At the end of the session, you are expected to:

1. know what information should be written in the

background of the study;

2. identify the important contents of the background of

the study; and

3. write a sample background of the study using a given

abstract.
1. Can E. coli be written as such in the
research title?
2. Is the title:
“Antimicrobial potential of
Palagtiki (Eleusine marginata Lindl.)”
a correct title?
Sachdev (2018) as cited by Editage Insights (n.d.) described
background of the study as:

• establishes the context of the research

• this section explains why this particular research topic
is important and essential to understanding the main
aspects of the study
• justifies the need for conducting the study
How to structure the background of the study:

• In this section, the author usually outlines concisely

the historical developments in the literature that led to the
current topic of research

• authors should briefly highlight the main developments

of their research topic and identify the main gaps that need
to be addressed
The section should be organized as:
• What aspects of the problem (phenomenon) are known
and what needs further investigation?

• What approaches have been used previously in research

of the problem?

• What is the rationale of the study?

Enago Academy (2019) suggests to pay close attention to the
following questions which can help in writing the background
information of the research study:

• Are there any theory, concept, term, and idea that may
be unfamiliar to the target audience and will require
you to provide any additional explanation?

• Any historical data that need to be shared in order to

provide context on why the current issue emerged?

• Are there any concepts that may have been borrowed

from other disciplines that may be unfamiliar to the
reader and need an explanation?
Generally, the background of the study includes:

1. Discussion of the problem in general and the specific

situations as observed and experienced by the researcher
(macro to micro approach);

2. Concepts and ideas related to the problem including

clarification of important terminologies; and

3. Discussion of the existing or present conditions and what is

aimed to be in the future or the gap to be filled-in by the
research.
Identify the parts of the
background of the study by
answering the questions that
follow each sample background.
Write a possible background of
the study using a given research
title with its abstract.
