If using a USB cable, switch off your RVA 4800 or disconnect

the cable before installing TCW (see Installing TCW on
page 12).

8 RVA 4800—Installation and Operation Manual

Changing test mode
Your RVA 4800 can be configured for one of two test
modes—standard testing or high temperature testing.
High temperatures are those exceeding 100°C. To carry
out a high temperature test, you must use a special high
temperature can and paddle (shown). Before using a high
temperature can and paddle, a high temperature paddle
coupling must be installed on your RVA and the bobbin
used to support the sample can must be lowered.

Changing the paddle coupling

standard high temperature
Your RVA 4800 is supplied with two paddle couplings—a
standard paddle coupling used for temperature tests up
to 100°C, and a high temperature paddle coupling used
for high temperature tests. If the temperatures used by
your test configuration exceed 100°C, you must install the
high temperature paddle coupling on your RVA.
Otherwise, you can install the standard paddle coupling.

standard high temperature

 To change the paddle coupling

1 If changing from a standard to high temperature

coupling, move the high temperature safety switch
into the back position.

2 Insert the short end of the paddle coupling and

bobbin tool into the screw on the current paddle
coupling.

3 Hold the tool with one hand and turn the paddle
coupling clockwise (viewed from above). Remove
the paddle coupling.

4 Position the high new paddle coupling and screw.

Hold the tool with one hand and turn the paddle
coupling counterclockwise (viewed from above).
Do not overtighten.
5 If you have installed the high temperature coupling,
pull the high temperature safety switch forward, as
shown.
6 Zero your instrument (see Zeroing your RVA 4800
on page 14).

RVA 4800—Installation and Operation Manual 9

Notes

When you install the high temperature paddle, ensure the

safety switch is in the forward position. Otherwise your
RVA will be unable to heat samples beyond 100°C. The
switch is also used to record which paddle coupling was
used in all test results.

Standard paddles and cans can only be used with the

standard paddle coupling.

See Preparing a sample on page 25 for details on using

the high temperature paddles and cans.

Tests carried out using a sealed high temperature can or

using a high temperature paddle will be qualitatively
similar but not identical to standard tests carried out using
a standard can and paddle. Such test results should not
be directly compared.

Lowering and raising the bobbin

The bobbin on your RVA 4800 is used to support the
sample can. When conducting a standard test, the bobbin
begins in a raised position and lowers automatically when
you lower the tower. To conduct a high temperature test,
you must first lower the bobbin manually.

 To lower the bobbin

1 Insert the long end of the paddle coupling and

bobbin tool into the screw on the bobbin, as
shown.
2 Using the tool, turn the tool counterclockwise to
unlock the bobbin while pushing down.

3 When the bobbin reaches its bottom position, turn

the tool clockwise to lock the bobbin into place.

 To raise the bobbin

1 Insert the long end of the paddle coupling and

bobbin tool into the screw on the bobbin.
2 Turn the tool counterclockwise to loosen the screw.

3 Allow the bobbin to rise to its normal up position. It

will automatically lock into place.

10 RVA 4800—Installation and Operation Manual

Water supply
The water supply is required to cool samples. For optimum
performance, the supply should be capable of delivering 1 L/min
at approximately 100–250 kPa. The water supplies of most
laboratories should be suitable.

If the water pressure is less than 250 kPa, do not fit the water
pressure regulator supplied.

The water supply may be non-potable, but should be free of

excess solutes and solids. Excess solutes may precipitate in the
water channels, causing blockages, while excess solids may
interfere with the valve.

The local water temperature should not exceed 25°C; otherwise,

performance may be affected. A chilled water bath is
recommended if the local water temperature exceeds 25°C, or if
the local water supply is otherwise unsuitable.

To install the tubing into a fitting, simply push it in. To remove it,
first push in the collar before pulling the tubing out of the fitting.

 To install the water pressure regulator

1 Fit one end of a length of tubing (1) to

the RVA water inlet and the other end
11
to the regulator outlet (3).

2 Fit one end of another length of tubing

9
to the RVA 4800 water outlet and
insert the other end into a drain. 10

3 Insert the strainer/washer (5) into the

regulator inlet (4). 9

4 Screw one end of the elbow tubing (6) 12

onto the regulator inlet (4). 2 7 8

5 Insert the washer (7) into the other 1

end of the elbow tubing (6) and screw 3

onto the tap (12) or hose-to-barb

adapter (8).

6 If installing on a tap with a barbed

hose tail fitting (11), connect the bar
adapter to the tap using the hose (10)
and hose clamps (9). 4
5
7 Check all connections for leaks. 6

Zeroing your RVA 4800
To improve accuracy, your RVA 4800 uses an offset to
adjust viscosity measurements. You can zero your
instrument to reset this offset. Perten Instruments
recommends that you zero your RVA 4800 at least daily,
or whenever the paddle coupling is changed.

Zeroing can be carried out automatically during a test or

manually prior to a test.

Automatic zeroing
Some materials have very low viscosity at the beginning
of a test, such as starch mixed with water prior to

24 RVA 4800—Installation and Operation Manual

Preparing a sample
Good sample preparation is essential for obtaining
consistent and accurate results from your RVA 4800.
Samples should be prepared in accordance with your
local operating procedure.

If your sample consists of whole grain, it should be milled

to a maximum particle size of 100% <0.50 mm and at
least 50% <0.21 mm. Flour and wholemeal do not require
any milling.

If you are using a Robot Dispenser, please follow the

procedure for sample preparation detailed in the manual
for this unit.

Where possible, the moisture content of the sample

should be measured to enable moisture correction. See
Moisture correction on page 82.

 To prepare a sample (standard test)

1 In accordance with your local operating procedure,

weigh and dispense the sample material and water
into a new can.

2 Use a non-stick stirrer to disperse the sample.

Alternatively, place a new paddle into the can and
jog the blade vigorously up and down through the
water 10 times. Ensure any sample lumps
adhering to the inside of the can are pushed down
into the water.

RVA 4800—Installation and Operation Manual 25

 To prepare a sample (high temperature test)

1 In accordance with your local operating procedure,

weigh and dispense the sample material and water
into a new can.
2 Use a non-stick stirrer to disperse the sample.
Ensure any sample lumps adhering to the inside of
the can are pushed down into the water.

3 Remove the collar from the high temperature lid

assembly.

4 Insert the can through the collar.

5 Insert the paddle into the paddle holder on the lid
assembly.

6 Place the lid assembly on the can.

7 Bring the lid assembly and collar together and

rotate the lid clockwise, as shown, to ensure a firm
seal is formed. Do not overtighten.

8 If required, place the prepared can into the

pressure vessel stand, as shown.

Notes

Do not dispense the sample material onto the water in

the can until you are ready to load the sample into your
RVA 4800.

When using the Robot Dispenser to prepare samples, the

water is dispensed on top of the sample material. Do not
use a paddle to disperse a sample prepared with the
Robot Dispenser as it is not long enough to dislodge
material from the bottom of the can. Instead use a non-
stick stirrer to disperse the sample. Please consult the
manual for your Robot Dispenser for further details.

If you are using one of the default test configurations

provided with your RVA, please consult the test notes
embedded in the test configuration for additional
information regarding sample preparation (see Test notes
on page 64).

safety release valve during the test.

See Setting up for high temperature testing on page 9 for

details on changing test mode.

Allow at least 30 minutes for your RVA 4800 to warm-up.

If the tower fails to latch down, the initial test temperature

may not have been reached. Check that the status lamp
is blinking green or check the state of your RVA 4800
using TCW before attempting to load a sample.

Failure to properly insert the paddle can cause it to rub or

jam during the test.

Failure to release the tower immediately when it latches

down can cause the paddle coupling to rub or jam during
the test.

When loading a high temperature sample, ensure the

handle is facing forward or slightly to your right (i.e. away
from the temperature safety switch) to ensure it does not
touch the temperature safety switch when the motor
tower is pushed down.

Copying analyses from another file
As well as editing the analyses directly, you can copy the
analyses from another test configuration, project or TCW2 .ANL
file into the currently open project.

 To copy the analyses from another file

1 On the Analyses tab of the Project Settings window,

click Import Analyses.

2 Select the file with the analyses you wish to copy.

3 Click Open. The analyses in the open project will be

replaced with those in the selected file.

Notes

If you already know the analysis formula you wish to enter, you
can type it directly.

You can combine any number of functions and standard

mathematical operations to define an analysis function.

When using values in an analysis formula, the default units for

that value must be used. The default units are as follows:

value default units abbreviation

time minutes (decimal) min
viscosity centipoise cP
speed revolutions per minute rpm
temperature degrees celcius °C

If your decimal symbol and list separator symbol are set to the
same character in Windows (such as the comma character “,”),
a warning message will be shown when you try to enter an
analysis formula. In this case, use the Regional and Language
Options in the Windows Control Panel to set the list separator
to a different character (such as the semicolon character “;”).

The # character can be used to include the value of the analysis

result in the label. For example, if the analysis result is 1660 cP
and the label is “Peak = #”, the graph will display the label
“Peak = 1660”.

Viscosity settings
For some RVA applications (e.g. whipped cream), it is
necessary to end a test as soon as the viscosity rises sharply
and passes a defined threshold value. For cream in particular,
this will prevent the sample from spilling out of the test can.

The Viscosity Settings tab includes the following settings:

• Viscosity threshold for stopping test. This enables you
to end a test early when a certain viscosity is reached
(see Stopping a test on viscosity value below).
• Viscosity limits. This enables you to set viscosity limits,
which can be displayed during a test and provide a
warning if the test viscosity falls outside these limits (see
Setting a warning on viscosity value below).

RVA 4800—Installation and Operation Manual 57

Stopping a test on viscosity value

 To end a test early when a certain viscosity is reached

1 Open the test configuration (see Opening test

configurations on page 20).

2 Select the Viscosity Settings tab and enter a time

before the viscosity is checked. The test will continue for
at least this amount of time, regardless of the test
viscosity.

3 Enter the viscosity limit. After the time limit has been
reached, TCW will continue to monitor the viscosity and
terminate the test if the viscosity exceeds this limit.

4 Select the General tab. Under Enable viscosity

settings, check the box labeled Stop test when
viscosity reaches threshold (see Enable viscosity
settings on page 48).

Setting a warning on viscosity value

 To set a warning when viscosity falls outside set limits

WARNING

Before cleaning, switch off your RVA 4800 and

unplug the power cord. Failure to do so may expose
you to an electric shock hazard.

If the casing or copper block of your RVA 4800 should

become soiled, unplug the unit and clean with a damp
cloth. Do not use abrasive pads or solvents such as
alcohol or benzene, as these may cause permanent
damage to your unit.

The copper block, especially the upper shoulder just

below the plastic stage, may become soiled if a sample
was not properly sealed, allowing sample material to
escape. To avoid this, always ensure samples are
properly sealed prior to each test.

The exterior casing may be polished with a good quality

household spray polish.

Moisture correction
For best results, sample and water weights should be corrected
for the sample moisture content, to give a constant dry weight-
to-water ratio. The typical moisture basis is 14% (as is). A
sample weight calculator is provided in TCW.

If the sample and water weight are not fixed, the formulae for
calculating the corrected sample and water weight are:

s 0 (100 − m0 )
s1 =
(100 − m1 )

w 1 = w 0 + s 0 − s1

where
s1 = corrected sample weight (g)
w1 = corrected water weight (g)
m1 = actual moisture content of sample (%)
s0 = standard sample weight (typically 3.5–4.0 g)
w0 = standard water weight (typically 25 g)
m0 = reference moisture content of sample (typically 11 or 14%).

If the water weight remains fixed, then the corrected sample

weight should be calculated using the formula:

s 0w 0 (100 − m0 )
s1 = .
w 0 (100 − m1 ) + s 0 (m0 − m1 )

Similarly, if the sample weight remains fixed, then the corrected

water weight should be calculated using the formula:

w 0 (100 − m1 ) + s 0 (m0 − m1 )
w1 = .
100 − m0
