On 31 May, 1970, the largest earthquake to ever hit


Peru shook the ground for 45 seconds. Buildings and
bridges collapsed, but no one expected another terrible
event to follow what had just happened. The
earthquake had sent snow and ice falling down Mount
Huascarán – it was an avalanche. Jacobo Hijo was not
in the path of the avalanche, but he was an eyewitness.
Here is what he wrote in his journal about that day…

I was on my way back home to Yungay when I felt the


ground start to shake. The earthquake lasted about a metres wide and 1.6 kilometres long, and it rushed
minute, and luckily I wasn’t injured. After, I heard a loud down the mountain at over 280 kilometres per hour! A
sound,I looked over at Mount Huascarán and saw a few minutes after the roaring stopped, I climbed down
giant mass of snow going down the mountain! It was from the tree and looked out over Yungay. I was
moving so quickly! I ran and climbed up a big tree relieved to be alive but I couldn’t believe what I saw.
cause I felt so scared . The avalanche was 910 Snow and ice had completely covered the whole town!
It was a terrible experience.
