PEPSI PROJECT 2
Abstract
This paper explores the life of a 14-year-old girl that comes from a low-income family.
The research provided on the subject will talk about her physical, emotional, philosophical,
social, and intellectual development. Each section will be detailed and quotes from the interview
will be established to give the reader “The Real Story”. This paper will go in-depth about the
struggles of a bilingual individual and the educational differences from country to country. This
Biography
The subject interviewed is a 14-year-old girl, currently living in Las Vegas, and attending
middle school in the eighth grade. She was born into a Mexican low-income family, she is the
middle child out of five. The subject moved to Mexico City when she was only 2 years old, she
lived there for about 3 years and attended pre-school in Mexico. After pre-school, her family
decided to move back to Las Vegas, she has lived here ever since and has attended 1st grade
though 8th grade. Transitioning to the U.S Education system was complicated for the subject as
she had to adjust and learn a new language. She was offered to repeat kindergarten as the
teachers thought it was the best option for her to better understand the language and the
education system. Her mom agreed, and she was placed back into kindergarten. The subject
enjoys activities such as reading, watching movies, listing to music and enjoys spending time
with family and friends. Some of her school activities includes her mariachi class, where she
learns how to play the violin, read music and perform in front of people for their annually
mariachi concert. Her grades consist of A’s and B’s she has a GPA 4.0 of and is currently
considering attending a magnet high school. In the future, the subject wished to accomplish
financial stability while working her dream job, of becoming a FBI agent with the Behavioral
Analysis Unit.
Physical Development
Physical development starts in human infancy and continues into late adolescents concentrating
on gross and motor skills. This includes developing control over one’s mind and body. Physical
development can be seen Through her school history, as she has not only physically changed but
also mentally. The subject does not participate in sports, she prefers to play instruments. She is
PEPSI PROJECT 4
currently in a mariachi band, where she learns how to read music, play, and socialize with others
of her same age group. “While learning to play an instrument as a child provides life-long
benefits to the brain, taking music lessons in your 60s – or older – can boost your brain’s health
as well, helping to decrease loss of memory and cognitive function. o be part of a mariachi band.
Where she learns how to read music and play an instrument. “(PR News). Physical development
plays an important role, it prepares students for the future. Physical development is connected to
cognitive development. This allow students to learn one thing after the other.
Emotional Development.
The way we deal with feelings changes over time, Children depend on other people in
their environment to provide stimulation. “As they grow, children develop the ability to
recognize feelings. Their emotions are also increasingly influenced by their thinking. They
become more aware of their own feelings and better able to recognize and understand those of
other people.” (Beyondblue - Healthy Families). Emotional development during the years has
change drastically as she has experience major life changing events. The subject has transitioning
from learning a new language to moving to a different country. She experiences feelings such as
fear, anger, loneliness and sadness. As she had to adjust to a new routine where she had no
friends. This as she mentioned allowed her to become stronger and encourage her to work harder
during school. Being bilingual help her develop important cognitive skills such as problem
solving, logic, critical thinking and creativity. Her emotions pushed her to become organized and
to obtain better grades. This is one thing that will shape her life forever as researcher believe that
“bilingual helps to delay cognitive decline and the symptoms of Alzheimer.” (Angela PackZia).
As educators, we can model the things to help students like her achieve her goal, Like mentioned
before learning a second language was difficult. “it has often been studied by social cognitive
PEPSI PROJECT 5
researchers who are interested in the effects of modeling. The research we describe in this
section is just a sample of what has appeared in the literature in the past several years.”
(Snowman J & McCown). Modeling for children and helping them with task will allow them to
excel.
Philosophical Development.
Philosophical development consists of the subject’s ability to further their thoughts and
ideas. The subject is capable of developing her thought and thinking further than the regular
children does. She enjoys watching criminal and doctor shows as she believes that it allows her
to understand her future career. The subject mentions that watching shows such as “Criminal
Minds” has taught her to always look into a person behavior and physical movements, as those
will give out clues. She is looking to become an FBI agent with the Behavioral Analysis Unit.
She believes that philosophy plays an important role in her future career as she will need to make
scenarios and explore divers options to come to an answer. Philosophical Development prepares
students for a long-life learning experience and will enhance intellectual and social existence. It
will allow students to better understand their thinking and acting and will open a big a new
world. Just as Socrates once said “The unexamined life is not worth living”. I strongly belive that
this student is curious and want to know why things happen. She wants to examine the world she
wants to find the answers to everything. She has developed a philosophical life where she cannot
Social Interactions.
Social interaction influences the development of a ones personality and identify. “By
hierarchies and roles, as well as solidarity and shared identities among group members.” (Social
PEPSI PROJECT 6
Psychology and interaction). The subject is able to socialize with others without a problem as she
is part of a mariachi band. As she mentions, “Socializing with others allows me to understand
them and treat them better, I like learning about their families and traditions.” A individuals,
social interaction allows them to see themselves through the eyes of others, and learn who they
are and how they fit into society. The subject states that when watching one of her favorite shows
she learned that extreme human isolation, can lead to anger, frustration, and can create serial
killers. She believes that when one is isolated they become angry with other, they begin to envy
and can lead to them attraction other humans. The subject is not only able to socialize but is also
mentioned before the subject is capable of reasoning and thinking. She shared her knowledge
about isolation and how socializing has made her a more educated person. Intellectual
development begins at an early age. Activities such a riding a bicycle, painting, drawing,
dancing, allows children’s brain to exercises and learn new things. Children learn and grow in
different faces; many children struggle with IDD. “Intellectual development disorder (IDD) is a
reasoning, planning, judgment, abstract thinking, academic learning and experiential learning.”
(Child Mind). Children with this disorder will have it for the reminder of their life, rehabilitation
Recommendations
The subject intellectual growth is highly accelerated. She is well aware of people’s
behavior, body language and writing. She uses philosophy as a way of expressing herself, her
social and intellectual skills are greater than any eight graders. She is able to think for herself and
PEPSI PROJECT 7
is curious about the outside world. One important thing to remember is that every child is
different. Unnecessary pressure will only cause problems. Allow children to develop their
thinking skills on their own. Providing the child with the correct information regarding her career
choice will impact her life and her decision. “FBI agents may find themselves gathering
intelligence to thwart terrorist threats, investigating organized crime, or pursuing criminals with
the aid of other state and local law officials.” ( Criminal Justice). Teaching the subject from a
young age about gender bias and explaining what the possibilities and the risk that comes with
the job will open many doors for her. As show in graph A the Gender breakdown.
Figure ones is a chart based on college enrollments. When speaking to the subject about
her goals to become an FBI agent she mentioned the enrollment rate. Hispanics belong to the
lower class as they are viewed unequal by everyone. She mentioned the fear of ejectment she
thinks that her race and color will have a big impact in her future. Unfortunately, this is to be true
as people of color do not have the same advantages as whites. As educators, we must encourage
others to fight for equality and to never give up on their dreams. Teachers and staff must take
steps to stop the inequality between race, as we can see this affects a person point of view about
