Art Unit Plan

Part One - Overview


Teacher Name: ​Estefania Huerta​ Grade Level: 1 Duration of time: ​5 days
Title​: Splashing away with paint
Objective(s):​ Students will observe and interpret paintings of themselves or experiences.
Students will learn to create shapes and draw lines to make a design similarly to Modigliani.
Students will learn techniques such as color blending in order to complete their watercolors and
pastels.

Part Three – Underlying Foundations for Teaching the Art Unit


• Prior Skills and Knowledge:​ Prior to this lesson, students will have had the opportunity to
work with watercolors and how color blending works. For example, students will fill out a color
wheel and understand that colors such as red and blue combined will create purple.
• Vocabulary:​ Watercolor, blending, color wheel, gray scale,

Day 2:
Students will fill out color wheel and understand color mixing.
Students by then will understand who Modigliani is and the techniques they used such as shapes
and drawing lines through portraits/paintings.
Students will have begun their portrait of themselves or a drawing of an experience (ex. The
beach, birthday party, etc.).
Students will incorporate Modigliani’s techniques to their work.

Day 4:
Student show progress towards their first draft of the assignment (draw their portrait)
Students show progress of Modigliani’s techniques
Students will have used/added ulining tape before painting with watercolors.
Students show progress in color blending (look at their color wheel for examples).
Students will have let their painting try so it will be ready for the next class to do a walk around
gallery.

Part Five – Timeline and Sequence


Unit Sequence:
● DAY 1 (45​ ​minutes) – (Look at,study, and discuss Modigliani. As well as their
techniques such as shapes and lines. Show examples of Modigliani’s work. VA:RE8)
● DAY 2 (30​ ​minutes) – (Review Modigliani’s techniques as well as previous skills.
Students will be introduced to color mixing and have the chance to practice on a piece of
paper.)
● DAY 3 (30​ ​minutes) – ( I will provide a powerpoint that demonstrates that is expected &
examples from previous years of this exact assignment. This will allow students to get an
idea of what they might want to sketch out. W-2, RI-7)
● DAY 4 (50 minutes) – (Students will draw the outline of their portrait/drawing with
pencil lightly. VA:Cr2.1)
● DAY 5 (90 minutes) – (Students will use their color wheel in order to create color mixing
with water color. Students will add their choice of color mixing to their portrait/drawing.

Part Six- Special Needs


Accommodations: ​For the students who have a learning disability, there will be a modified
lesson. The rubric as well be modified depending on how severe the disability is and the needs of
the child. This project includes a worksheet and class discussions, the student will be given these
materials already completely (Teachers version) because they are unable to participate with the
class.

Modifications: ​For the students who aren’t unable to complete this task/assignment, there will
be a simpler form. This task includes water colors, color mixing, as well as Modigliani’s
techniques, the students will simply create a picture of their favorite memory. The student will
assure to include bright and dark colors (color pencils or crayons) in replacement of the water
color.
