An educational institution is a venue where students of different ages are trained to become
responsible and knowledgeable citizens that will one day contribute to the betterment of the
society. It is important for the institution to always take into consideration and put into action their
mission and vision in order to continue pushing forward until they achieve the purpose of the
school’s existence. Core values are also just as crucial, for they direct and guide the institution’s
decisions and actions.

St. Scholastica’s College Tacloban in an educational institution, providing quality education

through Christian and Benedictine values, creating outstanding professionals with good morals, love
for God and His people. This institution carries distinctive or unique values that is always embedded
in their actions. Christ-centeredness, humility, community, service, silence and good speech, and
stewardship, are some but the most distinctive qualities present in SSCT.

What values are distinctive to our educational institution?

Christ-centeredness, apart from providing good quality education, our educational
institution enables students to enhance their spiritual life and to deepen their relationship with
God. The school encourages us to always include prayer in our daily lives, such as before and after
our classes or before we eat our food. We are also being taught in our CLE subject about values and
morals that can help us grow into more responsible and mature people in Christ.

Humility is simply acknowledging flaws and shortcomings without losing hope and accepting
gifts and talents without being arrogant. It teaches us that we are not always right, and that we do
not have all the answers. This value is seen through the way our school deals with our victories, our
shortcomings, our wins and losses. For example, before we enter into competitions, we are taught
to pray and ask God for guidance, and whether we win or lose, we lay it all up to His will.

Community is the distinctive value that makes students tolerable, understanding and patient
in every worst-case scenario while still being able to work together as a team. St. Scholastica trains
its students to become flexible and to learn to interact and cooperate with other students to give
them a better understanding of respect and love for one another.

Silence and good speech are also distinctive values that makes a huge difference in every
situation; everyone must learn to speak gently and modestly with reason and truth, because
anything can make a situation worse if handled terribly. In this institution, we are taught to never
open our mouths if only bad and harmful things are the only ones that will come out of it. We are
instead encouraged to spread gentle and kind words to one another to uplift and motivate each
other.

Stewardship is a unique value that our school puts a lot of emphasis in. It teaches us to
respect the environment and take care of material things, just as all of these things are gifted to us
by God. In our school, we are always reminded to keep our classrooms clean by assigning cleaners
for the day, to throw our garbage in the proper bins, to clean every after a school event, and to
recycle reusable materials for better uses.
Aside from the many hallmarks or values that are being exercised in the institution, there are some
values that must be prioritized first before the others.

What values should be the direction of the management of the institution?

One value should be service. This may be common knowledge, but it has a huge impact on
the institution, because it is not just serving itself, but rather serving the community as a whole.
Service, after all, is an expression of our love for Christ by serving others. In this Benedictine school,
service must always be present when managing this institution. This will not only benefit the
community, but will also be a great opportunity to encourage learners to offer up their services for
others in the future. Their service must be the first mission or vision to attract the attention of many
who will be the key to a successful management in the institution. In addition, it is also important to
put it into our hearts because service is one of the core values which will help you guide yourself and
to impart knowledge to others. In relation to business or management, it helps you consider the
need of the clients or you can be able to provide fair treatment.

The institution should also focus on continuing to implement stewardship in its

management. This value does not only limit to promoting the well-being of the environment and
material objects, but also covers the well-being of individuals in institution. In this Benedictine
school, we are encouraged to not only take care of our things, but to look after each other as well.
Through service, we will also be taking care of each other.

Summary of the WHO Health System Framework

The World Health Organization aims to provide a quality healthcare facility towards the
population. To address the heath strengthening agenda, the WHO argued that in order for health
systems to be strengthened, it is important to identify and to be clear of what the problems are, and
what improvements are to be made, in order to achieve the desired outcomes. As a result, they
developed a framework that defines the health system through the six building blocks which
comprises of leadership or governance, health financing, health workforce, medical
products/technologies, information and research, and service delivery. These six building blocks
are necessary in order to obtain the desired outcome of the organization which are improved
health, responsiveness, financial risk protection and improved efficiency. With this framework, the
WHO gives us an idea of what makes up a well-functioning health system that can provide quality
and adequate healthcare service to the community, physical resources which are necessary in terms
of delivering health services such as medicines, medical equipment and the human resources. In
addition, the health system, with the help of these building blocks, can identify and respond quickly
to the issues and they are about to face. As a result, the community will attain the improved
healthcare that they deserve.
