5. PROBLEM SCENARIO

You are working as a Production Engineer in Super Metal Sdn. Bhd. company. The
company plan to set up a new production line. There are several work stations in the
new production line. Your manager assigned you to in-charge one of the work station.
At this work station two pieces of metal with thickness 3 mm need to be welded. The
welding process can be done by human or pneumatic robotic arm. The robotic arm
can be controlled by mechanical relay or Programmable Logic Controller (PLC).The
details process of using robotic arm are shown in Appendix A. The production line
runs 24 hours per day. You have to make comparison in term of pros and cons, cost,
time, maintenance and etc. for each cases :

1) Welding process operated by operator (human)

2) Welding process operated by robotic arm and its controlled by mechanical
relay
3) Welding process operated by robotic arm and its controlled by PLC

Currently the company use mechanical relay to control others pneumatic robotic arm
in existing work station. Therefore, you have to demonstrate to your manager how to
control robotic arm using PLC. The details of the programming and its electrical
circuit to control the pneumatic robotic arm should be developed. Write a report to
your manager and propose which option is more applicable and give more profit to
the company in the long run.
