Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

Nokia doesn’t need new product.

Does Nokia know how many people were talking about Nokia need new N Series which can
compete with iPhone or Android phone?
If you were trying to find out from Internet community, you will find out that thousands and
thousands of people talk about like that.

But Nokia doesn’t really need any of new product. That is the truth. But why thousands and
thousands of people were claimed that?
Because Nokia did not do something. Something that can change whole story.

This paper will prove that.

Why I wrote this paper?

* This paper is written specifically for the Nokia and Symbian. So don’t send out this paper
to any other, please. Because people do not understand what this paper is all about. And I am
trying to explain missing opportunity or missing secret ingredient. It was not my intention to
argue with geek or mania.

People are too eager to compare things like iPhone versus Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. (Later
on, I will only use Nokia 5800 or 5800 for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.)
Let’s think very carefully.
If I have iPhone, do I really have to care about what was good about 5800?
If I have 5800, do I really need to know whether iPhone was better than my phone?
Do I really need to know?
But why people are arguing every mobile related web page that iPhone was far better than
anything else? Why?

Simply put it this way. Because this geek websites doing that every time. Technically, they
didn’t really raise the question about that. But they did.

Yes, you wouldn’t believe what I was saying. But I can assure you that they did.
Because they never really using the phone in real life. They were playing with them so they
were happy to playing. It was like kid has a toy.

Most of geek’s website loves the iPhone. They love that how fast it is or how responsible it is.
You see, that’s the problem. They never talk about situation that happens in real life.
It was really fast. Yes, I agree. So CPU was very busy and it became very hot so I have to
give iPhone a break and it was too hot to using it in summer.
Do you think that was the end of story?

3
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

No. It can’t be using it very long because battery was already gone. Do I have to carry my
netbook or notebook computer for recharge battery? Are you kidding me?
That’s the reality.
But they never talk about that because they never using it in real life.
Yes, I know they will say anyone can get power everywhere or who wouldn’t have computer.

That is the reason I am contacting with Nokia and Symbian. Not any where else.
There has other reason.

Nokia phone was quite fast and responsive and it was hot but it wasn’t that hot. I can still use
it in summer.
And it can’t be using it very long but it doesn’t have to recharge all the time like iPhone does.

Do you realise what I am trying to say here?

That’s the reason why Nokia has lower power CPU, wasn’t it? But who knows about this?
Nokia didn’t let them know.
That’s why people complain about lower power CPU all the time and saying that Nokia
phone was very slow.

I know Nokia geek website trying to telling that story but they didn’t get the point.

I was once geek who had several kind of PDA last time but not any more. So I know what
geek thinks. Nokia geek probably know benefit of lower power CPU. But not quite.
They were still the geek, weren’t they? So they wanted to have powerful toy. What kind of
geek doesn’t like powerful toy, right?

That’s why they did not talk about real life situation.
I will give you just one example here. And I will talk about more in later.
If I wanted to go 5 or 6 hours of mountain hiking during weekend, do I have to carry 2 or 3

4
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

spare battery for iPhone? Do you think this is not the real life situation?
But 5800 doesn’t really need spare battery.
You don’t need spare battery for iPhone, if you don’t do anything.
But if I wanted to go mountain hiking, I would like turn on GPS for Sportstraker app, taking
the picture, (because I am too lazy to carry the digital camera. Truthfully, I don’t even have a
digital camera. I will tell you more story later.) twitter app, listen to music, note on some idea
and so on.

There has other real situation like I had to do something in the weekend morning so I had to
mountain hiking at late afternoon. That case, I will probably need a lantern. And 5800 have a
lantern so I don’t need to bring lantern. So I don’t even worry about evening hiking.
But iPhone can’t use as lantern. Also iPhone couldn’t use that much apps together (don’t have
multitasking ability or limited multitasking) and need spare battery.

This is the truth.

People can save iPhone battery for not using it. If you don’t use the phone, what kind of
reason for buying that in first place.

I can go on more about how ridiculous it is but I will leave it that. Because I don’t want to
argue with iPhone maniac.

It was different product so it was stupid things to compare. But I did that because I was trying
to prove my point. I am not trying to argue whether iPhone was crab or not.
So what I was realised that Nokia didn’t show to the world that what this phone capable of in
real life situation such as why Nokia choose lower power CPU instead powerful CPU.
So Nokia and Symbian were missing the opportunity that Symbian powered Nokia phone
will benefit to using it in real life situation.

I will explain the first question about customer doesn’t really care about which phone is

5
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

better. Because customer wanted to use it well in their phone not that stupid arguing, don’t
you think?
But every geek’s websites were war on smartphone operating system. That is the reason I am
very confident about what I am proposing here.

If you read further, you will find quite many evidence that how real life story can help with
Symbian powered Nokia phone’s sales. And it will also prove that Nokia doesn’t really need
new product.

6
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

1. Introduction

This is rough version of project proposal and it did not follow any of proposal format. So it
could not easy to read or understand what this proposal was about but if you read further, you
will understand what this is all about.

It was not intended to write in informal way but my English writing skill was not good
enough for formal writing. Could you accept my apology for poor writing, please?

Let me introduce myself. My name is Seong pill kon (nickname or pen name as Ara) who
was writing many things on several blogs for Korean. And most distinguish thing about my
blog is that show to the Korean that reality of what really happen in real world related to
technology, creativity, mobile, open source, etc. So my blog’s posts were quite different
viewpoint than any other blog. And I am also writing about mobile stuff like iPod touch,
Nokia 6210s and 5800. I have done writing about iPod Touch, though.

And I have been learn English for 6 and half years and then I haven't been speak or write
English almost 3 years now because I came back to my hometown in Korea about 3 years
ago. So I believe my writing could be far worse because my English expression was very
limited and quite poor.

My written English was very poor so this paper can’t use it to other purposes. So it should be
all rewrite it and it also need nicer and suitable project title. And I follow up citation like
wikipedia so it probably need better citation.
I couldn’t show it this to anyone so I am doing it all alone. Could you accept my apology for
having too many grammatical errors, misspelling, wrong citation and any other mistakes,
please?

7
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

I am Korean so I know a lot about Korean people. So when I am writing something on my

blog in Korean, it doesn’t take it long. But when I am trying to write this paper, it took me
more than a month to just get started. Because I don’t know much about western people’s life
and how they think.

So could you please read and understand it what I am saying rather than how I poorly write
it?

And if you have any questions regarding this matter, please feel free to contact me.

1.1 What is my intention for writing this?

You can clearly see that my writing wasn't good enough and living in Korea doesn't help me
to find people who can do this project together.
That is the reason why I introduce myself and also why I didn't write it to the blog.

And another most important thing is that not many people could understand what this is all
about. But Nokia made 5800 so some of Nokia's employee should understand what this is all
about.

If you don't understand what this paper is all about, please pass to who really make decision
for making Nokia 5800 or who responsible for making it or marketing and public relation
department especially related to the internet community and geek websites. Or who could
really understand this matter.

8
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

This proposal's intention:

• to looking for someone who totally agree on this matter so we can do blogging or
similar kind of activity together.
• If Nokia and Symbian quite agree on this matter, we could do campaign together.
• If Nokia and Symbian totally agree on this matter, we could do ad campaign together.
• Or many other possibilities.

1.2 Why write this matter to the Nokia?

Why not any other place like blog, magazine or any kind.
Because this is all about Nokia phone especially about Nokia 5800. I thought about this
matter for contacting with some of famous Nokia gadget blog. But they were the geek.
I believe their viewpoint of Nokia phone and my viewpoint of Nokia phone were totally
different.

1.3 Before go further

I should appropriately divide things such as

• Korean market and world market
• developed country and developing country
• geek world, geek’s websites, their follower, iPhone mania, etc
• ordinary people in Korea and ordinary people in New York
but I couldn’t do that.

Because I am the only one doing this matter so I didn’t have enough time to analyse it all.

9
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

I believe it was not a big deal because most things are happening in internet so it was still
acceptable.

This proposal will bring up lots of sarcasm when it tries to realistic so it was not my intention
to insult them. I was just trying to be objective and realistic.

So this proposal's intention wasn't

• to praise Nokia
• to argue with geek world (geek was mostly who own the geek websites and their
followers)
• to argue with iPhone mania world
• to argue with Nokia's campaign, Womworld/Nokia, Nseries and all the Nokia’s blog,
Nokia’s website, Nokia’s social network page
• divide world between geek world and real world
• to argue about rich people
I can't ignore what they did so I understand that they have their purpose. So if I was arguing
with them, it was not mean to be they were wrong.

10
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

2. Where does Symbian powered Nokia phone's strength

came from?

Let's be realistic.
Geek playing the phone. And they were not using it in real life.
For example, who really need in real life for Nokia N97 mini's extreme macro videography or
photography?1
Yes, it was good thing to have. (I know some people would like to have.) And it was better
than nothing. But come on. Who really need it in real life?

I know geek will claim that they were using it in real life.
But the truth is they don't have time for using it in real life because they have to play other
mobile phone at the very next day.
And they don't have to pay for the phone (I don't know much about other country but Korea
does.) so they never talk about the cost of phone. Are you kidding me? Who want to buy
$800 phone? In reality, people would say $400 phone also expensive.
But they don't even buy the phone so what do they care about cost of phone?
If they did pay the bill, it doesn't matter because they will earn more from blog
advertisement's income or other way like consulting or something.

So what they do with their phone, in reality?

They have many phones in their hand so what they can do with it? Of course, they will play
with them. So they will use it in playing manner not in real world.

Many people in Korea are complaining about Nokia 5800. And people claim that it was
rubbish phone and Nokia X6 also rubbish phone.
But at the end, they were still using it.
1 Fakhre, “Extreme Macro Videography and Photography with Nokia N97 Mini,” June 16, 2010,
http://www.symbiantweet.com/macro-photography-with-nokia-n97mini.

11
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

Why?

So many people were complained about Symbian powered Nokia phone but why they were
still using it? Why?

Symbian powered Nokia smartphone was nothing special. So many people claim that it can’t
be compare with iPhone or Android phone.
But how nothing special phone can sell around 44.3%2 of smartphone market. How nothing
special phone that can sell that much? Does this make sense to you?

That’s where the truth comes out.

If you didn’t use Nokia 5800 phone for long period time, you probably couldn’t understand.
So I will explain detail of Nokia 5800’s strength later.
This phone wasn’t special at all. But it was perfectly suitable for ordinary people in their
daily life.
I should not say like this but rich people and probably include Nokia’s employee will not
easily understand what I am saying here. Because rich people do not experience that kind of
situation in their daily life. If you read further, you will know what reason for saying this.
In that case, you will probably difficult to understand why Nokia 5800 or Nokia phone was
best phone in real world.

2.1 What do I mean by real world?

12
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

2.1.1 Cost of phone

If you are going to buy something such as car, television, etc, what is most important matter
for buying it? What is it really?
Budget, isn’t it?
So budget was most important matter. But, how come geek world never talk about that
matter? Did geek come from real world? Seriously.
I know there has too many reason. One good example was most of geek came from United
States and they mostly have monthly plan so they were difficult to talk about the cost.

2.1.2 iPhone was super better than Nokia 5800

Geek’s websites didn’t really compare them but their followers did that all the time. You will
see it from every web page’s comment.
Especially, iPhone mania was all over the geek’s websites.

Who would compare totally different price tag, in reality?

During my Nokia 5800 related presentation3 in Korea, I did ask the people that who would
compare BMW car versus Daewoo Tico4. Daewoo Tico was the one of cheapest and famous
car in Korea and in Korea, imported car like BMW was quite (or very) expensive.

iPhone was around $700 or $800+567 phone. (‘+’ mean was more because unlocked iPhone
was only exist in a few countries. So if customer wanted to buy from them, they have to

sacrifice their warranty or customers have to send back to origin country for fix the issue.)
Nokia 5800 was around $2508 phone and I am not sure whether it include comes with music
or not. Comes with music was important matter because Nokia 5800 was selling in Korea for
less than $150 which was not include comes with music.

How geek or their followers so confidently compare $800+ phone with $150 phone? Does
this make sense to you?

I know there has a reason because I mentioned earlier that United States did sell the phone
with monthly plan so they couldn’t recognized real price of the phone.

2.1.3 There has too many iPhone maniac in geek’s websites.

This is the problem. There has significantly different phone cost but they will say iPhone was
cheaper like Nokia 5800 because of monthly plan. That is the big problem in reality. And
geek never really talks about the phone cost so people were totally forgotten about the phone
cost.
There has other reason like they were the iPhone maniac. That’s why they can’t think
properly.

Nokia and Symbian should fight with iPhone maniac. But the problem is Nokia or Symbian
can’t argue with these people because Nokia and Symbian are company and iPhone maniacs
were just bunch of people.

And also they were not right mind so how can you explain to them, right?
So Nokia should just talk with right minded people that what Symbian powered Nokia phone
capable of in real life situation and show it to the world what benefit for using it in real life.

8 Google Shopping, “nokia 5800 unlocked - Google Product Search,” n.d., http://www.google.com/products?
q=nokia+5800+unlocked&hl=en&aq=f.

14
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

It was quite effective strategic because I believe, I have done that. I will talk about it later.

2.2 Strength of Symbian powered Nokia phone

Here, you see.

What is Nokia and Symbian’s strength?
Let me ask you other way. Which one is the most Symbian powered Nokia’s best selling
product recently?
Yes, it was Nokia 58009. (Maybe, there has more.) So what was the strength of Nokia 5800?
Yes, it was cheap and mass production product, wasn’t it?

Almost anyone can afford to buy it. Not only that.

Someone who can’t afford to buy expensive phone like iPhone and Nexus One. (This led me
to other story which can analyse people why there has too many iPhone maniac and Nokia
phone haters in this world. But just leave it that for now.)
I know it was quite big generalization because there has too many countries and each country
was very different than others. But it was still acceptable. Because that’s why Nokia and
Symbian have 30% to 40% of smartphone market share.

I know that Nokia N and E series’s sales were not bad. And Nokia N and E series were not
very expensive than iPhone and Nexus one so it will apply same thing like 5800. I can’t tell
the detail about it because I didn’t have any experience about N or E series.

Nokia and Symbian’s strength was product for ordinary people, right? Not only that. Because
Nokia phone was for real life situation.
But what did Nokia and Symbian do? Nokia and Symbian asked about their product to not
ordinary people.

9 “Nokia 5800 XpressMusic - Wikipedia,” n.d., http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5800.

15
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

So Nokia and Symbian should ask to ordinary people who own the Symbian powered Nokia
phone’s strength product like Nokia 5800. I mean Nokia and Symbian should ask to ordinary
people who use Symbian powered Nokia phone wisely and also use it in real life situation.
But Nokia and Symbian always ask about their product to geek.
I could say that Nokia and Symbian asked very wrong person about their product.

Do you think geek really care about cheap phone’s ability? They have more expensive phone
in their hand so what do they care about cheap phone.

I’m not saying Nokia and Symbian did it wrong. I’m saying that Nokia and Symbian totally
missing this big opportunity or this very secret ingredient.

Maybe, some people already did things like what I did. But it doesn’t matter. Because most of
Nokia related geek websites (also Nokia’s all the blog and twitter account, too) never talk
about ordinary people’s real life situation.

2.3 Ordinary people’s real life (How I use my phone in real life)

When I was in Malaysia, I have been used Nokia 3310, 2100 and 6280. I haven’t been used
Nokia 6280 for long. And last year, I bought a Nokia 6210s which is same model name as
6210 navigator. After that, I bought a Nokia 5800 around end of 2009. And I also bought iPod
Touch 1st generation around 2 years ago.
So I don’t know anything about expensive phone like Nokia N95, 9210 Communicator, E72
and N86. It was all guess work about N and E series phone. And iPhone also all guess work
from iPod Touch’s experience.
But Nokia phone was made for ordinary people so I’m confident about what I am saying
here.

16
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

So I believe when I am talking about Nokia 5800’s strength, it could be apply similar things
to the N or E series.

This is my life with Symbian powered Nokia phone.

2.3.1 Nokia 6210s as watch and speedometer

I already wrote about this in my Korean blog: “Nokia 6210s’ screen was good at outdoor and
how could best use of it10. (translate by meaning)
Many phone was not like Nokia 6210s’ screen (especially in Korea because Korea doesn’t
much have Nokia phone) so if they wanted to see the time, they must turn on the screen. So it
wasn’t comfortable to use as watch.
But Nokia 6210s doesn’t need that. And Nokia 6210s doesn’t need to backlight on for watch
so it can save battery power, too. I have recorded youtube video11 for explain about this in
Korean.

It can be used as desktop watch like this:

17
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

photo taken by Nokia 5800

And it can be use as bicycle’s GPS speedometer with program such as sportstracker app,
endmondo app.
Nokia 6210s was really good for that because it can save battery power from backlight off.

So you don’t need wrist watch, desktop watch and GPS speedometer. So how much can you
save money for using Nokia 6210s? Ordinary people can save money from this, right?

* Why Nokia 6210s was better than iPod Touch(probably iPhone, too) in real
life? #1

Steve Litchfield’s article “Sun, sun, sun. And I can't see a thing on my phone!12” at June 24,
2009 which compare Nokia’s some of model and other phone about sunlight performance.
I am not saying this is false. I am saying was it really real life comparison?
I have iPod Touch and I can’t see a thing in sunlight when I was outside. But I can see a thing
in my Nokia 6210s.
But Steve Litchfield said that iPod Touch’s sunlight performance was as good as N95 and
E6113.

12 Steve Litchfield, “Sun, sun, sun. And I can't see a thing on my phone!,” June 24, 2009,

13 Ibid.

18
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

I could be wrong but someone wrote that Nokia 6210s’ screen was quite same as N95.

Why I couldn’t see a thing in my iPod Touch?

What makes this difference? Because I have to save battery power for iPod Touch so I had to
decrease the screen brightness. And Nokia 6210s doesn’t need that much. I mean it doesn’t
much different with screen brightness in sunlight.
Yes, I can give full screen brightness to iPod Touch but if I do, I can do nothing because of
battery power.

You see, it makes totally different story.

I know if users were very and very carefully adjust screen brightness, it wasn’t that big
difference. But who really want to that much big effort to save battery power. Also it was too
much wasting time for take care of that.

2.3.2 Nokia 6210s as mountain hiking, bicycle and sports logging record
system

I wrote about this14 in my Korean blog.

Most of Korean didn’t understand English so I did explain what it can do such as recorded
what music I listened, about GPS function, display my movement on the map(not many
Korean website showing this kind of thing at the time), spotted photo’s location and about
workout details like distance, duration, average speed, etc.

If you have Nokia 6210s or 5800, you don’t need GPS and GPS record machine. So ordinary
people like me can save money for buying expensive GPS machine, right?

14 Seong pill kon (Ara), “운동, 등산, 자출 등의 필수품, 노키아 6210s,” September 11, 2009,

19
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

People would say iPhone can do that, too. But could I give real life story again for inability to
do multitasking? I already talked about this very beginning.

2.3.3 Nokia 6210s as digital camera

Yes, it can apply to any of Nokia phone because most of Nokia phone has good camera.

I have read about Nokia’s phone camera from websites (search from the google so couldn’t
remember) that it was quite good. And I have seen some of photo from Korean’s Nokia user
community site which is similar like forum.
Nokia user community15(I will use acronym as NUC later on.) in naver.com which is kind of
close community so it doesn’t allow to see all the article before subscribe that site except
post’s writer must select ‘anyone can see’ option.

I have very old 2 megapixels digital camera and sometimes it did not work properly. So when
I bought Nokia 6210s, I was surprised that I can use as my digital camera.
So I have written about that16 and explain that it was quite good and included untouched
photos so I can use it as digital camera. And I also introduced that there has flickr group
which can see some of sample photo.
• flicker’s ‘Nokia user in Korea’ group http://www.flickr.com/groups/1211850@N23/
• flicker’s ‘Nokia’ group http://www.flickr.com/groups/37906643@N00/

Also I have wrote “Nokia 6210s, night shot wasn’t that bad17” (translate by meaning) for low
light performance. And it wasn’t bad considering the phone cost.

And this is the one of most disturbing situation for me. Because that NUC’s member

continuously complain about photo quality of Nokia 6210s and 5800 so I had to write about it
again and again and again.

When I write something in NUC, I mostly choose ‘anyone can see’ option but not all of them.
And I had to write to my blog, too. I can’t explain everything what I wrote so I will just give
some of example only.

2.3.4 Nokia 6210s as reviewer’s digital camera and real time reporting

This is one of important story because it was real life story.

I have been to downtown in my hometown, Daegu, Korea and then when I have been to
library which is very close to downtown, there has exhibition for celebration of library’s 90th
opening. I didn’t know there has exhibition so I didn’t carry the digital camera. (Yes,
technically, I don’t have one.)
I didn’t carry the digital camera but I can take photo from 6210s so I have write18 about in my
blog with several photos from exhibition.
And I also try to make real time report through website like pixelpipe.com which will send
out message or photo to several social network websites such as twitter.com or facebook.com.

2.3.5 Nokia 6210s as image scanner

I have got small gift from Google Korea so I did write19 about it. And there has small booklet
so I took the photo from whole book. And then I realised that I can read every word from

photo.

There has other real life story. When I put this story to the NUC, one of member said story
like this. He said that when he had to away from university during weekend, he took the
photo from his course book. So he can read course book from anywhere and anytime.

That photo was all taken from Nokia 6210s. Can you believe it?
It was quite old and cheap phone. But it can do that much.
I am just getting start. And I have so many stories to tell you.

2.3.6 Nokia 6210s, use it for making event invitation letter with guide map

This isn’t great photo but I would like to tell the story about protect nature from talk about
wild duck family to the Korean. Korean should keep cleaning river and don’t throw rubbish
and so on. So we can protect wild duck family. And I also have write20 about use GPS for
taken photo with location.

I have also written21 about it in English but I didn’t talk about nature thing here so it wasn’t
that interesting to read, I think. It was completely different story than what I wrote in Korean.

This isn’t good photo. But Nokia 6210s with sportstracker websites can make event invitation
with guide map. And if there has event poster or something, Nokia 6210s can take photo of it.
So it can make great event invitation letter22 so easily.

I am not sure about the developed country but it was very important matter in Korea because
Korea’s address system was quite messy and most people can’t find location with address
only. So it was absolutely necessary item in invitation letter.

That is the reason Korea was quite famous for car navigation system. And most of Nokia user
in Korea asked about when does Ovi Maps service open in Korea.

* About Korean market #1

Nokia 6210s was not selling a lot in Korea but it wasn’t bad. And I heard that many of Nokia
6210s was exported to other country so I am not so sure about that.
But it doesn’t really matter because smartphone market in Korea was really small at the time.
So Korean’s smartphone market was just started with Nokia 5800 and iPhone 3GS.

I am not sure how much do you know about Korean market but Korean market’s one of
biggest problem is that call the media brainwash which is all kind of lies came from there. So
nobody knows truth about market. For example, Nokia 6210s sales weren’t bad consider the
smartphone market but many media said that it was horrible and Nokia will leave Korea
again like last time.
This is important matter to Korean because they don’t just buy the phone until many people
going to buy that phone and they will also listen media very carefully whether people are
going to buy or not. Maybe you will say too much generalization but I have so many
evidences for that matter.

So people crying like baby that sales of Nokia 6210s were horrible and Nokia will give up
Korean market like last time. So I did explain it wasn’t that bad sales consider the Korean’s
smartphone market.

23
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

Nokia 5800 made through Korean’s certificate for electric wave or something and this means
is that Nokia will continue to do business in Korea. But people claim that Nokia will leave
again. So I had to write23 about it. And I also have written about it in NUC, too.
And it was quite important matter for Korean Nokia user.

So this is the reason why I have written about world’s mobile phone and smartphone market
share almost every year.
Because Korean media always saying that Nokia’s market share was totally losing and
Samsung already have taken all of Nokia’s market share and then people also saying same
thing. So people were saying that Samsung already dominated 70% of mobile phone and
smartphone market share.

Here is what I wrote:

• a little bit about mobile phone market share24
• 2004 to 2008 smartphone market share25
• 2008 mobile phone market share26
• 2008 smartphone market share27

2.3.7 Nokia 5800 as digital camera

I have written many things about Nokia 6210s’ camera but people did not believe what I am
saying. So I have to write again about this matter.

I have write “Nokia 5800 XpressMusc untouched photos28” and also to the NUC29.

I already explained NUC was close forum so nobody can see NUC member’s photo. NUC’s
member uploaded many good photos there but nobody can see it.
So many Koreans do not know about Nokia phone’s camera capability.

There has call the SLR club30 in Korea which is very famous for gadget stuff and digital SLR
camera, too. One day, they were talked about 5800 and then it became extremely famous so
5800’s sales also increased a lots.
But funny thing is that they have so many members that know about DSLR camera but they
do not know anything about 5800’s camera capability. That’s why they only talk about 5800
as mp3 player.

And NUC was not open to anyone so who knows about 5800’s camera capability in Korea.

That is the reason why I was talking a lot about it. I did make good impression about Nokia
phone to the Koreans but Nokia Corporation doesn’t know anything about me.
I know Nokia did enter the Korean smartphone market at the very right time. And Nokia’s
advertisement was very different than any other Korean’s advertisement and not only that. I
know that Nokia’s bus station ad, introduce the 5800 with singer Yojo, Karaoke party, street
ad, TV music show’s small Nokia X6 ad, Nokia X6 ad bus, sponsor of 2010 Time to rock
festival with Nokia and Nokia X6 launch party for Nokia X6 Music week31.

I have also written about it3233 with Nokia X6’s delay launch news.

I know that Nokia’s ad was very effective and Nokia will connect with real life people. But
there has gap between real life people and geek people. Because real life people also
connected with geek people and they also heard about iPhone and Android.

So I believe I was the one of them in Korea that fills up that gap.

Maybe this expression wasn’t that clear because I haven’t written all the evidence here yet.
So if you read further, I am sure that you will understand what I mean.

2.3.8 Nokia 5800 has powerful portability than digital camera or DSLR.

When you saw the great scenery but you don’t have DSLR in your hand.
Was that situation really helpful?

I have seen the photo from WOMWorld/Nokia’s article “Nokia’s Facebook fan photos34”.
And all photos are great but I noticed especially last one which is Ronnie Bernardo took with
Nokia N8635.
I am not sure whether it is untouched photo or not. But it was not important.

I will ask you this. One day, you have seen really beautiful scene so you would like to take

photo, right? But how?

You don’t have your beloved digital camera or DSLR camera in your hand. So what’s the
point for having digital camera, if you can’t catch the great moment?

So who would really carry digital camera or DSLR camera all the time?

I hope you did get my point. You see, that is the reason Ronnie Bernardo’s photo was really
important. Because who could think of launch the rocket made that much great scenery,
right?

I believe this very thing make totally differentiate Nokia phone to any other phone. But Nokia
didn’t talk about this. I don’t think Nokia will believe what I am saying here but don’t worry.
More evidences will follow up.

So I have written36 that Nokia phone camera was easy carry than digital camera and DSLR
camera so it was really useful in real life and also include my blog’s previous posts which is
relate to the phone’s photo quality.
And I believe this thing quite help the 5800’s user because people noticed about 5800’s
camera. Because I have read from NUC’s posts that some people wanted to buy Nokia 5800
or X6 for photo diary.

When I was wrote “Nokia 5800 XpressMusc untouched photos” to the NUC, visit count was
around 2,100. But when I was written about portability post, visit count was around 4,700.
I know I put that article different category but you will see that people are quite interested
about it. Because both of the visit count was quite higher than other article.

* About Korean market #2

If you still don’t believe about Korean’s conservative mind from media brainwash, I will
show you one of very good example.
When I wrote about portability post, I have got response through blog’s trackback.
beForedArk blog37 claimed that worse phone camera than what I wrote about it so I have
been read about it. But first photo clearly explain how utterly beForedArk blog was wrong
because LH8000 photo’s leaves wasn’t green at all and 5800 photo’s leaves clearly show as
green so what can I say more?
He said that both were wrong in white-balance so it doesn’t matter to compare and then he
just compare original size of photo and LH8000 can take super greater photo than 5800. And
he didn’t even take the photo properly but he compared it, anyway.

An ordinary person wasn’t all photographers so I understand that. But problem is he claims
that he knows a lot about photography and he also write a lot about photography in his blog.

Because Nokia wasn’t famous in Korea at all so most of Koreans believe that Nokia phone
was really crab. That’s why they can’t even see the color of photo.

2.3.9 About ‘life in Daegu’ posterous

Around May 1st 2010, I have started to write ‘life in Daegu’ to the posterous38 with taken
photo from 5800. So this story is all came from real life and taken photo by 5800 and
sometimes I also uploaded photo via online share function.
I know it wasn’t that interesting story there and it wasn’t really great photo. But there has life.

37 beForedArk, “노키아 익스프레스뮤직 5800 의 카메라 성능이 좋다는 얘기가 많아서,,” May 26, 2010,

38 Seong pill kon (Ara), “Daegu's posterous - Home,” n.d., http://daegu.posterous.com/.

28
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

That’s what makes totally different than others.

I have plan for the team blog so it could have more story about life in Daegu. But I couldn’t
find people to do together so it was still just me.

I have more things to write on all my blogs but now I am busy writing this paper so
temporary story was stopped. So don’t just assume that I have nothing more to show it in my
blog.
Actually there has more important reason. I do not want to reveal any more ideas about
Symbian powered Nokia phone in real life situation to the Koreans. Because there has a few
Koreans already doing like what I did which they’ve got idea from my blog. So I would like
to tell Nokia about this matter.

You see, I couldn’t do this writing about ‘life in Daegu’ without 5800 or 6210s. That’s why
5800 was perfectly suitable with ordinary people’s real life.

2.3.10 Technology was nothing unless…. #1 about Carl Zeiss

I heard and saw advertisement a lot about Carl Zeiss, when I was in Malaysia. But I have no
idea what it is. I know there has something to do with camera lens but how do I know what
that Carl Zeiss mean?

What is difference between technology product name and jargon?

If someone asked me that scallops or orzo pasta, I have no idea what it is. Because I don’t
know anything about cook and I am from Asian country where most people eat rice.
And if I ask you that scallop, do you have any idea what kind of scallops I am talking about?

I have to look up about scallops and then I found out that most are same but it is slightly

29
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

different.
Let’s get the point.

* I have attached original photo in mail so you can see the original photo from there.
I didn’t know what this Carl Zeiss is until I’ve taken photo like below.

photo taken by 6210s

It still didn’t reveal Carl Zeiss lens’ capability. But it was quite impressive close-up shot.

I have uploaded below photo39 to the facebook.com’s Nokia fan page. And many Nokia fans
liked below the photo which is taken by 5800.

I also couldn’t believe I took that photo.

Now I can clearly see what this Carl Zeiss mean.

But not quite yet.

I am not a photographer so I could be wrong. But this amazing color was the one that Carl

Zeiss’ most distinguish thing, I believe.

That light pink (I am very bad at name the color so it could be wrong name.) was the one that
I saw on the tree at the time.

You see, most of people did not know what this Carl Zeiss is. I have taken the more than
1,000 photos and then I did learn what this Carl Zeiss is.

That is the reason why real life story was really important. And Nokia should not use this
technical term. I mean if Nokia uses it, Nokia should have to clearly show it to the people
what that technical term means.

* Geek was the geek.

I have read a few of geek’s websites that Nokia 5800’s phone camera was very bad.
But what did you see before? So that statement was utterly wrong.

I have read about it very long time ago so I couldn’t include (include one example only)
websites where people said about it. But I am sure that I have read quite many of them like
that.

And then they claim that Nokia 5800 photo was worse than Nokia N95, N82.
Can’t you believe that?

Nokia N95 was almost $50040 phone and Nokia N82 was unsubsidized sales price of
approximately 450 euros41.
And Nokia 5800 was start selling at around $35042 but now phone cost was cut down so now

32
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

it was around $25043.

I didn’t much know about Nokia’s phone cost but many Nokia user and I know that N series
was Nokia’s high-end mobile phone.
So how could they compare high-end phone versus mass production product?

Believe me. They did it all the time. That’s why they always talk about iPhone versus Nokia
N series. I already talked about it very beginning.
I don’t know there has more expensive N series than N900 but it is enough for prove my
point.
iPhone was almost $800444546 phone and Nokia N900 was less than $65047 phone.

You see, there has different price there but geek was always trying to compare it whatever
they pleases.

Let’s get back to the story.

I am using my 5800 as digital camera and it wasn’t that bad. No, it was super awesome phone
camera consider the phone cost. Because I have bought 5800 around $200.

I couldn’t include websites address about 5800’s camera versus N95 or N82.
But I have one that read it recently so I could include here.
tnkgrl blog said that 5800 and E71 was good devices with disappointing cameras and then in
a way that compare them with X6 and E72 and saying that X6 and E72 has nice camera48.

33
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

I have pointed out this because there has price and release date differences. 5800 was around
$100 cheaper49 than Nokia X6. So 5800 wasn’t good at camera because it was mass
production product so it has to be cheap.
And 5800 was released November 200850 and Nokia X6 was released December 200951 so
5800 was 1 year older than Nokia X6.
This is important because technology will improve day by day.

Maybe I was too criticizing it but geek world should have more careful about comparison.
But they just do it anything for their convenience.
That’s why I couldn’t stop criticize them.

You probably think that I was too much criticizing about tnkgrl’s comment. Here is the
reason.

I have got this tweet message from @Nokia

@dai_vernon tweeted: “The @nokia fan album on facebook is stunning. It blows my
mind that someone could take a pic like this http://bit.ly/aORAo9 with a cellphone”
6:44 PM Jul 13th via web Retweeted by nokia and 15 others
(I am sorry for the quite wrong citation but it was tweet so I just included all the links there.)

You see, not many people know what Carl Zeiss mean. So when I have bought Nokia 6210s,
I was blowing my mind like @dai_vernon. It was just 6210s or 5800 which was not
interested to the geek.
Can’t you see how different viewpoint they have? There has huge gap between geek and

ordinary people.

So if ordinary people read tnkgrl’s article, what ordinary people would think about 5800 and
E71’s camera?
It was totally awesome camera but ordinary people think that it was crab because geek says
so.

It goes utterly bad impression to the ordinary people.

I have read about bad quality of 5800’s camera from geek’s website so I thought it was quite
bad. But when I have taken photo with 6210s, I realised that how utterly false idea that was.
That is the reason why I was very criticized about it.

This is the reason why I was saying that rich people would not understand. Because they
were rich so they were playing most of their time with very expensive phone like N95, N86,
N82, N97 and N900.
Rich people and geek were seeing very and very good photo from there expensive phone. So
how do they know about the cheaper phone’s photo quality?
I will talk more about this in PART II.

And I just remember that I have read article about 5800 versus DSLR camera in NUC and
surprisingly (Actually, I wasn’t that surprised because I know that Carl Zeiss’ color and close
up shot was really good.) some of close up shot was quite comparable (in small size picture,
of course) with DSLR and it wasn’t bad.

Oh, here. One more example shot. Many Koreans said that horrible at low light performance
on 5800. But it wasn’t that bad.

35
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

Also there have more low light shots52 in my post.

I know there has many noises. But come on. Do you expect $200 phone could far better than
digital camera? Are you serious?

2.3.11 Technology was nothing unless…. #2 about Xenon Flash

I have read many things related to the Nokia N8. And it was really good. And many Koreans
also really excited about it. And I was, too.
Anyway, I already talked about Carl Zeiss so you will guess what I am going to say here.

Xenon Flash. What is that?

Maybe, I wasn’t native English so I didn’t realise what that flash means. Because I thought
that “flash” was technical term or something.
But how do I know difference between Dual Flash and Xenon Flash?

52 Seong pill kon (Ara), “노키아 5800 XpressMusic 무보정 사진들.”

I know that 5800’s dual flash can’t fire flash like that. So if someone doesn’t know about dual
flash, how do they know difference?

I believe that is the reason why people talk many wrong things on that matter. I haven’t read a
lot about it so it could be small matter.

Now it was already too much to talk about phone camera. So I will leave it that for now.
And it will connect to the other story later and to the PART III. So could you please keep it
mind about this matter, please?

Before go further, one more thing I would like to talk about it.
This technology term should transform to the real life so it will easily understood that what
this technology term was all about. So people can use it wisely. “Use it wisely” that’s the
term that will connect with “Real Life Action with Nokia”.

Because technology didn’t change the world, human did. Human cleverly use the tool and all
this make it happen. But geek and their followers confused about technology. Because they
think that technology is everything so they were just talk about technology, technology and
technology.
Yes, that’s why they were the geek and maniac.

I will talk more detail about this matter in PART III.

2.3.12 About Nokia housing

Many Koreans complained that it was made too plasticky and many gaps where connect to
the front part and back part or something like. And they said that it was horrible.
Some Koreans said that foreign websites also complained about that.

And then they said that it was very bad of Nokia that selling the unfinished product to people.
And they were comparing with iPhone.
So I have to bring up again about phone cost.

But I don’t really notice about those small gaps there. So I don’t mind.
But I believe there has reason for all this, right?
I remembered that mobile phone shops in Malaysia selling many of Nokia and other mobile
phone’s accessories like housing, case, battery, etc.
I have seen many things like that in Malaysia but I didn’t really noticed what this make
special.

This is my Nokia 5800.

38

photo taken by Nokia 6210s

When I went to NUC meet up in Seoul, NUC’s administrators bring the lots of gift and that is
one of them.
It looked totally different than my Nokia 5800. This is the one of reason, right?
Personalise the phone.

photo taken by Nokia 5800

39
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

If I wasn’t wrong, there has other reason. That housing part was like battery. You have to use
it and then throw away, if you use it long. It was like consumable parts.
Some people were easily dropped or throw phone and then phone got many scratches or
damages. And that case, customer can replace the housing.

I have seen so many phone housing, when I was in Malaysia. But I never noticed that it can
personalise phone because I don’t really care about housing.
I have been use Nokia phone for around 5 to 7 years but I didn’t know what that is for.
So how can you expect everybody knows about this?

Koreans and Americans certainly don’t know anything about this, right?
Many of geek websites came from United States, if I am not mistaken. So how can you
expect they will say good thing about Nokia’s product? Which they do know nothing about.

2.3.13 Use as voice recorder

When I gave to small speech for kind of consultation, I also have to give same speech to
other person so I recorded it by Nokia 6210s. I gave speech at the coffee shop where also has
small room. And then I was surprised that recorded quality was really good and my friend
also quite surprised how good that was.

This recorded file was mp4 file so I don’t think I can easily cut some of part and this recorded
one was my consultation work so I can’t include here.
And I think Nokia knew about recorded audio quality.

One day, when I was in my apartment, I heard bird singing very nosily so I recorded it by

40
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

Nokia 6210s. And when I played it again, I was so surprised that it recorded so well.
I have attached this file and I won’t suggest listening from computer because it was better
play it from Nokia 6210s.

So I knew about the recorded audio quality in Nokia 6210s. I can guess how 5800’s recorded
audio quality is like.

One of guy in NUC did interesting thing. Taeul who is indie singer-songwriter, recorded real
life sounds like closing the door sound, the trash bin sound, chopsticks sound, brush teeth
sound with 5800 and then he made hip-hop beat55 from that. And he also demonstrates how
he can play with it.

Why I have suggested to playing recorded sound from Nokia 6210s? Because Nokia 6210s’
speaker was really good and there has something about Nokia phone speaker. But I am not
quite sure what it is.
Anyway, I will talk about Nokia 6210s and 5800’s loud speaker in PART II.

2.4 How much money can I save for using Symbian powered by
Nokia phone?

I don’t need wristwatch, desktop watch, speedometer, GPS, GPS (sports) logging record
system, image scanner, digital camera and voice recorder if I have a Nokia 6210s.
Nokia 5800 can’t use as wristwatch or desktop watch like Nokia 6210s but it has quite better
camera, bigger screen, wifi support, etc.

41
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

This is just half of real life story but I have bought Nokia 5800 for around 200 dollars but I
have already save around 200 to 400 dollars from no need to buy digital camera, voice
recorder, GPS logging record system and GPS machine.
How should I not happy about it?

42
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

3. More about real life story go to the PART II

I have been read about Nokia N8 and I am worrying about same thing happen to the N8 like
other Nokia phone.
Symbian powered Nokia phone’s strength came from real life situation but Nokia and
Symbian always trying to ask geek who really doesn’t care about real life situation.

This is the reason I felt that I don’t have much time because Nokia N8’s launch date was very
close.
So I will talk about more real life story in PART II.

PART II will have Nokia 5800 as mp3 player, lantern, very good sports companion, portable
speaker, voice recorder, and more things about battery, simple presentation machine like
notebook computer, external GPS machine and about firmware. And also I will prove that
5800 was far useful than iPhone in ordinary people’s real life.
I will also explain about relationship with weight, thickness, gripping and holding one hand.
(This one is one of most important part of Symbian powered Nokia phone but I have to talk
about in PART II.)
So PART II will have more example of real life story.

3.1 This isn’t a fiction.

If there has something wrong or unlike about the Symbian powered Nokia phone, there has
all reason for that.
And it was not just reason, it was very and very good reason.

43
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

That’s why 5800 was one of best selling product, right?

Do you remember? I have already proof of reason for lower power CPU at the very
beginning. And 5800 looked like unfinished product but it will cut the cost and customer can
have more personalise phone. And many other things.
And there has many other stories like this but I will talk about it in PART II.

This real life story was not making up story. Because I have been use it that way. And some
of idea came from other Korean who have written about his or her experience in NUC.
So I have learnt from them and I also started to use it that way.

It was not a fiction at all.

3.2 Evidences from my activities in Korea

This isn't about me.

I have written many things about Symbian powered Nokia phone in my blog and NUC, too.
And I am not trying to take any advantage for saying this. I am just trying to give evidence
for my blog that Symbian powered Nokia phone need ordinary people’s real life story.

That is the reason there has many citation with Korean which is mostly written by me. And I
have written about it in twitter, too. Here is my twitter account link:
http://twitter.com/thinklogically
And I have been doing presentations related to the Nokia 5800 several times in several cities
like Daegu, Seoul, Busan when there has meet up in NUC.

44
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

One of presentation was “Social network websites and smartphone”. And I did introduce
about the social network and then explain that how can use it with Nokia 5800.
There has other one “Nokia 5800 was best phone if you consider the cost.” (translate by
meaning) This idea was quite similar like this paper.

This is important presentation because many of NUC’s members have always complained
about 5800’s slowness, ugliness, too plasticky, easily broke, etc. So I believe this presentation
helped many people (who could get very bad impression from them) that 5800 was very
useful than what they thought.

And this is all Korean.

So if you wanted to know what I wrote, you should better ask to me because there has too
many poor translators in Korea so you will get very wrong idea from very bad translation.

Let’s get the point.

Quite beginning part, I have talked about Korean market and I have evidence for helping
Nokia phone sales in Korea. Now I believe that Nokia 5800 and X6’s sales in Korea was
quite good.
So I am the one that help the sales of Nokia 5800 and X6. Because I never talked about
feature or function or specification of phone and then I am just talking about when can I use
it, where can I use it or which situation use it is wisest choice.
So I am just showing it to the Korean that what I did it with my Nokia 5800.

And then I believe it helped.

But Nokia did not know about me at all. I know there has a language barrier and Korean
society was quite closed so Nokia could not easily find out but if Nokia wants to do better,
Nokia should have to find out, right?

45
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

So I believe this is the evidence that Symbian powered Nokia phone need real life story not
that geek’s fancy world story.

I already told that this isn’t about me. So I am just trying to prove my point.
If you have read Malcolm Gladwell’s book “The Tipping point”, you will know the term call
the connector56. Which isn’t exactly telling my position but I believe it was quite similar.
I don’t have many (In Korea, it wasn’t that small, though.) blog’s reader or twitter’s follower
but important thing is that they will listen what I am saying because they know that I gave
very good advice or useful tips so they will trust me.
Some of them told me that they bought 5800 because of me.

Maybe these evidences weren’t enough for Nokia Corporation but if Nokia thinks about very
carefully, I believe it can change everything.

56 “Connector (social) - Wikipedia,” n.d., http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connector_(social).

46
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

4. Are we living on different world?

You see, geek said that iPhone or Android phone was best smartphone in the world, period.
But what you really think about what I wrote here?
Can you see how different that story was? How come this much difference, right?

That’s why I did say geek’s life wasn’t real life story.

Of course, I am not saying world doesn’t need that kind of people. They have their purpose.
So I am not saying that Nokia’s all kind of blog such as N Series blog and WOMWorld/Nokia
blog was not needed.
They have to stay for their purpose.

But you clearly see that Nokia and Symbian also need blog or website that helps to find real
life story for benefit to Nokia and Symbian user.

4.1 Why Nokia doesn’t need new product?

I have introduced about this matter in very beginning. If you understand what I wrote here,
you will probably understand what that means.
I told you that 5800 was perfectly suitable in ordinary people’s daily life so it was perfect
phone. I believe, Nokia already have too many perfect phone especially for the real life
situation so why would you need new product, right?

I believe almost all of Symbian powered Nokia phone also like that. Because I know that
Symbian powered Nokia phone was perfectly suitable in real life situation.

47
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

So Nokia doesn’t really need new product. Instead, Nokia should show it to the people that
how to use it wisely in their real life situation with Symbian powered Nokia phone.
Because Symbian powered Nokia phone’s capability or advantage were all come from real
life.

I know that technology always improve day by day and Nokia N8 looks promising. And I
would like to have Nokia N8. I can’t afford to buy it, though. So I am not saying Nokia
doesn’t really need new product.
I am saying that Nokia should showing to the world that what your phone really capable of.

4.3 Why do so many people think that ordinary people would care
about smartphone war?

Lastly,
I have already talked about it but I will say it again.
It was not my intention for
• compare product versus product
• compare geek world vs real world

After all, customers were interested to know how they can use it well.

Let’s think about it carefully.

Why people think that smartphone users really care about smartphone war between iPhone,
Android and Symbian? Why geeks think that people would care?
That’s exactly what geek’s viewpoint of world. People were just fall for geek’s argument,
weren’t they?

48
Real life action with Nokia by Seong pill kon

So my intention was tell the people that use it wisely in their real life. So I am trying to help
people that what things people can do with Symbian powered Nokia phone. (Can’t you see?
It was quite similar idea of Nokia N8’s ad campaign57.)

I have already told about Nokia’s advertisement. And I already told you that it was very
effective. I am not denying that. But geek’s websites (media) goes to all over the ordinary
people so it will affect them. That’s why ordinary people also talk about smartphone war.

So I have seen the opportunity about this matter.

If you understand perfectly about this paper, you will know how it can connect to the other
story. And I believe there has bigger picture there and also it can help the technology
community to become more realistic. And it will certainly help the sales of Symbian powered
Nokia phone.

* This isn’t end of story. But Nokia N8 will soon release so I am quite sure that Nokia N8
also need real life story like this. So I had to send this first.
So please pass this paper to proper person please.

If you can’t and don’t understand what this is all about, I won’t suggest to read PART III.
You should better read PART II for more evidence about this matter.
