Lesson Plan

Name of lesson: Fantastic 2D Shapes and How to Identify Them

Grade Level Appropriateness: First Grade - Second Grade

Technology Content Standard Addressed:

● ISTE Standards For Educators - 6C: Create learning opportunities that challenge students

to use a design process and computational thinking to innovate and solve problems.

● ISTE Standards For Students - 1D: Students understand the fundamental concepts of

technology operations, demonstrate the ability to choose, use and troubleshoot current

technologies and are able to transfer their knowledge to explore emerging technologies.

Other Content Standard Addressed:

● Common Core Standard - First Grade:

○ CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.G.A.1 - Distinguish between defining attributes

(e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g.,

color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining

attributes.

Objective:

● Students will understand how to use a tablet/iPad, understand proper care of tablets, and

understand how the software Goodnotes works in order to be able to accurately draw a

2D shape corresponding to its shape name and accurately identify different shapes
Materials needed to facilitate the lesson:

● Tablet or iPad (One for each group)

● Stylus

● Goodnotes (or any drawing app that has a shape function

● Post-it notes with different shapes written on them - Circle, Square, Rectangle,

Parallelogram, Diamond (Two for each group)

Suggested group size: 2 student group

Procedures:

1. Introduce the lesson with a class discussion about shapes. Ask them to list all of the

shapes that they know.

2. Ask how they know it is a shape. Ask about the identifying features of the shapes that

they have listed:

a. How many sides does this shape have?

b. How many corners does this shape have?

c. Is it a closed shape?

3. Discuss what makes a shape a shape.

a. Their identifying features

i. Number of sides

ii. Number of corners

b. Keep in mind that color, size, and orientation are not qualifying answers.
4. Give out iPads and styluses to groups and tell students to go to the Goodnotes app

It looks like three lines and a squiggly line and a pen

5. Then show students the basic components of

Goodnotes. They will be using the pen, eraser, and shape tool (creates a straighter line.

However, it does not create shapes. the students will have to draw a complete shape.) See

diagram below.
6. Each group will have two shapes to draw and identify. Pass out the post-it notes two for

each group and make sure both are different in each group. Each student has a single

shape that they have to draw and each student has a different color. Their partner has to

identify that shape with the # of sides and # of corners. (Both names of the students

should be on the drawing with their corresponding color. Example: John has red and

Lucy has blue, the name John should be written in red and the name Lucy written in

blue.) It should be on one page. This is what the assignment should look like for both

students (STUDENT SAMPLE)

• Assessment: This assignment is graded individually with a rubric.
