Title: Zooming to the Moon Grade Level: K

Source:

Materials needed: Song - Zoom Zoom Zoom We're Going to The Moon Song
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEHBrmZxAf8&feature=youtu.be)

Procedure:

A.S: Do you ever notice how the moon looks different sometimes? Well that is because
there are different moon phases.
1. There are four phases of the moon in what we call the lunar cycle. The first phase
is the new moon (show picture). In this phase the moon is completely dark.
2. The second phase is the first quarter moon (show picture). Only half the moon is
lit in this phase.
3. The third phase is the full moon. Can anyone tell me what the full moon looks
like? That’s right! (show picture) The whole moon is lit up.
4. The last phase of the moon cycle is the last quarter moon (show picture). In this
phase the other half of the moon is lit up.
5. Tell students that today we will be listening to a song and learning to play our
instruments we have found around our houses with them!
6. Tell students we will be working with a drum, a shaker, and a metal item today.
7. Show them the items you have for your instruments and demonstrate the sounds,
i.e. water bottle and pencil - metal, Salt shaker - shaker, tupperware - drum
8. Ask students if they have brought their instruments to class, and give them a few
seconds to go find any item they may have forgotten.
9. Tell the students that we will be playing a song and to listen for a shaker sound, a
drum sound, and a metal sound.
10. Play the song for students all the way through. Ask them:
a. What shaker sound did you hear?
b. What was the metal sound?
c. Did you hear a drum sound?
11. Before starting the song again (and before adding instruments), tell students we
will be patting our legs when the song goes “zoom zoom zoom”, clapping our
hands when the song goes “We’re going to the moon”, and that we will be patting
our head when the song does the countdown. Have them wave their arms for the
rest of the song that isn’t assigned a specific movement.
12. Play the song again.
13. During this run through of the song, pause it after every “blast off” and ask a
different question about moon phases. Make sure to show pictures.
a. We are going to the moon and it’s in the first quarter phase! Who can tell
me what it looks like?
b. Show pictures of moon phases and point to one. Which phase is the moon
in in this picture?
14. Tell the students that we will now be adding our instruments to different parts of
the song.
15. Zoom Zoom Zoom - Drums; We’re going to the moon - Metals; If you want to
take a trip.. All instruments!; Countdown - Shakers
16. Split students into three different groups
a. Drums - Jocelyn, Zoe, Haley, Jianna, Garret, Llesenia, Dr. McConkey
b. Metals - Andriena, Natalie, Kelsey, Spencer, Kendall, Addie, Stephanie
c. Shakers - Gabe, Alison, Diana, Mackenzie, Olivia, Chelsey, Skylar
17. Play the song again for the students and demonstrate and remind students of the
different instrument parts.
18. Again, pause after every “blast off” and ask a question.
a. Okay, we are headed to the moon again! This time it’s in the new moon
phase. Who can tell me what a new moon looks like?
b. Show pictures of the moon phases again and point to the phase you have
yet to ask about. Who can tell me which phase the moon is in in this
picture?
19. Play the song one more time and have students figure the instrument parts out on
their own.

Closure: Who can tell me one phase of the moon? Can anyone tell me one instrument we
used today?

Educational Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will have learned the
different phases of the moon.
