Conductivity lab

Dependant Variable: Conductivity of compound

Independent Variable: The compound

Controlled Variables: The Voltage performed on the 100 ml of water,
Using same amount of solute.

Apparatus:
- Beaker
- Spatula
- 2 wires
- 100ml measuring cylinder
- Mass balance
- Lamp
- Ammeter
- 2 electrodes

   Method:
1. Measure 5 g of compound into beaker
2. Add 100ml of water and stir, then record if the compound is soluble
3. Attach your 2 wires to a light bulb and 2 electrodes
4. Lower the electrodes into the solution, see if the lightbulb lights
5. Replace the light bulb with an ammeter, test if the current is through
the solution
6. Record results
7. Repeat for other compound

Key pieces includes the two wires, so they can transfer the electricity
through the water to the light bulb. Water, because it is much easier to
transfer from water to a source rather than a raw substance.
Identifying risks:

Risks are a major part of labs, in our lab there multiple risks including,
splashing of the eye with chemical compounds/mixture. This can cause
irritation and infection of the eye, to prevent this we used saftey transparent
glasses to be able to work. Another risk includes electrocution, this could
damage your body and if powerful enough kill. We eliminated this risk by
using safe to touch wires and small amount of voltage.

Results:

Compound Formula Soluble? Conductive?

Sodium Chloride NaCI Yes Yes
Copper Sulphate CuS Yes Yes
Cobalt Chloride COCI Yes Yes
Potassium Nitrate KN Yes Yes
Starch (C 6H 10O 5) n No No

We were not able to test if our substances were conductive or not because
we had a problem with our battery, however based on if the compound was
Ionic or Covalent i worked out if it was conductive.
The average is ⅘ Yes for Solubility and ⅘ Yes for conductivity. We observed
that if a compound is Ionic it is soluble and does conduct electricity and
also determined that if a compound is conductive it isn’t soluble and does
not conduct.

Conclusions: Ionic and compounds are charged Ions that gain or lose
electrons. Covalent compound is when two or more atoms share electrons
to form a fill the valency shell. The reason that Ionic compounds can
conduct electricity is because the electrons move around in the atoms and
allow for conductivity however in Covalent bonding electrons are held in the
same place and cannot conduct.

Improvements: Our experiment worked well however we could not

complete the whole experiment, we would of been able to finish this
experiment and take down results if we had a better battery, Improvement
is having a better battery.
