How are your maths skills?

If you fancy testing them to the limit, take a look at this brainteaser, which has
been going viral in recent days after being shared on Facebook by one Randall
Jones from Colombus, Ohio:

The problem in full, in case it's not appearing in your browser:

1+4=5

2 + 5 = 12

3 + 6 = 21

8 + 11 = ?

So - what's the answer to 8 + 11?

Randall's post has more than 1.1 million comments so far, and the vast
majority of people are suggesting either 40 or 96 as the answer. So which of
those is right - and why?
The solution
Well - either 40 or 96 could be the right answer, depending on how you look at
it.

For 2 + 5 to equal 12, and 3 + 6 to equal 21, there's clearly something missing.
Here are the two most commonly suggested solutions.

• For the answer to be 40: add the solution to the previous line to the numbers
on the next line, EG:

1 + 4 = 5

5 + 2 + 5 = 12

12 + 3 + 6 = 21

21 + 8 + 11 = 40

• For the answer to be 96: multiply the first number by the second number,
then add the outcome to the first number, EG:

1 + (1 x 4) = 5

2 + (2 x 5) = 12

3 + (3 x 6) = 21

8 + (8 x 11) = 96

(First number x Second number) + first number = Answer

(1 x 4) + 1 = 5
(2 x 5) + 2 = 12
(3 x 6) + 3 = 21

Therefore... (8 x 11) + 8 = 96.

You multiply both numbers and then add the first number in the equation to the product. So it would be
1*4=4 then 4+1=5
So the 8+11 would be 88+8 which is 96
Gary Carter Not a 'math' problem, but a 'triangle' puzzle. The answer is 40. 5+2+5 = 12. 12+3+6 = 21.
21+8+11 = 40.

Shayan Moazeni Guys 40 is NOT the correct answer

Because if u go by adding the result of the previous result to the current one, u are depending on the
previous result. But in the picture, a few steps are skipped. After 3+6 comes 4+7, then 5+8 and... And in
the end, it'll be 8+11+(previous sum=77)=96
(8+11 is NOT the forth step, it's the 8th)
THE RESULT IS EITHER WAY 96

Samuel L. Drew 52. You increase the multiple of the second integer by one, so:

1+4*1=5
2+5*2=12
3+6*3=21
8+11*4=52

Kaushik Kulkarni We override the "+" operator in expression n+m as (n*m+n). So in 8+11, n=8 and
m=11 so (8*11+8=96)

Jeff Antonson The answer is 19. Math as a language is constant. The fact that two incorrect equations
appear above does not alter the fact that 8+11=19.

Shreyan Bardhan well in the philosophy of mathematics solutions to this type of questions which has
both logical and mathematical solutions both belong to 'logical reasoning' group. So acc. to me both the
answers are either correct or either imperfect.

Fredrick Barker-Garzozi The Telegraph got it wrong. There is only one answer, and it is 96. For even if
you follow the logic that leads to the 40, it is incomplete. It is a progression, so you need to add all the
intermediate steps that are missing i.e.:
1+4=5
5+2+5=12
12+3+6=21
21+4+7=32
32+5+8=45
45+6+9=59
59+7+10=76
76+8+11=96
Where the two numbers to be added keep increasing by one. Therefore the answer is 96 either way you
look at it. On a progression you can't simply skip steps because they aren't written. Anybody who argues
otherwise (including the Telegraph) guys need to go back to school

Elisha Sutherland Explanations shouldn't be a massive essay.

Just add 1 to the second number, of each line, then multiply.

1x5 = 5, 2x6 = 12, 3x7 = 21, 8x12 = 96

Steve Meeus It's obvious.

1+4=5
2+5(doubled)=12
3+6(trebled=21
8+11(quadrupaled)=52
There is no certain link between the first three digits and the multiples of the secondarys.

Gloria Ugochukwu This is rather primary 3 quantitative reasoning, "8*11+8". Using BODMAS, u will
know that the answer is 96

Tamer Eid The answer is so simple. And its not hard math Q. The addition opporator `+` has only one
way even if 4 miss leading answers previously provided trust your self and answer it correctly. The
answer will always be 8+11=19.

Ulysse Haute Savoie legit easy though emoticon tongue a+b=a*b+c with c = 1 to 8 and dc = 1 => also
a(b+1), so 8+11=8*11+8=96, problem is without conventions on factoring and or adding there probably
are multiple solutions, like the fibonacci-like pattern denoted here emoticon unsure (40 then)

Michael Higaki Marx Gomes, you skipped 4 to 7. Otherwise 1x5=5 2x6=12 8x12=96 O'K? (4+7=32,
5+8=45, 6+9=60, 7+10=77, 8+11=96)

Михаил Масокин 52. elementary, Watson. In the nth member of the sequence, the second number is
times n. Thereore, in the fourth member, 8 + 11 x 4 = 52. Took about 30 seconds to work out

Badrinath Jayakumar Three possible answers:
1. 40
2. 96
3. 52

For third one:

1+ 1*4=5
2+2*5= 12
3+ 3*6= 21
8+ 4* 11= 52

For second one:

1+ 1*4=5
2+2*5= 12
3+ 3*6= 21
8+ 8*11= 96

First one is very intuitive

Paul Clark They are not equations It's a cute puzzle but not a maths problem

Owen Cōwley 2+5≠12
3+6≠21
stupid "maths" problem

Grant Mitchell 19.
