INTRODUCTION

RATIONALE

Nowadays, students are considered as post-90 generations, which are classified as

the ‘human of digital age’ and been labelled as student of e-era too. They are millennial

or Generation Y onwards were born in the computer age, growing up in the age of the

Internet, using mobile devices every day. Many students use mobile devices both in their

free time and during class. It has the potential to be used for learning purposes as well as

for personal use. In other words, with the use of mobile devices, learners can learn

anywhere and at any time. The term mobile learning refers to learning with the aid of

mobile devices. From this definition, we can see that the mobile devices for M-learning

can cover a large scope, which includes laptops, mobile phones, netbooks, smartphones,

tablets and so on which has the function of wireless technology and portable. Accessing

to the internet is a significant feature of mobile devices today, especially mobile phones

that no longer just a phone but a portable multimedia device. Through a variety of mobile

devices wirelessly by using a series of wireless internet (Wi-Fi) or broadband services

without limit in terms of location or time, they will now collects more ideas and facts for

their studies. The rapid increase in computing power, memory capacity, screen size and

resolution also increases the potential of the devices.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents a summary of related literature whose results are considered

significant which served as a guide in attaining the purpose of this study.

LOCAL LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Educational tools like mobile devices are the tools of the teachers use to teach

their students. Good educational tools have a big impact on the students learning since

students learn most by doing. Engaging in hands – on activities especially in diverse

subjects gives the students idea on how their knowledge can be applied in real life

situation. Through this, teacher will be able to make his strategies in teaching more

effective and meaningful. It is much easier also for students to learn and understand their

lesson as well as acquire the skills necessary in the field if they use mobile device.

Further, the adequacies of mobile devices that will support the students’ effective

learning also have its own demand in the educational system (Albarico, et al. (2014)

From our former president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino announced publicly and

officially about the importance of the use of mobile device like Tablet, computer, mobile

phones as educational tools in both public and private schools during the inauguration of

the K – 12 Curriculum in our country (Enterprise Innovation, 2012).

9
Works by Xinhua (2014) Filipinos are using their mobile device not only for

communication but also for other purposes. According to a recent market study issued

TNS, a global authorized research company, said in its report that Filipino consumers are

not just using mobile device especially mobile phones for texting messages and sending

photos, but also as a means to have “internet – on – the – go”, allowing users to be

always online. Study conducted from November 2012 to January 2013 “Based on the

findings of the study, the increase in various mobile activities explain the growing trend

of Wi-Fi accessibility in public areas” said TNS Philippine Managing Director Gary de

Ocampo.

Mobile phones are important in school and also in work; it is the way of

interacting, creating, sharing and exchanging information and ideas to each other.

However, despite the numerous advantages of mobile phones, everything should be taken

in moderation. (Blumstock & Eagle, 2010).

Smart phones are cellular phones that perform many of the functions of a

computer, typically having a touchscreen interface, Internet access, and an operating

system capable of running downloaded applications. These enabled smartphone owners

to go “mobile”, or to do work or personal online stuff on-the-go rather than on the office

10
or at home. The current mobile operating systems popular today are Android,iOS,and

Windows Phone among others. (Choong, 2015).

FOREIGN LITERATURE AND STUDIES

In the study conducted by Warshaucer (2011) mobile device is useful in student’s

work wherein they can easily bring the devices everywhere to gather data or information.

The role of media and technology in education is quite obvious in today’s

educational setting. However media comes in many different forms such as internet,

television, radio and books, all of this media have affected the way student learn. Around

the world, students are beinf globally connected with one another through internet (Rolls,

2007).

According to Maslow, development toward self – actualization involved

satisfaction of hierarchy of human needs. These regard to the demand for self – esteem of

a person. Because every individual need a conducive tool that support to their learning to

gain more ideas that is needed on their work. The consistency of knowledge,

independence, and getting near to global audience.

To studied on ‘Children, computer and powerful idea’. He understood the

importance of digital media and how it could be used to enable children to learn better

within a constructivist learning environment. He believed that in order for children to

assemble and modify their ideas, the traditional tools such as pencils, copies and texts

were in adequate. take control of the learning process.
