Getting started
Using your RVA 4800 together with the supplied software, you
can configure and perform a wide variety of tests, graph data
and analyze test results. Standardized test profiles are
available, including those approved by the American
Association of Cereal Chemists International (AACCI) and the
International Association for Cereal Science and Technology
(ICC).
Use your RVA 4800 only for its intended purpose. Improper
!
use may impair safety protections provided by the unit.
Warning—high pressure
To test samples using your RVA 4800, you will require the
following equipment and materials:

1 Unpack your RVA 4800 and check all items against the
packing list provided with the unit.
When installing your RVA 4800, ensure the power cord and
mains switch are always accessible.
Notes
You can also connect your RVA 4800 to your computer using
the nine-pin serial port and a standard RS-232 serial cable.
3 Hold the tool with one hand and turn the paddle
coupling clockwise (viewed from above). Remove
the paddle coupling.
If the water pressure is less than 250 kPa, do not fit the water
pressure regulator supplied.
To install the tubing into a fitting, simply push it in. To remove it,
first push in the collar before pulling the tubing out of the fitting.
To install TCW
The language in which TCW will run will depend on your Windows Regional and Language
Options at the time of installation. These options are accessible through Control Panel in
Windows. French, German or Spanish language support will apply when the Windows Regional
and Language Option is set to any relevant subculture for the given language (e.g. Spanish
(Mexico)). Swedish or Chinese language support will only apply when the option is set to
‘Swedish’ or ‘Chinese (PRC)’, respectively.
If these are not already installed on your computer, they will be installed during the TCW
installation routine. You can also use Windows Update to check for any critical updates to the
.NET Framework or download the latest version from microsoft.com/downloads.
Once you have installed TCW and connected your RVA 4800, you can run TCW and establish
communications between TCW and your RVA 4800. If communication is established
automatically, the name of your RVA 4800 should be displayed along with the message
Available on the TCW status bar.
The InstallShield Wizard for TCW3 will install a USB driver and allocate a COM port to run
your RVA 4800. You can use the Ports line in Device Manager to view which port has been
allocated to this connection. To launch Device Manager, click the Windows Start button and
click Run, type devmgmt.msc and click OK. Alternatively, open the Windows Control Panel,
click the System icon, select the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button.
If the serial port of your computer cannot be found, the status of your RVA 4800 will be
displayed in TCW as Unavailable. If the serial port is working but your computer fails to
establish communication with your RVA 4800, its status will be displayed in TCW as No RVA. If
either of these conditions occurs, check that your RVA 4800 is connected and switched on, and
that the correct communications port has been set by selecting Settings > Communication
Port from the menu.
Automatic zeroing
Some materials have very low viscosity at the beginning
of a test, such as starch mixed with water prior to
gelatinization. Since this low viscosity (typically 1 cP) is
close to zero, your RVA 4800 can be zeroed
automatically while the test is in progress.

The Run menu in TCW enables you to create, edit, copy and
save test configurations to define each test (see Managing test
configurations on page 20), and to select and run a test
configuration to perform a test and collect data (see Selecting a
test on page 23).
Projects
A project is used by TCW to display and analyze the data of
one or more tests (see Viewing test results on page 33). It
includes:
• the raw data for each test
• analyses to be applied to the test data
• settings for displaying the test data in TCW.

Notes
The default location for program files may differ from that
shown above on non-English versions of Windows.
When moving your RVA 4800, use the shipping boxes in which
the unit was supplied to you to protect the instrument in transit.
The use of other packing materials may result in damage.
Before shipping your RVA 4800 for service, drain any water
from the cooling tubes, since freezing of this water during transit
may cause damage.
3 Blow air through the inlet tube until all water has been
drained.
Calibration
Perten Instruments recommends that the calibration of your
RVA 4800 be checked at least once per month. A calibration
check involves running your RVA 4800 with a calibration profile
and a sample of known viscosity, such as a standard oil or
starch. A Calibration Checking Kit is available from your Perten
Instruments representative.
WARNING
Replacing a fuse
If your RVA 4800 loses power, check that the power cable
is properly connected, that the unit is switched on and that
the power source is operating properly. If the problem
persists, you may need to change the anti-surge fuse,
located adjacent to the power inlet.

Additional information
If the sample and water weight are not fixed, the formulae for
calculating the corrected sample and water weight are:
s 0 (100 − m0 )
s1 =
(100 − m1 )
w 1 = w 0 + s 0 − s1
where
s1 = corrected sample weight (g)
w1 = corrected water weight (g)
m1 = actual moisture content of sample (%)
s0 = standard sample weight (typically 3.5–4.0 g)
w0 = standard water weight (typically 25 g)
m0 = reference moisture content of sample (typically 11 or 14%).
s 0w 0 (100 − m0 )
s1 = .
w 0 (100 − m1 ) + s 0 (m0 − m1 )
w 0 (100 − m1 ) + s 0 (m0 − m1 )
w1 = .
100 − m0
