Comparative Studies on the Extraction of Chitin-Chitosan from

Golden Apple Snail Shells at the Control Field

Golden apple snails are one of the numerous problems and enemies farmers
are facing. They are a common freshwater snail that is highly invasive and causes
damage to rice crops. The invasion of golden apple snails has increased the cost of
rice production and threatens direct-seed rice promotion in rice-growing countries.

Chitosan is a non-toxic, biodegradable polymer produced from exoskeletons

of crustaceans. Chitin-chitosan was then extracted and characterized from waste
apple snail shells through methods of deproteinization, demineralisation, and
deacetylation. It is one of the most useful bio-polymers which have the properties of
polysaccharide such as biocompatibility, biodegradability and non-toxicity. The
results of this study showed that method 1 with the use of a mechanical stirrer has
1.99% of chitin and 42.56% of chitosan. Method 2 where boiling at high
temperatures was conducted and method 3 where variables were soaked up for a
long time in the static reactor have 0.55% of chitin and 0.03% of chitosan, 23.02% of
chitosan and 15.06% of chitosan respectively.

The main purpose of this study was to examine the comparison of chitin-
chitosan extraction methods from golden apple snail shells. Chitin-chitosan are
natural bio-polymers that are environmentally friendly and harmless to creatures.
This study therefore aimed to determine which among various methods of extraction
is the most successful method for extracting chitin-chitosan from golden apple snail
shells.

The Impact of Social Media on Student Life

The world of today is a global village. In this vast network generated by the
Internet, everyone is connected to one another. As Marshall McLuhan, a philosopher
of communication theory said in the image of a global village, “the new electronic
independence re-creates the world." This electronic independence is inherently
dependent on the internet. By spreading knowledge internationally, it illuminates the
lives of thousands of individuals, thus making us global citizens.

There are many reasons that explain why students love spending time
socializing. Firstly, students are given the freedom by social networks to do anything
they want. Students can create other online identities that the real world does not
allow. Never before has it been so easy for young minds to create a digital image of
their actions through such a spontaneous medium. But this has a darker side that
has gained the attention of many eminent people all over the world. Many of
psychologists are worried about the crisis of identity that our current generation may
be facing today. People's lives, particularly students, are strongly influenced by what
is posted on their profiles by other people. By spending time on social networking
websites rather than studying or interacting with individuals in person, students
neglect their studies. Participating in social networking actively and frequently can
negatively affect student’s grades or hinder journeys of future careers. It can lead to
an addiction that inculcates bad habits by getting too involved in social media.

This article mainly focused of all the pros and cons, including certain
regulations on the use of such social networking sites which are need to be
developed. It is stated that students should get the choice to spend time socializing
in an effective way and not hinder their performance in school. Additionally, it should
be kept in mind that virtual worlds which differ drastically from reality are created by
social networking sites. The cognitive and intuitive ability to analyze how much time
users want to spend on social media were developed by students and were left to
decide what really matters in each lives determining how much of this virtual life is
translated into real life.
