CERTIFICATES OF COMPLETION
The Center for Teaching Excellence in
partnership with other university offices offers
a selection of certificates of completions for
faculty, instructors and teaching graduate
students. Specific sessions for each certificate
of completion are color-coded on the next
page. Visit Certificates of Completion for more
information.
Carolina Online Learning & Teaching (COLT)
COLT is designed to provide the foundations
for teaching either in online, blended or hybrid
formats. The COLT program also builds
capacities in the areas of pedagogy, course
design, course development, distributed
delivery, and online course administration.
Fostering Proactive Learning Environments (FPLE)
The FPLE is designed to assist in understanding
today’s student and how to structure your class
to foster a sense of belonging, develop
proactive and reactive strategies for handling
academic misconduct, and practice how to
avoid and address classroom conflicts.
Integrative and Experiential Learning (IEL)
The IEL program is designed to explore ways to
help students reflect on and connect what they
do within and beyond their curriculum,
embrace multiple perspectives, and synthesize
and transfer their knowledge to new, complex
situations.
Mental Health and Well-being Competency
Program for Faculty
There has been an increase in students
experiencing mental health distress in college
and oftentimes, faculty are the first to observe
these behaviors. The Mental Health and
Well-being Competency Program for Faculty
certificate program addresses the growing
need of faculty preparedness in responding to
this new challenge.
Online International Programming
In this series of workshops, you’ll learn how
you can develop an Online International
Program (previously referred to as Study
Abroad courses) to enrich the global learning
experiences of your students—virtually! By
leveraging your international expertise and
interests, you can open the doors to a global
adventure for many students.
Teaching Towards Inclusive Excellence (TTIE)
The TTIE program is designed to provide an
opportunity for faculty, instructors and
graduate teaching assistants to strengthen
their strategic diversity leadership capacities
both within and outside their classroom and to
support UofSC’s commitment to inclusive
excellence.
GARNET APPLE AWARD FOR TEACHING
INNOVATION
Do you know a faculty member
who is highly creative and effective
in developing new course materials,
classroom methods or pedagogical
approaches? Nominate them for a Garnet
Apple Award! This university-wide award
honors faculty who exhibit best practices and
innovative teaching strategies in their courses.

MASTER CLASS SERIES
The Master Class Series is a seminar for
faculty members who would like to receive
specialized instruction on a specific
pedagogy discipline. The Series is led by a
“master instructor” with expertise related to
the selected topic. Each semester a new topic
is offered. The topic for the Spring 2021
Master Class is Metacognition: What it is and
Why We Need It.
This professional development opportunity
is limited to 16 faculty members and is held

PROGRAMS FOR GRADUATE TEACHING AND
INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANTS
Graduate teaching and instructional assistants
(GTA/IAs) are vital to undergraduate education at
UofSC. CTE offers a series of orientations and
professional development sessions each year,
leading to a higher level of pedagogical knowledge
and effectiveness. These include:
GTA/IA Orientation
All graduate students who will be newly appointed
Graduate Teaching or Instructional Assistants (GTA/
IAs) are required to participate in the university-wide
TA Orientation (TAO) prior to teaching their first
semester. GTA/IA Orientation is an important part of
the University’s Graduate TA/IA Training Program and
helps ensure success as a TA at UofSC.
GRAD 701
An integral part of the Graduate School’s GTA/IA
Training Program is participation in GRAD 701, the
Teaching Assistant Development course. GRAD 701
supports the teaching skill development of graduate
students through training sessions and workshops
directly applicable to TA/IA responsibilities.
Preparing Future Faculty (PFF)
The Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) program is a
professional development opportunity that provides
assistance to graduate students and post-docs who
want to become faculty members at the college
level. PFF is a national program. Graduate students
and post-docs interested in the PFF Program must
submit an application and statement of interest,
preferably early in their degree program or tenure
here at UofSC, and complete a selection of
academically-related activities to fulfill the program
requirement.
