First Latino Dreamer wins Rhodes Scholarship

By Nora Neus, CNN – Nov. 26, 2020

In second grade, Santiago Potes walked into Marina Esteva's gifted

and talented classroom at Sweetwater Elementary School in Miami,
Florida, for the first time.

He was an undocumented immigrant from Colombia who entered

the country when he was 4 years old. Esteva said she quickly noticed
his intelligence and wanted to nurture him toward success.

Now, Potes is the first Latino DACA recipient to be awarded a

prestigious Rhodes Scholarship.

On Saturday, the Rhodes Trust announced that Potes, a 2020 graduate

of Columbia University in New York, would be one of the 2021 Rhodes
Scholars. Potes traces all his success back to Esteva, the teacher
he saw twice a week from second to fifth grade in elementary
school... Read Full Article

Please donate to our Winter 2020 California-Mexico Dreamers Study
Abroad Program and National Campaign to Restore DACA's
Advance Parole fundraising efforts!

The California-Mexico Studies Center (CMSC) is the only

organization dedicated to the full restoration of DACA's Advance
Parole to help Dreamers reunite with their families abroad in times
of need, AND to expand their education and careers by studying
abroad.

Your support matters, and makes a difference!

In case you didn't know...

The office of Senator and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris

already began to advocate for the expedited approval of all I-131
Advance Parole applications from Winter 2020 California-Mexico
Dreamers Study Abroad Program participants.
To support our program, the CMSC launched a new fund drive
initiative until December 31, 2020 to solicit sponsors and grants in
support of the Winter 2020 California-Mexico Dreamers Study
Abroad Program, which will allow 83 DACA recipients to travel to
Mexico with DACA’s Advance Parole permit, immerse in a unique U.S.-
Mexico national security study abroad program, and reconnect with their
family and cultural roots.

But we need to raise about $50,000 to cover the increased costs of

the program and ensure the safety of all participants while
traveling in Mexico during the pandemic. The additional costs are
related to increased expenses due to doubling the cost for single-room
hotel accommodations and all transportation costs due to social-
distancing, COVID-19 pre- and post-testing, and 24/7 medical attention
and prevention protocols.

Thus, we urge our community, Dreamers’ supporters, corporate

and business sponsors, community and church groups, and
academic colleagues to help us raise $50,000 by the end of the year
with donations of any amount, or by sponsoring at least one
Dreamer participant at $500 each.

California continues census fight over undocumented
immigrants as Supreme Court hears case

BY KIM BOJÓRQUEZ, THE SACRAMENTO BEE – NOV. 30, 2020

California continued its push to count undocumented immigrants in the

census Monday as the U.S. Supreme Court raised questions about
whether it’s constitutional for President Donald Trump to exclude them.

Trump’s July memorandum to exclude unauthorized immigrants from

the count used to determine congressional representation has
significant implications for California, a state home to more than 2
million undocumented immigrants.

It stands to lose one to two congressional seats if those immigrants are

not counted, according to the Public Policy Institute of California senior
fellow Eric McGhee... Read Full Article
