As for so many businesses, 2020 has
been challenging. ‘Of course, COVID-19
has had an impact, but we aim to be as agile

online presence and everyone who could
work safely after the first lockdown eased
did so.’ Lucy has no doubt that, despite
everything, the festive season will be as busy
as it always is. ‘We usually start planning our
campaign as early as spring,’ she says. ‘This
year we’re launching our Three Seasons Gin in
Selfridges for Christmas, which features rose
petals, blackcurrant leaf and lemon verbena,
with our biannual Seasonal Gin to follow later.’
Despite now having a team of more than
40 people, an international presence and a

all started with just the two of us in this special

difference. In Birdie Fortescue’s
Norfolk home, she’s placed her

CENTRE STAGE
While they make an impressive entrance to
a home – and are an ideal place for an over-
sized Christmas tree – large staircase hallways
can sometimes feel as though they lack
a purpose. Instead of just filling one with a
traditional console table, think about giving
it another role as a dining room. As the need
to encourage eating together becomes even
greater, this approach puts dining squarely
at the centre of the home, making it more
challenging for teenagers to escape to their
bedrooms feigning no knowledge of the time.
FESTIVE FOLIAGE
Blue and green can always be seen together
– particularly at this time of year. Liberally use
textiles, such as rugs, cushions, a tablecloth
and napkins, to create a warm and welcoming
scene. Not only does it look considered and
comfortable, but the fabrics importantly
help to absorb the volume of voices. Keep
the mood light by suspending a disco ball Disco ball, £44.99, Mirror

When dining areas are

it’s a good idea to look for

THE LAYOUT
Accessed via double doors, the baker’s table,
framed by the rich red housekeeper’s cupboard,
makes a glorious focal point upon entering.
All things cooking-related are at one end, and
cleaning-related items are at the other end,
with an armchair by the window for tea breaks.

1 HOUSEKEEPER’S
CUPBOARD
Inspired by a traditional cook’s
larder, the housekeeper’s
cupboard is an impressive
width, with refrigeration for food
at one end, then a dresser-style
middle section with wine storage
MADE TO MEASURE below, and finally a dried food
store at the end nearest the Aga.
3 CLEVER DESIGN
Here, the oak interior includes a
marble ‘cold shelf’ that’s perfect
for cheese platters and butter.
SOLUTIONS
Herbs and spices are stored
neatly on racks behind both
doors, and the space also
includes an electric socket for a
coffee machine or toaster.
2 SHAPELY UPSTANDS
‘We love the detail on the upstands that surround
the sink units. This was inspired by old washstand ends.
We were looking to add more detail – a vintage touch
– to this elevation and Jasper suggested the curved end,
bullnose front edge and capping on the main length
of upstand. It was pure genius and never fails to make
me smile,’ says Jemima. ‘It’s also really practical when
wiping up water around the sink, especially when the
girls have been “helping” with the dishes!’
3 POT FILLER
While the Mathesons were keen to utilise every inch
of their spacious kitchen, at 7.5m long, the journey from
Aga to sink was quite a trek. A pot filler was the solution.
‘We didn’t need a second sink, not least because The Bianco Eclipse

Baking has become a national hobby this year,
so it’s apt that this bread bag, designed by The

longer and free from mould. Not only does it

Any green-fingered foodie will adore a gift from
The Gluttonous Gardener. Our favourites are the
