversary on Monday, February 28 as
stated on our calendar, and not Friday, February 25, the
date declared a holiday by the government.

Yours in Education,

Simon Gillespie Michael Rourke

ES Sports Day
The elementary school annual sports day is now week away! Please join us next Friday February 18th .All families are
invited to attend! All children will bring home a program for ES Sports day today. Students will participate as a class in a
variety of activities. Our focus is understanding that physical activity provides opportunities for health, enjoyment,
challenge and social interaction. We also ask parents to assist the supervisor at each station or participate in the
activities with your child. So please come dressed ready to join in the fun. We also need two parents per grade level to
take photographs on Sports day to be used in the Closing Ceremony slide show. If interested please contact Jen Smith
smithj@ismanila.org before Sports day to go through the protocols for taking photos.

We expect students to display good sportsmanship. Outlined below are some of the sportsmanship issues we discuss
with children. As parents you can play a significant role in helping your child become a good sport.

What parents can do to promote good sportsmanship.

1. Be a good role model for your children. Children learn by example, so

show them how to practice good sportsmanship by not always expecting to
win. Explain that winning is not always an option, but that it is always
appropriate to be a good sport.

Looking for 2. Good sportsmanship is a side effect of having good character. Teach
Parent Volunteers your children how to interact with their elders, coaches and peers with a
positive attitude, one that shows respect for all involved in the game.
We need two parents per grade to
take photographs on Sports Day. If 3. Healthy competition is great, but make sure to emphasize other aspects
interested, please contact Jen Smith of the game. Friendship, skill, exercise and good sportsmanship are major
(smithj@ismanila.org) before Sports factors that contribute to a successful experience. After games ask your
day to go through the protocols for child “Did you enjoy that?” rather than “Did you win?” Remember the
taking photos. number one reason that children consistently give as to why they
participate in sport, is to have fun and be with friends. Emphasize this
aspect in your post game conversations. We want to convey a love of the
game rather than a love of winning if children are to continue to enjoy and
play sports for a lifetime.

4. Acknowledge and praise other team members and members of the opposite team. Likewise, address and correct
negative behavior immediately.

5. Good sportsmanship involves sharing. Even if your child made the winning basket, teach him to include the whole
team in the glory. Remind your child that it takes teamwork to win a game.

We look forward to seeing you on Sports Day 2011
