Self-Assessment Worksheet: Year 12 Film Opening Sequence Production

Please complete the worksheet by answering each of the following questions in full after
you have viewed the latest edit of your opening sequence.

Question 1: Which film genre is your opening sequence appropriate for? Is this the same
film genre that you intended to produce an opening sequence for? Explain.

We intended to create an opening sequence that suited the psychological thriller genre,
unfortunately I don’t feel as though what we have made best represents this genre
because it doesn’t contain the conventions that would usually be presented in this type of
film.

Question 2: Which conventions of the genre do you think you have applied effectively,
why?

The conventions that we have applied in our opening sequence which is usually
represented in this genre would be our use of jump shots and random sequence of shots.
As well as this I also think that we applied conventions such as the atmosphere presented
to the audience would suit this genre.

Question 3: Which conventions have you challenged? How have you done this?

Usually in a psychological thriller the main character would normally be a man whereas we
have decided to challenge these conventions by using a female lead character.

Question 4: Who are the target audience? Do you think your opening sequence would
appeal to your target audience? Why?

I think that our opening sequence would appeal to those who are between the ages of 16-
21; I think that our opening sequence would apply to our target audience because it
contains some of the conventions that would usually appeal to those of this age group.

Question 5: What do you need to improve about your opening sequence? Explain your
reasoning.

I think that we need to continue to improve our opening sequence in terms of the editing
process such as adding some sound e.g. music, voiceover and SFX. I feel a s though if we
were to do this then our opening sequence will be much more effective in terms of
applying and containing the right conventions of this genre so that the audience will be
more aware and able to identify the genre.

Question 6: How long is your opening sequence precisely?

Our opening sequence is around about 1 minute, 58 seconds.

Question 7: What has been your role in the production; from the initial idea to this point?
How have you fulfilled your role?
My role in this production has been varied, I have done much more than planned from our
initial idea for example I was the only character in the opening sequence, I filmed some
elements of the sequence as well as sharing the role of the editing process.

Question 8: How have you developed your skills in the use of technology? Give
examples.

I feel as though my skills in terms of the use of technology have improved such as during
the editing process when were using the imovie software, as well as this when filming
when using different shot types, movement and angles have improved because I feel more
confident when filming with the camera.

Please list three words to describe your opening sequence to someone who has not seen
it yet:

Quick shots
Dark
Thriller

Any other comments/observations/reflections at this stage:

Yes I don’t feel as though this is a good opening sequence in terms of the genre.
