THE PARENTS’ PERCEIVED LEVEL OF EFFECTIVENESS OF THE NEWBORN


SCREENING PROCESS PERFORMED IN SELECTED PRIVATE AND
PUBLIC HOSPITAL PROVIDERS IN METRO MANILA

INTRODUCTION

Every person is a gift from God. And one’s life is a treasure beyond compare. In this

cause, every child being born is given ultimate care. The implementation of newborn screening is

a must in order to ascertain the health condition of a child as early as 72 hours being born.

Considering the fast pace of technology, the newborn screening procedure is innovated and now

the old procedure is already expanded. Since nurses play a key role in conducting the newborn

screening process, they are also responsible in educating the respective parents of the babies.

Newborn Screening Process can be done at private or public hospitals and parents from

all walks of life don’t have any reason not to let their respective newborns being screened. The

researchers sought the need to dig deeper into the study on the perception of parents who already

went through the process both in public and private hospital providers. Through this proposed

study, the researchers aim to be more knowledgeable in conducting inquiries of parents of

newborn babies where to undergo with the Newborn Screening Process.

Nonetheless, the newborn screening procedure is a must for every newborn in order to

ascertain the possible risk and safety condition of every newborn child. And without massive

awareness campaign that the Newborn Screening Process is readily available at both public and

hospital providers, many parents couldn’t let their newborn avail the Newborn Screening

Process.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Volume of newborn babies is routinely screened every day and various diseases are

detected through the Newborn Screening Process. In this process, dried blood spots are collected

on a filter paper within the 24 to 72 hours after birth. These blood spots are being tested for

multiple conditions from the sample taken.

Screening is just a first step. Even newborn may seem visually healthy , the Newborn

Screening Process may unveil one, two or more diseases, worst thing can happen if such

conditions may be fatal disorders. This is why the role is of the Newborn Screening Process is

very vital to every newborn.

And considering that the procedure is being offered by public and private hospital

providers, the parents must be aware of the pros and cons which facility to bring their newborn.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

The researchers sought to determine the parents’ level of perceived effectiveness of the

Newborn Screening procedure in public and private hospital providers, with the following

questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of babies’ parents who underwent Newborn Screening in
terms of the following:

1.1 Age;
1.2 Sex;
1.3 Educational Level;
1.4 Economic Status:
1.4a Income Level
2. What is the respondent parents’ level of perception on Screening Process performed at
Public Hospital Providers in terms of the following?

2.1 Cost
2.2a Screening Process
2.2b Follow-up Testing
2.2 Policy;
2.3 Accuracy:
2.3a Number of diseases identified
2.4 Time performed;
2.5 Convenience;

3. What is the respondent parents’ level of perception on Screening Process performed at


Private Hospital Providers in terms of the following?

3.1 Cost
2.2a Screening Process
2.2b Follow-up Testing
3.2 Policy;
3.3 Accuracy:
2.3a Number of diseases identified
3.4 Time performed;
3.5 Convenience;

HYPOTHESIS

NULL HYPOTHESIS:

There is no significant difference on the respondents’ perceived effectiveness of the


Newborn Screening Process performed in selected Private & Public Hospital in Metro Manila.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study aims to determine the respondents’ perceived effectiveness of the Newborn
Screening Process performed in selected Private & Public Hospital in Metro Manila.

The result of the proposed study will be beneficial to the following:

THE RESEARCHERS

This proposed study will provide comprehensive knowledge to the researchers and will
certainly enable them to be a competent future nurses, who plays vital role in the implementation
of the Newborn Screening Process.
THE PARENTS

Parents play the main cast towards the implementation of the Newborn Screening

Process. And through this proposed study, parents will learn the importance of the process, that

it is also readily available not only in private hospitals but also to public hospitals to cater the

masses.

The parents’ awareness on the two options will definitely be helpful for the Health Care

Team to implement the procedure.

THE ACADEME

The researchers hope to make remarkable contribution in the Nursing Profession. The

nurses being the main performers in implementing the Newborn Screening Procedure which is

done in the hospital setting will generate thorough presentation of the whole procedure as well as

the latest innovations of which the academe must be kept abreast of continuous changes.
