Modification Instructions for Anti

SW28(0) Polishing Ring in cylinder liner
This is a supplement of Technical Bulletin TB280/1302/25
describing the modification of liners and pistons for the
application of Anti Polishing Rings (APR)

1. General overview As a result of conti-

nuous development
Wärtsilä has presen-
ted a special method
for eliminating the
polishing of the cylin-
der liner.
This polishing occurs
when the ring land on
the piston crown is
filled with hard carbon
de-posits and the
piston during the
stroke tilts in the
cylinder. The carbon
deposits rub against
the cylinder wall
polishing it,
i.e. removing the, for the lubricating so important, honing
grooves. The introduction of the Anti Polishing Ring in
Wärtsilä engines virtually eliminates this polishing of the
cylinder liner. This ring is standard on all new Wärtsilä
engines and can now easily be retrofitted to all SW280
engines. This modification can either be performed entirely by
Wärtsilä or by the customer, in which case Wärtsilä
assistance is recommended

2. Main features The main feature of the Anti Polishing ring is keeping the
piston crown ring land clean providing reduced load on the
cylinder liner. This will lower the lubricating oil consumption
and decrease the load on the lubricating oil due to less
combustion deposits entering the lubricating oil system thus
giving increased filter lifetime. The outcome of all this is the
possibility of increasing and optimising the time between
overhauls. The extent of need for modification can be divided
into four main options

Main features • The first one is the modification of the existing parts. This
option is cost efficient because the concerned existing
parts are utilised provided they are in reusable condition.
• The second option is to modify the liner and exchange the
piston.
• The third option is to modify the piston and exchange the
liner.
• The forth option is to exchange the liner as well as the
piston.

All options of the Anti Polishing Ring modification can be

performed either one cylinder at a time or the whole engine at
a time depending on customer needs.

3. Installation The installation work for the different options is the same
but the whole work effort varies depending on which option
is chosen. Option 1 involves the most machining work
which Wärtsilä performs according to agreement. Option 2
includes machining of the liner, option 3 machining of the
piston. In option 4 there is no machining involved at all as
all parts are supplied ready to install.
The removing, dismantling, assembling and mounting of all
components involved are described in the SW280 Manual.
The removal and fitting of these parts during the modification
does in principal not differ significantly from the same
procedures during a normal overhaul.

4. Scope of supply All parts needed for the modification work itself are supplied
in the package. The most economical and efficient way to
perform the modification is to combine it with a scheduled
cylinder head and piston overhaul. Updating of
documentation in the form of relevant after sales information
for the spare parts as well as technical bulletins etc. will be
provided with the modification package.

5. Limitations 5.1 Parts to be reused

All parts to be reused have to be within tolerances as stated
in the engine manual. However the actual liner diameter
should not exceed 280.2 mm before honing or 280.3 mm
after honing and before machining.

5.2 Preparation jobs

It is supposed that the customer will perform a piston
overhaul at the same time as the modification is carried out.
Parts that has to be dismantled are:

• Cylinder head
• Piston
• Connecting rod
• Cylinder liner

5.3 Required Power Supplies

Following supplies must be available at the job site.
• Electrical supply, 110/220 V, 50 or 60 Hz
• Air supply of 6 bar (working air supply)
