Types of Speech Styles

The context dictates and affects the way people communicate, which results
in various speech styles. Speech style means the form of language that the
speaker uses which is characterized by the degree of formality (Joos, 1968).

There are five types of speech styles.

1. Intimate- This style is private, which occurs between or among

close family members or intimate individuals. It is also used for self-
talk. The language used in this style may not be shared in public.

Examples:

Very close friends sharing secrets, couples making plans,

family planning reunions or reminiscing family events/ moments.

2. Casual- This is an informal style which is common between groups

and among peers. Groups of people like insiders or friends but don’t
have a very close relations use casual style in conversation for they
have something to share in common and have shared background
information. Jargons, slang, street language, gay language or vulgar
words are used.

Examples:

Phone calls, chats, communicating while playing sports

3. Consultative- This style is the standard one and used in a semi-formal
communication. Here, professional or mutually acceptable language
is a must in this style. Most of the time, speaker’s sentences end to
be shorter and spontaneous, the speaker does not usually plan what
he/she wants to say, most operational among others.

Examples:

Communication between teachers and students, employers

and employees, doctor and patient, judge and lawyer, President
and his/ her constituents.

4. Formal- This style is used in formal settings that is why it is

straightforward.. Unlike the consultative style, this is one- way. Also,
the speaker avoids using slang terminologies. What the speaker say
is something that has been prepared beforehand.

Examples:

Preaching or sermons by priests and ministers, State of

the Nation Address (SONA) of the president, formal speeches or
pronouncements by judges, welcome addresses

5. Frozen- This style is “frozen” in time and remains unchanged. It mostly

occurs in ceremonies. This style does not require any feedback from
the audience and most formal communicative style

Examples:

Preamble to the Constitution, Lord’s Prayer, Allegiance to

country or flag, Marriage Ceremonies

WRAP IT UP

Speech styles are forms of language that are affected by the context of
the situation. Also, it dictates the level of formality of a context.

The five types of speech styles are casual, intimate, consultative,

formal, frozen. Unconsciously, these styles are the effects of the way people
communicate in their everyday lives. For instance, a family gathering such as
reunions, birthdays or just a simple family dinner the way the people involve
communicate intimately as compared to how casually acquaintances, peers
and friends communicate with one another. People who meets with their boss,
and a meeting with doctor or lawyer, they use the standard one which is the
consultative style. On the other hand, when the President gives his SONA he
would use the formal speech style. Lastly, the style that remains unchanged is
called frozen speech style. Examples of this are Our Lord’s Prayer, Allegiance
to our country and the Preamble of the Constitution.
