Music of the Classical Period (1750-1820
The Classical Era, also called “Age of Reason”, is the period from 1750-1820. The
cultural life was dominated by the aristocracy, as the patrons of musicians and artists generally
influenced the arts. Significant changes in musical forms and style were made.
The term classical denotes conformity with the principles and characteristics of Ancient
Greek and Roman literature and art which were formal, elegant, simple, free, and dignified.
Harmony and texture is homophonic in general. The dynamics of loud and soft was clearly
shown through the extensive use of crescendo and diminuendo. A style of broken chord
accompaniment called Alberti Bass was practiced.
Famous works
Surprise Symphony
The Clock
The Military
Although he was a musician’s musician, after his death in 1809 Haydn’s music was
frequently dismissed as inferior to that of Mozart and a mere precursor to Beethoven’s
compositions. However, it has rightly been said that few music innovations in the century
following Haydn’s death could not be traced back to his works.

He is a child prodigy and the most amazing
genius in musical history.
Famous works
The Marriage of Figaro
Don Giovanni
The Magic Flutes
Eine Kleine Nactmusik
Symphony no. 40 in G Major
Sonata no. 11 in A Major K311
While always noted for its formal beauty and elegance, Mozart’s music was usually
dismissed in the century after his death as a historically interesting precursor to Beethoven’s.
Only more recently, as an antidote to Romanticism and Modernity, has his name become a
byword for musical perfection.

Classical Music and Neoclassicism
During the Classical era, music was not the only art form to find inspiration in Ancient
Greece and Rome. The era between 1750 and 1800 is called Neoclassicism. This period was
a return to the classic ideals of the ancients. Painters, sculptors and architects were also
finding inspiration in the said period. Among the tremendous events of the period were the
reign of Napoleon Bonaparte and Benjamin Franklin’s experiment with electricity in 1751.
and the
young like the paintings of the time, can be seen as an exercise in harmony, order,
balance and structure.
The twenty-four hour rule, the unity of time, action and space was still in effect in opera
and theatre.
Classical Paintings and Its Greatest Artists
One of the prominent paintings in the classical
era is “The Oath of Horatii” that was made by one of
the famous artists in the classical history, Jacques-
Louis David.
Some of the renowned Classical paintings are The Death of Marat, Napoleon Crossing
the Alps, The Apotheosis of Homer, and the Portrait of Napoleon on the Imperial Throne.

RELATING CLASSICAL MUSIC TO ARCHITECTURE
Architectural thinking became the greatest concern of these composers. Whereas
contrast is the essence of Classical music – a contrast of dynamics, music shifting back
and forth from forte to piano– the contrast of register with wide-ranging melodies and wide
spaces between base and soprano – the contrast of mood, even within one movement of a
work, the Classical style of music is always conceived as an architectural entity.
Compositions have many starts and stops, but all fit together in a beautiful ‘ensemble’.
The movements within a composition alternate between one short phrase with another, one
entire section with another section – all perfected in the architectural concepts of the Sonata
form.
1. Temple Style- was quite unusual in the Classical age. Architects were principally
focused and emphasized on applying classical elements to churches and modern
buildings such as palazzos and villas.
2. Palladian Style- Palladian buildings were based on the prominent architect of Late
Renaissance, Andrea Palladio. Buildings were mainly introduced the vertical
supports within a balustrade known as “balusters” or “spindels.”
Robert Adam was known as the Palladian architect of the neoclassical period.
He designed the well-known American civic buildings- The White House and the United
States Capitol.
