THEORY
Computational Fluid Dynamics has progressed rapidly in the past fifty years. It has been
used in many industrial fields and plays an irreplaceable role in engineering design and scientific research.
However, due to the existence of free surface and complex ship geometry. Ship CFD has fallen behind its
counterparts in other industrial fields. But with the recent breakthrough in ship CFD technology, practical
applications of CFD in analyzing and predicting ship performance now become possible. In this paper, we shall
present some of our recent study in the numerical simulation of wake wave pattern and the resistance of a surface
ship. Some progress on the wake simulation of a fully appended ship is also discussed. Through our work, the
huge potential of CFD application in ship hydrodynamics performance prediction is demonstrated.

3D model and Meshing:
The 3 Dimentional model of the vessel is generated in the Rhino 3D and model is imported in the
STAR CCM+ to create mesh.

Domain creation
A Virtual towing tank is created as Domain, which includes the symmetrical part of the scaled
model’s surface in the symmetrical side of the virtual towing tank. The Virtual towing tank has
four parts namely: Top, Bottom, Inlet, Outlet, Side and Symmetry. The Domain’s dimensions are
given with respect to the dimensions of towing tank in which the test undergoes with the model.

Domain for the simulation

Simulation running and Visualization of
results:
After setting up the physical conditions, the simulation of model in the domain is started. After a
certain period of time, the simulation was finished and various plots and scenes were obtained.
The following images are the results obtained after the simulation of model.

The following screenshot shows a close-up of the free water surface around the ship hull on the
symmetry plane at the end of the simulation:
