Sociolinguistics: "Kan-on ug Kaysaysayan"

1. What words in the song were familiar to you and why? Write these down.
(Unsang mga pulong sa kanta ang duol sa imong kasinatian?)

Banig, Bahay kubos, Butiki, Balut, Karaoke, Kalesa

These words were so familiar to me because this are Tagalog words which is our very own language here
in the Philippines.

2. What words were not familiar or strange to you and why? Write these down.
(Unsang mga pulong ang layo sa imong kasinatian?)

The word gecko I didn’t know gecko is a lizard.

Exercise 3.
“Kan-on”
- To eat
- Rice

Exercise 4.

These words remind me of being a Filipino where I grew up its morals and values. Being Filipino
means being a part of a wonderful culture. A culture filled with amazing foods, beautiful languages and
having a great homeland to go to. When I tell you the food is amazing, it is so good. Seriously, once you
taste it, you will fall in love with it and we Filipinos loves to eat. The simplicity of living wherein people
are contented with what they own. You see, there are a lot of other ethnic groups in the Philippines, and
each ethnic group has its own distinct trait.  English and Tagalog (Filipino dialect) are the two main
languages here in the Philippines but not everyone knows how to speak Tagalog for some many reasons,
one is they were born and raised outside the Philippines and their parents didn’t introduce nor taught
them Tagalog, and two is many people in the Philippines came from different cultures and spoken
different dialects who can’t speak Tagalog but can speak English very well. And lastly, they’re maybe
came from the rich families who only wanted their children to speak English and not Tagalog. But for me
not knowing Tagalog does not make you less of a Filipino, but knowing how to speak it gives a clearer
view of this country we live in. This Philippines, with its endless array of languages, all unique in their
own, with meanings that, just like English, cannot be encompassed by the Tagalog language alone.

So, for me Sociolinguistics approaches language from the social aspects - why do different
demographic groups speak in a different way, to put it short. How does age, sex, gender, city of
residence, acquired education, workplace affect how one speaks.
