animals, including humans, in an ecosystem interact with one
another and with the nonliving components in the ecosystem. Key
concepts include
a) plant and animal adaptations;
b) organization of populations, communities, and ecosystems and
how they interrelate;
c) flow of energy through food webs;
d) habitats and niches;
e) changes in an organism’s niche at various stages in its life cycle;
and
f) influences of human activity on ecosystems.
In this activity, the students will learn about butterflies going
through metamorphosis and watch it happen first hand. In the
classroom, we will watch and observe 5 caterpillars grow and turn
into butterflies from Insect Lore. We will start the lesson by the
students creating a KWL chart explaining what they already know
about metamorphosis and what they want to know. Then we will
read the book “The Caterpillar and the Polliwog” by Jack Kent. Once
the lesson is over, the students will go back to their KWL chart and
fill out what they learned.
