Put That Record

It’s hard to believe I’m reviewing a Hinder album.
After all, everyone expected them to be a one-hit-
wonder with their catchy 2005 single “Get Stoned.”
However, while everyone was busy waiting for the
next Jay-Z album, Hinder has been putting out quality
work on a regular basis. Their debut album, “Extreme
Behavior” went platinum after numerous scathing
reviews. Their next album, “Take it to the Limit” went
gold as well.
Time will only tell whether their newest album “All
American Nightmare” will live up to its predecessors’
success.
“Nightmare” is clearly a homage to the Reagan years,
when bands like Guns N’ Roses (who are even cited in
one of the songs) and Warrant ruled the rock scene. It
shares the same unapologetic “Sex, Drugs and Rock
and Roll” tone that our parents (continued-- pg 8)

track. Each month will bring a different
genre of music to the table. This month
touches on pop, hip hop, and the ever
famous rap with articles about Nelly, Lil’
Wayne, Lady Gaga and more! As a twist, I
added an article about one of my favorite
bands, Hinder. Though it’s more Alterna-

under the influence before. What else would make her
so different? But when she admitted it on Lopez Tonight
in front of America, and says it started in High School
with the one and only Snoop Dogg?!? Now that’s a bit of
a shocker. According to Diaz, she and Snoop, 39, went
to Long Beach Polytechnic High School together. He
was a year up from her, but nonetheless sold her drugs.

Change It Up There is much more out there than the usual Pop, Rap and Rock’n’Roll.

n the music industry, there are now
over 20 different genres. It’s not just pop,
rock, jazz and hip hop. There’s different
kinds of blues and r&b, classic rock and
modern rock. When you go outside
the genres to the people who ac-
tually listen to them, there are
different groups. Some groups
listen to Grunge. Some listen
to Reggae. The point is, these
groups hardly interact when it
comes to their interests in
music. But why only stick
to the one? In my opinion,
people should be more open
to different music genres.
So many good things can
come from adding variety to
your musical interests. You dis-
cover things you never thought you’d like
and connect with more people. Music is a
world on its own. It’s up to us to open the
door to that world and its many cultures.
Growing up, people stick to what
they know. So when they listen to the
same radio station or cd’s all the time,
they tend to feel more for that genre of
music. But it’s good to see what else is out
there. You may find something new and
fun that isn’t the norm for you, but has a
good beat that you like. It’s simple. Every
now and then, try to change the station
for a whole car ride or buy a cd for a band
even if you have no idea who they are.

Listening to different music connects
you with more people because you have
something in common. Music taste is a big
part of being social. If you never like what
someone else is listening to, you probably
won’t like their thoughts and opinions ei-
ther. Always be open to someone
else’s choices. From my experience,
the best way to do this is ask a
friend if you can listen to their Ipod
with them and let them pick the
songs. They may try to pick songs
that you know, but along the way
you may learn new songs as well.
Music opens your eyes and
gives you a new appreciation for
different cultures and genres of
music. The world is full of differ-
ent feelings and idea’s on music.
What we listen to is completely
different from what is being listened to
on the other side of the world. Different
parts of the world have different ideas on
what’s popular.
I’m not saying that in order to make
more friends or have a more fulfilling life you
have to like every kind of music there is. But
I do think that we should all be more open to
different kinds of music. Because, like I said
before, you can connect with more people
and you might just find something you like.

make you feel a bit dirty inside.
Of course there’s no way to pay homage to just the
good parts of a genre, even one as simple as 80’s rock.
Like Guns N’ Roses’“Use Your Illusion,”“Nightmare”
has a few power ballads that stick out completely and
break up the flow of the album.
It also bears mentioning that “Sex, Drugs and Rock
and Roll” makes for a pretty shallow message in the
end. While the songwriting is surprisingly clever the
songs are still mostly about getting drunk and doing
something foolish. However, I think we’ve all been
there and can appreciate a little of the sentiment.
My one real complaint about this whole homage of
an album is that it doesn’t sound like a true homage.
new sound. Which begs the question, “Why not pull a
Spaghetti Incident?” For those of you not familiar with
Guns N’ Roses, “The Spaghetti Incident” was a cover
album they did of songs from bands that influenced
them, mostly from the emerging LA punk scene.
I believe the best homage to their influences would
be to have made “Nightmare” their own “The Spa-
ghetti Incident” instead of a blatant rip-off with some
more timely lyrics.
Still, every band can be accused of ripping off their
influences. It’s almost inevitable. All in all Hinder has
done a fine job on “All American Nightmare.” It’s no
“Appetite for Destruction” but it’s good if you like a
more traditional rock experience or if you want to get
your dad to stop playing Van Halen all day.

Who says you can only be number one for so long? Not Cornell
Haynes, better known as the rapper Nelly. Nelly hasn’t had a song in
a few years, at least not for himself anyways. But 2010 has revived
the musical flow into Nelly’s blood. To put it shortly, Nelly is back.
The song “Just a Dream” was releasedAugust 16 of 2010, and has
since then gotten into the minds of anyone who likes a good rap song
about love. The beat came around by accident. Jim Jonson, a record
producer, was going through beats with Nelly for his latest album
when the beat to just a dream came through. Cornell says that “He
was playing me a few of his beats and he playd that beat, but he kind
of moved on to the [next] beat pretty quick.”
In just its eighth week, “Just a Dream” was number twelve w a s m a d e i n 2 0 0 0 . H i s l a s t a l b u m b e -

After nearly eight months at Rikers
Island, “Weezy” is free. The 28 year
old rapper Lil’ Wayne, born Dwayne
Carter Jr., was sentenced to one year
of prison after he confessed in March
of 2009 to having a loaded gun on
his tour bus. The charges were origi-
nally from 2007, when the gun was
found by an NYPD official. Wayne
denied the alligations until finally
breaking down in March. Wayne was
expecting his third child from wife
and rapper Nivea. Waiting for him
outside Rikers was his mother, Jacita
Carter, and co-CEO of Cash Money
Records Bryan (Birdman) Williams.

As Lil’ Wayne tasted the fresh air, his
first plan: a party celebrating his new-
found freedom. But not before twit-
tering to all his fans that “he’s back.”
Unfortunately, Wayne now has a few
drug possession charges to tend to
from 2008 that come with an unsuper-
vised probation term for 36 months.
We all knew Wayne would have raps
ready for us when he got out, and his
album I Am Not A Human Being is
out now and can be bought in stores.
