Learning activity 1

Evidence: The time is now

This evidence is divided into two parts: A composition and an audio file. Read the
instructions below and make sure you complete both tasks.

A. Answer the questions below. Use the examples as models of the grammar and
vocabulary you have to use.

1. Why didn’t you study English before? (List at least 5 reasons in a


composition.)

Example:

One of the reasons why I didn’t study English before it is because I thought it
was too difficult. I didn’t understand my English teacher at school and that
was frustrating.
1 I did not study English before because it was not my forte to learn foreign
languages, to be honest it was very difficult for me.

2 at that time I had no reason to learn English, I was not interested and did not have
the need to learn it.

3 Another reason was that when I was in high school, everything had instructions in
Spanish, so there was no need to learn English.

4 I did not understand my English teacher at school and that was frustrating, she did
not have pedagogy when teaching her class, she was also disrespectful with the
whole course.

5 The main reason I didn't study English before was because there were no financial
resources, so I studied what high school offered.

2. How different would things be if you had learned English before? (Name and
explain at least 5 things.)

Example:

If I had learned English some years ago I would have accepted a job a
multinational company offered me five years ago. One of the requirements
was to speak English and my level back then was very low.

1 If I had learned English before, probably I would have my English certification.

2 If I had learned English before, I would be working as a translator for a private trip
agency, giving information about the tourist places in Colombia.

3 If I had learned English before, I would have gone to the US or to another country
where the main language was English

4 If I had learned English before, I would now be an English teacher at a school or


other institution in Colombia.

5 If I had learned English before, that would been so helpful to achieve my personal
goals at the university.
B. Record an audio file of yourself answering the following questions. Use the
examples as models of the grammar and vocabulary you have to use.

1. Why are you studying English? (List and explain at least 4 reasons.)

Example:

I’m studying English because I finally decided that if I want to improve my


professional profile becoming bilingual is essential.

2. In what ways are you going to benefit from this learning?

Example:

Being competent in English is going to increase the opportunities of landing a more


satisfying and better-paid job. We live in an international open market and English
is the most important language.

1. Why do you study English? (List and explain at least 4 reasons).

-I am studying English because I finally realized that companies are


demanding advanced English to hire.
-I am studying English because in the future I want to go live in the United
States
-I am studying English because I finally understood that I could expand my
work field by studying it
-I am studying English because I understood that English is in some way the
universal language
2. In what ways will you benefit from this learning?

Being proficient in English will increase the chances of getting a great job for better
pay. We also live in an international open market and English is the language that
all countries use to do international business.
