Module 6 Assignment:

Career Plan Template

Section 1: Creating your BHAG

Following the information in the “Good to Great Connections” PowerPoint presentation and all

of the additional information provided under the Module 4 content area, and taking your Personal

Mission Statement development efforts into consideration, carefully develop your own personal

long term BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***). The timeframe for

your BHAG is 10-25 years out, however it will depend upon your age. For example, a 55 year

old person might be closer to the 10 year BHAG, whereas a 30 year old or younger person

should be considering a BHAG 25 years out. This BHAG may be related to your overall

life/lifestyle aspirations, or it could be related to some organizational, protean, or

entrepreneurial vision you have for the future. Dig deep and and go beyond the job. That is up to

you. What it needs to be is BIG! HUGE! REALLY HAIRY! STRETCH YOURSELF! LOOK

BEYOND GRADUATE DEGREE! LOOK BEYOND A JOB! HOW WILL YOU MAKE A

DIFFERENCE IN THIS WORLD???? I RECOMMEND WE MEET TO DISCUSS IT TO

ENSURE ITS HUGENESS.

Answer the following:

1) What is your BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***)?

My BHAG is to secure a safe living space for everyone. Anyone and everyone deserves

to have a roof over their head so that they can attempt to live their lives.

2) Why is this your BHAG?

1
Theodore Evans

Homelessness is a chronic issue plaguing not only the United States but the entire world.

There are many people that are without a safe place to sleep and keep their things and

that is a truly difficult situation to change on your own. As someone that has not had a

secure roof over my head at one point in my life, I can say from experience that it is one

of the most difficult things to live through. Being able to have a place to eat, sleep, and

take care of basic needs is essential for every person’s life and I want to be able to

somehow provide that for every person that needs support. Because there are so many

people in need, this is a hefty goal that is more than likely not something that I can

accomplish but I can at least create a groundwork for future generations so that they can

get there one day.

3) How does your BHAG align with your vision statement from Module 4?

“To serve others in the most effective and meaningful way possible by becoming the best

version of myself that I can be.”

My vision statement describes how I would ideally like to live my life. I want to

continue to improve myself, as I think I can create the most impactful change possible as

a person that is continuing to learn, grow, and evolve. A leader has to be able to inspire

and encourage others to do the same and I cannot do that without making the

commitment to myself first. Because my BHAG is quite the challenge in itself, I have to

be able to be the type of person that is willing to change and become better day by day so

that I can get one step closer to achieving this goal. By living my vision statement, I put

myself in the best position possible to serve others.

4) How does your BHAG align with your mission statement from Module 4?

“I am dedicated to making the world a better place by utilizing my skills as

2
Theodore Evans

a leader to help others become the best people they can be.”

My BHAG and my mission statement are similar in a lot of ways. I want to give people

the best chance possible to live their lives to the fullest and a huge step in being able to

do that is to have secure housing. By giving people a place to call home, they are given

an opportunity to focus on more than just their basic needs and take more opportunities

and explore the world in a better way. It is almost impossible to try to make substantial

change in one’s life when they are so focused on just meeting their basic needs like

getting enough sleep and brushing their teeth, so by having a roof over their head, it gives

people a much better opportunity to make improvements in their lives and work toward a

better tomorrow.

5) List your top five (5) obstacles in order from number 5 being least difficult and

number 1 being most difficult you need to overcome in order to obtain your BHAG

and explain the relevance of each one.

1. Amount of Need - The number of homeless people in just the United States alone

rises every year. The number of people that are going to need resources and

support is only continuing to grow and that will be the main reason why this is

going to be such a difficult BHAG to accomplish. Circumstances will make it so

that people will end up without a place to go and that is going to happen faster

than I will likely be able to support in my lifetime. However, this is exactly why I

want to do this type of work because there are so many people in need and even

though I will not be able to help literally every single person, I will be able to help

as many as I can.

3
Theodore Evans

2. Resources/Funding - Clearly, this type of endeavor is going to take a lot of money

and a lot of accumulated resources. Having the necessary resources to make

something like giving homes to people that need one is going to cost a lot of

money and I am going to have to find people that are willing to invest in this work

in order to get it up and running. I think once I have an operation going that there

will be plenty of resources available but until I am established, it is not going to

be an easy feat to get there.

3. Manpower/Support - Not only am I going to need funding but I will also need

people that are dedicated to the same mission and goals that I am in order to make

everything happen. I may be a one man show for now but it is going to take the

support of multiple people to really make this type of dream a reality. Finding the

right people that have a similar mindset and are as dedicated to a cause like this

that I am is going to take a lot of time and effort.

4. Time - Ideally, the type of organization that I would run in order to accomplish

my BHAG would be a nonprofit that can be funded by donations. The time it

takes to become a certified 501 c(3) alone takes a couple of years, as the

application process is extensive. Getting an operation such as this to just the

starting point is going to prove to be difficult, so time is going to be an obstacle as

I would like to do things as quickly as possible but I know that this is just a reality

I am going to have to accept. This will not mean that I cannot do other things in

the meantime but it will hinder my ability to cover as much ground as possible

because navigating bureaucracy takes time and there is nothing I can do about

that.

4
Theodore Evans

5. Education - I see this as my least difficult obstacle, as I do not have all the

education I need at this time, but I am certainly capable of getting it. Getting

higher education is also not a requirement for me to be able to reach my BHAG

but I know that it will prove to be beneficial to me in the long run, so I truly see it

as a necessary step in my journey. This would take a couple more years after I

finish my Bachelor’s degree but it is not something I consider difficult to get, just

time consuming.

Section 2: Career Vision

Consider your long-term vision for your career. Respond to the following questions, and make

connections to your personal mission statement, your BHAG(s), the themes you developed in

Module 4, and the textbook/supplemental readings (as applicable).

Answer the following:

1) Analyze the type of career you want to have, in terms of an organizational career or

a protean career, make sure it is clear you understand the concepts as outlined in

the textbook. Why?

Much of what I want to do requires a lot of knowledge and experience that I want to

apply to my own organization, so I see myself transitioning from an organizational career

to a protean career at some point in my life. What I see myself doing is continuing to

have an organizational career for the next five to ten years and also obtain higher

education. I am not sure if that entails more than a graduate degree at this time but that is

5
Theodore Evans

my current goal for now. I want to work for different organizations and see how they

operate so that I can gain a better understanding of how I would want to run my own

organization one day. Not only that, much of what I hope to see is how leaders (CEOs,

VPs, etc) instill the vision of the organization into their staff and keep them motivated.

This is something I have struggled with in the past, so being able to really hone in on

inspiring others is what I think I still have the most to learn about. I want to have an

organization full of people that all understand why they are there and what difference

they are making in other people’s lives. It’s one thing to know that you are doing

something to help others but to be able to verbalize what it is that you are doing for others

and the palpable change that you see is so much more meaningful. Work for established

organizations is what I see as the best way for me to be able to learn and grow as a leader

while preparing myself for my ideal role later on in my career.

2) Analyze your career with an explanation as one that moves you up the organization

or one you develop seeking alternative career paths. If you see yourself taking an

alternative career path, which one(s) sound the most likely? Why?

Currently, I see myself as someone that will work for various companies over the next

five to ten years and progressively move up the organizational ladder. I have done so in

every organization that I have worked for so far in my career and each opportunity has

given me new insight and knowledge. I have actually taken steps in the past to lower my

position when moving from organizations because of other things that I needed to

prioritize and I noticed how much reflection I was able to do once I was back in a more

frontline role with less people to supervise. It helped me see the importance of having

leaders that are encouraging and positive and how much everyone gets out of their jobs if

6
Theodore Evans

they have superiors that motivate them to do better and improve. Because of this, I want

to continue to move up the ladder in the organizations I work for, with the expectation

that I will continue to learn how to be a more inspiring leader. Once I reach a certain

point that I have not yet identified, I would then work toward starting my own

organization, which would take a number of years. This would not necessarily be a

different career path but it would be a different level of job than I expect to have had

prior, as I do not expect to have the chance to be a CEO or President of any organization

in the near future.

3) Discuss and explain if you see yourself working an alternative or flexible work

schedule/arrangement? If so, which ones and why?

My ideal work week is working Sunday-Thursday and having Fridays and Saturdays to

myself. I have done so in the past and I found it to be the most beneficial for me to be

able to accomplish what I need to do in my personal life. I have mainly worked in

management positions that are salaried which means that I may end up working every

day of the week, if necessary, so I know that dreaming of an ideal schedule is not realistic

at this point in my career. I know that my hours will fluctuate and that what is being

asked of me in higher level positions will require that I work longer hours at times and I

am ready and willing to do so. Once I reach the point in my career where I move away

from a more organizational career, I know that this will be even more true than it is now.

I may have more control over when I specifically have to work but I know that I will

have to commit a lot of my time to build an organization from the ground up.

4) Research and post current, or past, job postings from your local area, across the

country, or from around the world which illustrate how you might reach your

7
Theodore Evans

BHAG. Be sure to provide the Job Title, a small description and why it supports

your BHAG when you provide the URL. Websites such as CareerBuilder, Monster,

or Indeed might be a good place to begin. Also, career-specific websites such as

SHRM.org or AICPA.org often have job postings. Provide 2 listings for each of the

following time periods:

a. 2 years from today

i. District Manager (Starbucks)

1. A district manager is responsible for managing site managers, who

also have their own teams. They oversee people that also have a

leadership role and have a lot of responsibility regarding how

things operate in regard to the vision of the company. They are a

messenger while also the person that does a lot of curating and

delegation of responsibilities. I have experience as a Program

Director and Manager, so this type of job would be the next logical

step in learning how to lead larger teams.

ii. Senior Program Director (YMCA)

8
Theodore Evans

1. This type of position oversees multiple programs or sites and has

multiple direct and as well as indirect reports. This type of leader

may oversee a variety of different programs that are all intertwined

in achieving a larger goal or mission for the organization. With so

many moving parts under their belt, SPDs have to learn how to

develop others and motivate them, which is exactly what I am

looking to do more of.

b. 5 years from today

i. Regional Manager (Atlas Group)

1. Regional Managers oversee a vast number of managers and have

multiple levels of direct and indirect reports under their umbrella.

This type of leader is responsible for implementing large company

initiatives and is the gatekeeper of how operations are run. This is

a leadership role that requires a person to be able to connect with

multiple levels of employees and management on either side and it

would be a great learning experience for me in understanding how

to manage a large portfolio.

ii. Director of Human Resources (Stanford University)

9
Theodore Evans

1. An HR Director is responsible for overseeing the wellbeing of a

company as well as all of its employees. They act as a neutral

entity that exists to enforce rules and regulations and ensure that a

company is following all state and federal laws. This would be a

great job that would help me understand more about how an

organization has to run based on laws and regulations, which

would be invaluable knowledge to have.

c. 10 years from today

i. Executive Director (Chamber of Commerce)

1. This type of executive would be responsible for a somewhat

smaller operation but would still have a board of directors to report

to. While this would not be on the same level as a CEO, it is

exactly the type of position that I would look for if I found an

organization that is the right size and has a mission I believe in.

ii. VP of Operations (SHRM)

1. This type of position in a larger organization would report to the

Chief Operations Officer and would have a vast portfolio under

them. This type of position would be working directly with the top

dogs and would have to have in-depth knowledge of how to

10
Theodore Evans

manage large budgets and how to engage with all levels of an

organization. This type of position would be ideal for me to have

as a final preparation for starting my own organization because a

CEO type role would be the next logical step.

criptions/pages/vice-president,-operations.aspx

d. BHAG Achievement Year

i. CEO (Keystone Center)

1. As the Chief Executive Officer, this position oversees all aspects

of an organization and has all executive staff reporting under them.

They would report directly to a board of directors that dictate how

the mission of the organization is achieved. This is what I envision

for myself once I have an organization actually in place to run.

ii. President/CEO (United Way)

1. Again, the CEO is the person that is responsible for all aspects of

an organization. They would also be responsible for recruiting

potential board members so that they have a diverse team of people

overseeing the wellbeing of the organization. This position would

have to make tough decisions in times of turmoil and is the main

face of the organization. They would have to live and breathe the

mission of the organization and all communications from this

11

person would have to be geared towards inspiring others and

putting the mission of the organization forward.

Section 3: Long-Term Strategy

Develop a strategy for moving toward your ideal future work/life situation and the realization of

your BHAG(s). Consider the timeframe for your BHAG(s). Provide a vivid description of life

“the way it will be” once your BHAG is realized.

1) Critically think about and then list out (not a narrative format) the interim steps or

milestones you have laid out for yourself that will aid you in reaching your BHAG

(you should have at least 10 to earn a rating of excellent and be referenced by time)

1. Bachelor’s Degree - by 2020

2. HR certification - by 2021

3. Graduate Degree (Public or Nonprofit Administration) - by 2023

4. Regional Manager or HR Director position - by 2023

5. Senior VP type of position - by 2025

6. Identify and recruit key senior leaders for organization - by 2027

7. Save $100,000 to invest into starting organization - by 2028

8. Identify and recruit board members - by 2028

9. Secure $$$ from potential investors - by 2028

10. Secure an office space as base of operations in local community - by 2029

11. Secure larger space for temporary housing needs - by 2030

12. Partner with local community college or adult education center to provide

services - by 2030

2) In addition to career-related roles, consider your other life roles in relation to your

career goals. Revisit your responses to the Identities Exercise that you completed in

13
Theodore Evans

Module 1 of the course. Based on your long-term strategy what are the 3 most

precious things you are willing to sacrifice, besides time, to achieve your BHAG?

Why?

1. My ability to have a family

a. One of my greatest wishes for a number of years has been to have a family.

Most of my immediate family is now deceased and I have always wanted to

have kids since I was a teenager, so it is something I’ve thought about for over

ten years. Unfortunately, the type of organization I want to start does not

align very well with my dream of a family, as working in the nonprofit sector

usually requires a ridiculous amount of commitment and time. In my quest to

have kids, I do understand that it is a possibility that I may not find a great

time to focus on having a family, as I will be hyper-focused on getting my

organization up and running. I find this to be the hardest thing that I would

have to give up in order to get my BHAG going and it may be the one thing

that prevents me from doing so. I know that I may feel differently in the

future and my desire to have a family may outweigh my BHAG at some point

in my life. For now, that is not the case, so I am going to continue my quest to

reach my BHAG.

2. The idea that my potential organization can work on more than a local level

a. During my quest to start my organization, I know that it is completely possible

that I may have to give up the idea that it can work on more than a local level.

I would love to see my organization spread across the country and help people

in every state but I know that this is not a likely scenario that is going to play

14
Theodore Evans

out. What I understand is that at some point during the development and

growth of this organization is that I may have to switch my priorities so that

more focus and resources can be given to the local operation. This is

something that I would hate to do, as it does not fully align with my vision,

but it is going to be important for me to remember that helping some people is

better than helping no one at all. I would not want to jeopardize the existence

of my organization solely because I want to focus on expanding when that is

just not a feasible option.

3. A job with a substantial income

a. One thing that I have dreamed of being someone that has not had a lot of

money in my adult life is to have a job that has a high-level salary. I know

that if I stayed with corporations that have national and international

operations I would be able to have positions that pay me really well. While

this may be something that I have for at least some time in my career, I know

that once I get to the point of starting my organization, I will not be making a

competitive salary for the job I am doing. A startup organization is not going

to have an excessive amount of funds to pay me and I have to accept that. I

know that I may even have to forgo getting paid in the beginning, as we will

have little to no cash flow available to pay almost anyone. The higher paying

jobs I have before I start the organization will be able to help me save to get it

off the ground and that is what is most important to me. While I may not have

a great salary forever, I can enjoy it for the time that I have it and use my extra

income for something better in the future.

Section 4: The one to two year plan

Using a SMART goals-based approach, as well as project planning and management skill best

practices, create a detailed project plan for at least two specific goals. At least one must be

related to your long-term BHAG. The other may be related to some other aspect of your career

development or career-life integration. Both of these goals need to be things that you are

passionate about accomplishing.

Your selected goals and SMART plan (see SMART goal information provided in the module)

should be structured based on a one to two-year timeline. It should include specific milestones,

action items, sub-tasks as well as task-related interdependencies as applicable. With respect to

each goal, critically think about what specifically are the things you will do in the next one to

two years to achieve these goals.

Develop a clear and detailed SMART plan, with facilitating goals and steps/actions required

to accomplish your selected goals. It should be evident, by looking at the format and structure

of your plan, that you have developed some significant skills respect to project management.

Include Gantt charts (T) or other visual project representations as you see fit, and be sure to

address your approach to tracking/measuring your progress (M).

1) What is your #1 Goal? (at least one of the following must be related to your BHAG)

16
Theodore Evans

Become a Store Manager for Starbucks. I currently work as a Shift Supervisor and now

that I have completed my Bachelor’s degree, I am ready to once again take on the role of

a manager/supervisor.

a. Specific

The position I want is specifically with Starbucks, as I have worked for the

company for the past two years and now want to continue my development. I will

need to work directly with my current manager and my district manager in order

to develop a development plan to make this happen. This would be a great

opportunity for me to now take everything I have learned in the OGL program

and apply it to my skills as a leader.

b. Measurable (explain how you’ll measure your progress or completion)

One way to measure this goal and know if I have successfully achieved it is by

getting the promotion or not. If I do not receive the promotion, then I have to go

back as to why that is and then work specifically on meeting those expectations so

that I can achieve this goal later. If there are no openings for the position, that is

one thing but if I do not have the correct leadership qualities, that is another.

c. Attainable

I have held a position that is equivalent in responsibilities before and have even

managed a team larger than what would be expected of me in this role. I have

also spent the last year preparing for this potential transition with my current

manager, so I know that this is something I am ready to pursue.

d. Relevant

17
Theodore Evans

This position is my next step in my leadership journey. I will now be able to take

the knowledge I have gained from this program and apply it directly to a job that I

am excited about doing. I will also get the chance to take on a new team and do

my best to develop them and inspire them to become better leaders and make their

own goals a reality. This is my next logical step in developing myself for

becoming a nonprofit CEO one day.

e. Time-Based

I intend for this goal to be complete by June 2021. I have been working with my

manager prior to this plan so I believe this is definitely a reasonable timeframe.

2) What is your #2 Goal? (at least one of these must be related to your BHAG)

I will find a graduate program that I want to complete, apply for it, and begin the program

by the beginning of 2022.

a. Specific

18
Theodore Evans

While I currently do not know what program I specifically want to do at this time,

I do have about three to four graduate degrees I am interested in applying for.

The top two contenders are public administration and nonprofit management

programs, which depending on the school, can also be combined. This type of

program will contain exactly what I need in order to become more prepared to run

a nonprofit later on in my career.

b. Measurable

The measurement here will be whether or not I get accepted into any of the

programs that I apply for. If I do not get accepted into any of the programs I

apply for, then I will have to extend my timeline a bit and then rework my

applications so that are more of what the admissions are looking for.

c. Attainable

I do have a pretty extensive working background and I have done well at ASU, so

I think that this will aid me well in being accepted into at least one program that I

apply to. The next logical step after getting a Bachelor’s degree is to get a

graduate degree, so unless for whatever reason there is something out of my

control that prevents me from doing so, I will plan on getting at least a graduate

degree.

d. Relevant

A degree in either nonprofit management or public administration would be

exactly the type of higher level education I would need to properly run a nonprofit

organization. This level of education would be much more extensive and specific

than my undergraduate degree and would aid me greatly in having a better

19
Theodore Evans

understanding of what I will need to do in order to get my potential organization

up and running. While doing more schooling is not exactly my favorite idea, I

know that this is going to be a much more engaging and specific form of

education than I have ever had before.

e. Time-Based

My expectation for this goal is to have completed applications and start a graduate

program in January 2022. Applications will need to be submitted prior to this

depending on deadlines and everything else will need to be done prior to that.
