Abstract

This data collected from the following research shows where a participant ranks in

various developmental areas. Observations were made to dissect where exactly a person is

compared to standard rankings. Normal individuals of a certain age rank at a standard unique to

age and school grade. Data is to be collected to support these observations.

Date shows standards of an average child and qualities they exhibit during that age.

Below or above a standard does not defy who a child is. Comparisons are only to be made to

track where a student may have to improve. Improvements are to be made in order to aid a

students success in and outside of school.

Method

Participants

Rosa Sanchez is the participant. Rosa is of the age of 18 years. Rosa is of the female

gender. She is attending high school in the Las Vegas valley, and is currently in the 12th grade.

Family member of Jacob R. Gonzales. She lives with both parents and her 3 siblings. Rosa is of

the Hispanic origin. Spanish is mainly spoken at home, but she is fluent in English and Spanish.

Parents are both born in Mexico. She is originally from South Gate, California. Rosa has been

living in Las Vegas for 16 years. Rosa works a full time job and is a licensed driver. Accepted to

the College of Southern Nevada, and plans on attending Fall 2021.Since the acceptance to the

College of Southern Nevada she is now the first person in her family to go to college. Both

parents do not graduate high school. After the completion of her senior year, Rosa and her

siblings are going to be the first generation in the family to graduate high school.

Physical

Rosa is physically average compared to standards for a 18 year old. Rosa gets on average

8 hours of sleep a night. “Young adults need about 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night,” (Gavin 1).

Rosa is engaged in physical activity everyday of the week besides Sunday. 60-90 minutes of

activity is indulged by Rosa everyday. “The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

recommends that children and adolescents participate in at least 60 minutes of vigorous or

moderate-intensity physical activity each day,”(Burgert 1). Rosa has been on a menstrual cycle

these past years. Normal once a month cycle is occurring to Rosa. “By this age range, questions

about your daughter’s sexual maturation will be explored using a Sexually Maturation Rate

(SMR) scale and, if sexually active, your provider may check for signs of sexually transmitted

infections (STIs), also performing pelvic exam, if warranted,” (Spitzer 1).

Emotional

Rosa is emotionally average compared to standards for a 18 year old. Rosa is aware of

what type of stress she is experiencing. Rosa is employed and has encountered physical stress

and mental stress. “Despite these symptoms of stress, teens are far less likely than adults to make

the connection between physical and mental health and stress,” (Emmons 1). Rosa has plans on

furthering her education and going to college. Rosa is aware of who she wants to be and what

she has to do in order to become that. Plans to move out and buy property. Currently in a 4 year

relationship, Rosa is connected to her emotional side. “By 18, it's common for young adults to:

develop a sense of self, value individual relationships over peer groups, become more

independent from parents, think abstractly to solve problems, have long-term plans for the

future,” (Gavin 1). Rosa being the age she is, she still has tendencies of those in her age group.

Maturity displays a behavior that she needs to adapt to. Though maturity level is not of an older

adult, she is still average. “Older teens may seem mature at times, but they often will still have

periods of childish behaviour,” (Susan 1).

Philosophical

Rosa is average philosophically compared to standards of an 18 year old. Rosa is able to

think with an open mind and be understanding. Her way of thinking is not just influenced by her

parents. Her way of thinking is influenced by being aware of herself. “By age 18, teens exhibit a

lot of adult-like thinking (even though their brains are yet done developing),” (Morin 1). Rosa is

not a part of any active religion at the moment. She is not influenced by a church or religion.

Being in a committed 4 year relationship has shaped her perspective of searching for love.

“Teens learn about themselves through expanding their relationships beyond close same-sex

friendships and through finding out about different world views and lifestyles,” (Susan 1). Music

influences Rosa within her everyday life. The way she wears her clothing and accessories is

influenced by the music she listens to. Though she is influenced by music she is still open to

change and pursuing other interests. “Children continue to pursue areas of interest, including art,

music, exercise, and community service,” (Gavin 1).

Social

Rosa is average socially compared to standards of an 18 year old. Rosa is a fairly social

person. She will socialize with other students but not during class. Spends most of her time with

her boyfriend that attends the same school as her. “Other people's beliefs and actions can have a

significant impact on our own behaviour. A large body of work has shown that people change

their behaviour in order to fit in with others,” (Adolesc 1). Rosa works 5 days out of the week.

Rosa has a focus on school and work in order to finish her senior year. As of right now Rosa

does not prioritize social life but it is a factor she does care about. “Peer groups have less of a

pull on 18-year-olds,” (Morin 1). Rosa is in a committed relationship and plans to have a future

with her partner. “For example, almost one in two girls were reported to be married or in a union

before reaching 18 years of age,” (Webb 1).

Intellectual

Rosa is average intellectually compared to standards of an 18 year old. She has the ability

to think and reason. Rosa is able to figure out and solve problems using her way of thinking.

“Cognitive development means the growth of a child’s ability to think and reason. This growth

happens differently from ages 6 to 12, and from ages 12 to 18,” (Alder 1). Rosa is able to

manifest what she desires and obtain them. She uses her resources such as a job to fund any

desires she wants to work toward. Rosa has the ability to recognize her resources and how to

utilize them to her benefit. “According to the most widely used definition of mental retardation,

it is characterized by three criteria: significantly subaverage intellectual functioning; concurrent

and related limitations in two or more adaptive skill areas; and manifestation before age

eighteen,” (Baroff 1). Rosa has grades to match her standards. Rosa is able to get all of her

school work done while working full time. She gets her work done on time and is able to receive

a good grade based on her work. “An 18-year-old must be able to manage his assignments,

workload, and deadlines,” (Lyncoth 1).

Recommendations

Parents should monitor how much sleep their child gets a night. Students need 8 hours of

sleep a night. Children should be consuming a total of 3 meals per day. Socializing and

communicating with others should be an aspect within a child's life. Emotions should be able to

be expressed from each student. Parents need to support their child throughout schooling and

outside. Being understanding to a child while he or she figures out who they are can aid to a

student's success. Many students need support in order to be successful. Parents can be that

source of support outside of school. Parents need to do their part at home in order for their child

to be successful in the classroom. Despite the age of 18 and being considered an adult, students

living at home with parents still need support. Young adulthood is a transition that takes time and

patience. Patience is needed by both the parents and the students. Parents that care about their

students' success will do the steps at home in order for their child to be successful in the

classroom.

Results

Evidence shows that Rosa is an average 18 year old. She exhibits traits average for the

age that she is. Though maturity is displayed at a less of a level at times, she is still an average 18

year old. Socially she needs to improve but is content for the time being until the end of senior

year. Rosa can improve by gaining more friends and spending quality time with other people

besides her partner. Her plans for the future seem obtainable with the resources she has.

Manifestation upon her desires can aid to the critical thinking needed for her to be successful.

Her plans for the future show that she is maturing and becoming a young adult. Rosa is not part

of a religion and does not have plans on joining one anytime soon. With plans of marrying her

partner and her acceptance to college, Rosa seems to be on track to having a prosperous life.
