Martensitic Stainless Steel
Rev 0

Specifications:
→ Martensitic Stainless steel are ordered against requirement outlined in ASME/ASTM Standard.
→ Refer ASME SA-240 for Plates, SA-479 for Bars,etc.

Properties
→ SS 410 is basic grade among martensitic stainless steel (0.15C-12.5Cr-0.75 Ni). SS 410 is commonly used
stainless steel grades in general engineering application wherein higher mechanical strength than austenitic
grades is required.

Corrosion resistance of SS 410 is much lower than those of 300 series of austenitic stainless steel grades.
→ All Martensitic grades are heat treatable and they are commonly used in H&T condition.
→ All martensitic grades are magnetic at room temperature.

SS 420 (0.15C-13Cr) have higher mechanical property, but slightly lower corrosion resistance than SS 410.
→ SS 431 (0.2C-16Cr-2Ni) which has higher Cr and Ni content than SS 410 is considered to be best grade with good
strength and corrosion resistance closer to austenitic grade SS 304.
→ Grade 440 which is primarily 0.67C-17Cr-0.75Mo steel provides highest hardness and wear resistance among
all grades of stainless steel.
→ Grade 440 are used in three grade- 440A with 0.6-0.75%C , 440B with 0.75-0.95%C and 440C with 0.95-1.2%C.
Corrosion resistance of 440A is best among three grades, whereas Hardness obtained in 440C is highest (60-66
HRC).
→ All three grades of SS 440 are preferred to be machined in annealed condition.

Martensitic Grades like SS 410,SS 420 and SS 431 are extremely difficult to machine above hardness of 35 HRC.

Applications
→ Martensitic grades like SS410, SS420 and SS431 are usable upto 600°C. However use above tempering
temperature is not recommended due to drastic reduction in strength.
→ SS 410 and SS420 are used for shafts, pins, fasteners and other general engineering application where moderate
corrosion resistance along with fairly good strength is acceptable.
→ SS 431 provides corrosion resistance closer to SS 304. Hence it is of commonly used martensitc grade for sea
water application.
→ SS 440A, SS 440B and SS 440C are used in bearings, valve seat wherein high hardness and wear resistance are
required.

Sources
→ Available Locally as well as from Foreign Sources

Dos and Don'ts

→ It is recommended to use martensitic stainless steel in Hardened and Tempered condition for better corrosion
resistance. Components with smooth surface finish are observed to perform better due to reduced chances of
crevice corrosion.
→ Tempering of Martensitic grades like SS 410,SS 420 and SS 431 shall be avoided between temperature range of
425°C-600°C as it leads to reduction in impact properties of material below usable range.
→ Specify requirement of Impact testing in all martensitic grades like SS 410, SS420, SS431 which are being
procured in Hardened and Tempered condition.
