Concentration

This is the amount of solute dissolved in 1dm3 (1000cm3) of solution. Amount of solute may

be grams or moles.

Molar concentration (usually just called concentration) is the number of moles of solute in

1dm3 (1000cm3) of solution. Unit of molar concentration is moldm-3

Mass concentration is the mass of solute in 1dm3 (1000cm3) of solution. Unit of mass

concentration is gdm-3.

Calculation of concentration

2dm3 of solution, b) 0.25 moles of solute in 500cm3 of solution, c) 0.125 mols of solute in
25.00cm3 of solution.

a)      2dm3 of solution contains 3 moles of solute

1dm3 of solution contains 3/2 = 1.5 moles

Concentration of solution 1.5moldm-3

b)      500cm3 of solution contains 0.25mols of solute

1000cm3 of solution contains (0.25 x 1000)/ 500 = 0.50moldm-3

c)      25.00cm3 of solution contains 0.125 mol

Mass and molar concentration can be interconverted. This is done as simply as converting from
mass to moles and vice versa.

Convert the following concentrations (moldm-3) to mass concentrations (gdm-3).

a)      0.85 moldm-3 of NH4Cl    b)  1.35 moldm-3  of Na2SO4

a)      Molar mass NH4Cl  = 14 + (1x4) + 35.5 = 53.5

1 mol NH4Cl has a mass of 53.5g

0.85 mol NH4Cl  has a mass of 53.5 x 0.85 = 45.5g

Mass concentration of NH4Cl  = 45.5gdm-3

b)      Molar mass Na2SO4 = (23x2) + 32 + (16x4) = 142g

1 mol Na2SO4 has a mass of 142g

1.35  mol Na2SO4 has a mass of 142 x 1.35 = 191.7g

Mass concentration of Na2SO4 = 191.7gdm-3

Convert the following concentrations from mass concentrations (gdm-3)

to molar concentrations (moldm-3).

a)      12.6 gdm-3 of HNO3   b) 22.1 gdm-3 of Pb(NO3)2

a)      Molar mass HNO3 = 1 + 14 + (16x3) = 63g

63g is the mass of 1 mol of HNO3

12.6g is the mass of 12.6/63 = 0.2 mol of HNO3

Molar concentration of HNO3  = 0.2 moldm-3

b)      Molar mass Pb(NO3)2  = 207+ (14x2) + (16x6) = 331g

331g is the mass of 1 mol of Pb(NO3)2

22.1g is the mass of 22.1/331 = 0.07mol of Pb(NO3)2

AgapeChemistry 2020/21 CSEC

Molar concentration Pb(NO3)2 = 0.07 moldm-3

Try these, answers below.

1a)       What is the molar concentration of a solution of ammonium sulfate in which 1.32g of
solute is dissolved in 10cm3 of solution?

1b) What is the concentration in gdm-3 in which 0.75 mole of calcium chloride is dissolved in
250cm3 of solution.

Answers (there is more than one way to solve this problem)

1a)       Molar mass (NH4)2SO4 = (14x2) + (1x8) + 32 + (16x4) = 132g

132g is the mass of 1 mole of (NH4)2SO4

            1.32g is the mass of 1.32/132 =0.01mol

            10cm3 of solution contains 0.01mol

            1000cm3 of solution contains (0.01/10) x 1000 = 1moldm-3

1b)       Molar mass CaCl2 = 40 + (35.5 x 2) = 111g

            1 mol CaCl2 has a mass of 111g

            0.75 mol CaCl2 has a mass of 0.75 x111 = 83.25g

            250cm3 of solution contains 83.25g

            1000cm3 of solution contains (83.25 x 1000)/250 = 333g/dm³
