PART ONE: FNAL PROJECT – MULTICULTURAL LESSON PLAN Students will

design an original lesson plan on a subject matter that integrates diversity into the
classroom. Students will identify the grade level, topic and goal of the lesson.

Lesson Plan Title: A trip around the world!

Subject: History
Grade Level: 3rd
Concept / Topic to Teach: To teach different celebrations that are celebrated around the world
by different people.
General Goal(s): Understanding that the United States is made up of several different cultures
that celebrate different celebrations.
Specific Objectives:
-Students will be able to identify two or more international celebrations that we have been
celebrating for several years.
-Students will learn the significance of the celebrations.
-Students will learn how and why they are celebrated
Required Materials:
Markers, color pencils
PowerPoint
Poster paper
Construction paper
cut-outs of
-Sugar skull- The Day of The Dead
-Dragon- Chinese New Year
-Parade mask- Bazillion Carnival
-Candle- Diwali
-Air Balloon- Balloon Fiesta
Homework sheet
Plan For Independent Practice: Students will be given a homework assignment that has the
names of the celebrations we learn about and they will be asked to write three paragraphs about
what they have learned, what they found interesting, and which one was their favorite
celebration.
Assessment Based On Objectives:
As a class we will be going over a PowerPoint that includes five celebrations from around the
world that people have been celebrating from all around the world for years, we will be
watching short videos about the celebrations so that the students can get a visual of what people
do, eat, how they dress and see how various people attend the celebrations. Throughout the
PowerPoint, we will be having class discussions about the celebrations. After the lesson, the
students will be creating a collage that includes the five celebrations we learned about. They will
be given small cut-outs of pictures that go with the celebration, they will color and glue them
around the poster paper in the middle, they will leave space to later glue their writing assignment
that was given to do at home.
At the top of their collage, they will write the name of the lesson (A Trip Around the World.)
The students will be writing the names of the celebrations and where they take place. At the
bottom of the poster, they will write "we are all one" referring to how the United States is made
up of several different people that celebrate numerous celebrations from all around the world
making us one diverse nation.
Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): We will end the lesson with a discussion about how the
United States is made up of several different people that come from all around the world and
that's why they all have different celebrations to celebrate. The students will share their thoughts
and opinions about the celebrations.

Possible Connections to Other Subjects:

Writing

Step-by-step procedures
Step 1: Welcome the class back from their lunch and once they are all in their chairs, address
that we will start our lesson by saying
“Today we will be doing our multicultural lesson that has to do with history.”
Step 2: Ask the students to gather around the carpet.
Step 3: Open the PowerPoint to show the first slide of the title.
Step 4: Once everyone is at the carpet address that the lesson will be about celebrations from all
over the world. Then ask the students if they know what a celebration is.
Step 5: Have students volunteer, pick on a few students to answer the question.
Step 6: After discussing what a celebration is, move on to reviewing the general goal and the
specific objectives with the class.
Step 7: Next, move to the slide that has the five celebrations listed and read them to the class.
Step 8: After reading them, ask the class if they know anything about the celebrations and have a
discussion with the students so they can share their thoughts.
Step 9: After the discussion is over, move on to the first slide that addresses the first celebration
which is the Brazilian Carnival. Read the topics that are in bold such as the Significance, Type of
Celebration, Begins, Ends, and What do People do.
Step 10: After that is done, tell the students that they will be watching a short video about the
celebration. After the video is done have a class discussion that addresses the thoughts and
opinions that the students have on the celebration.
Step 11: Repeat steps 9 and 10 for the next four celebrations.

Step 12: After you have gone over all the celebrations and had discussions and answered any
questions that the students have. Address that they will be having a homework assignment.
Step 13: Explain the homework assignment, address that they will be taking a sheet home that
has all the celebrations listed on them with some facts that we have learned. Explain that they
will be writing three paragraphs that answer the questions, what you found interesting, what did
you learn, and what was your favorite celebration and why it was?
Step 14: Next move on to explaining the activity that they will be doing and ask if they know
what a collage is.
“For this activity, you will be making a collage, do you guys know what a collage is?”
Step 15: Ask the students to share their thoughts on what a collage is
Step 16: Explain the activity
“Everyone will get a piece of poster paper and cut-outs of pictures that are related to the
celebrations, you will match the pictures with the right celebrations and write their name and
where it takes place next to the picture when you glue it on the poster and don’t forget to write
your name on your poster. We will leave space in the middle that will be where we glue our
writing assignment.”

Step 17: Show the students an example of how their collage is supposed to look so they know
where to leave space for their writing assignment and name. Show them the example on the
PowerPoint before passing out the materials.
Step 18: Explain that at the bottom of the paper we will write “we are all one,” and ask them if
they can guess what it is referring to? Have a short discussion addressing the students thoughts
and then state
“It is because at the end of the day we all come from different backgrounds/cultures/religions,
and we all make up the United States, that's why we are one.”
Step 19: Have students help you pass out the materials.
Each student should have 5 different cut-outs, poster paper, and construction paper to put in the
middle, show them the example on the PowerPoint.
Step 20: Walk around helping the students and answering any questions that they might have.
Step 21: Give the students 15min to work on the activity. Leave the example up on the board so
students can use it as a reference.
Step 22: After the time is up, have the students pick up and place their work on the back table.
Step 23: When everyone is done, call them to the carpet to close the lesson.
Step 24: Have a discussion with the class.
“Let's talk about your last thoughts about the lesson, what you have learned today, and what festival
you would like to go to.”
