• Tonkin Consulting is a medium sized consulting practice with over 130 staff in Adelaide
and we have regional offices in Mt Gambier, Berri and DARWIN.
• The Spatial Services team provides GIS solutions to all discipline areas within the
practice and directly to clients as a specialist service.

Current technology, practices and techniques
• The MapBasic development environment is a complete, BASIC-like

programming language
– Used to create custom applications for use with MapInfo Professional or
special MapInfo runtimes.
– Allows you to customise the geographic functionality of MapInfo
Professional
– Automate repetitive operations and integrate MapInfo Professional with
other applications
Who is using or benefitting from these techniques?
Bushfire Prevention Mapping System

• The Regional Council of Goyder approached Tonkin Consulting to
develop the processes required for the assessment of properties for
Fire Prevention.
• Goyder’s business requirements were researched and developed into a
solution to assist field staff involved in the assessment of properties for
Fire Prevention.
• Solution was developed that enabled data to be collected in the field as
an offline application (data stored locally) or as an online application
(using remote access)

• The data collected be exported to CSV to enable import into Councils
corporate applications as well as enabling mail merge for notices.
• The program utilises MapInfo Professional to help assist in the Property
Inspection for Fire Prevention. With the help of dropdowns, list boxes
and auto-populated data, this program saves time when inspecting
properties in the field.
• To date, Goyder, Clare and Gilbert Valley as well as the Barossa
Councils are using the application with significant time savings...
Ultimately, the system developed by Tonkin Consulting will help councils
create a safer environment for their residents.

AWGPN Health Atlas

• The Adelaide Western General Practice Network was established in
1993 and is primarily funded under the Commonwealth Dept of
Health and Ageing's Outcomes Based Funding (OBF) model
• It is committed to the principles of organisational development and
works collaboratively with other organisations to improve the health of
people in the region.
• The Practice Health Atlas (PHA) is a decision support tool, designed by
the Adelaide Western General Practice Network, for General
Practitioners (GPs), Practice Managers and other Practice staff.

• The problem was that each time an Atlas was ordered, the data had
changed
• The process to create the maps all over again was arduous
• MapBasic script was used to automatically collate the data, load it into
the map, create the layouts and save them as a .JPEG
This method reduced the time it took to create the maps needed for each
Atlas from 2-3 days to 2-3 minutes. That is not an exaggeration
