To make room on Seattle’s Major League, 40-man, roster, outfielder Phillip Ervin was designated for assignment.
After today’s roster moves, Seattle’s Major League, 40-man, roster remains full at 40 players.
Middleton, 27, appeared in 13 games with the Angels during the 2020 season, going 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA (7 ER, 12.0 IP)
with 6 walks and 11 strikeouts. He has seen limited action since the start of 2018 season after undergoing Tommy John
Surgery performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache on May 22, 2018. He spent the majority of the 2019 season on the Injured List
recovering from the procedure, before making his first appearance on Aug. 28 vs. Texas. In 2020, Middleton’s fastball
averaged 97.1 mph, while topping out at 99.6 mph. His 97.1 mph average fastball velocity was his highest in any season of
his 4-year Major League career.
Middleton is a life-long resident of the Pacific Northwest. He was born in Portland, OR and went on to play high school
baseball at Milwaukie High School, just south of Portland. He played college baseball at Lane Community College in
Eugene, OR, where he also played basketball, averaging 11 points and 4.6 rebounds per game as a shooting guard.
“I’m happy to come back home to the Pacific Northwest and play for the home team,” Middleton said.
Middleton was originally selected by the Angels in the third round of the of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Lane
Community College. He made his Major League debut with the Angels on May 5, 2017 vs. Houston. Overall, he has
appeared in parts of 4 Major League seasons with the Angels (2017-20), going 6-2 with a 3.48 ERA (37 ER, 95.2 IP) with
40 walks and 96 strikeouts.
Ervin, 28, was claimed off waivers from Cincinnati on Sept. 3 after being designated for assignment on Aug. 28. With the
Mariners, he hit .205 (8x39) with 5 runs, 3 doubles, 4 RBI and 8 walks in 18 games. Overall, the 5-foot-10, 207-pound
outfielder hit .149 (11x74) with 10 runs, 1 HBP, 14 walks and 1 stolen base in 37 games between Cincinnati (19 G) and
Seattle (18 G) during the 2020 season.
Ervin was originally selected by the Reds with the 27th overall pick in the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Samford
(AL) University. He made his Major League debut with the Reds on April 22, 2017 vs. the Chicago Cubs. In parts of four
Major League seasons with the Reds (2017-20) and Mariners (2020), Ervin has hit .247 (145x586) with 75 runs scored, 26
doubles, 8 triples, 17 home runs, 68 RBI, 56 walks and 15 stolen bases in 237 career games. He has appeared defensively
at all three outfield positions throughout his Major League career: left field (115 G, 66 GS), right field (74 G, 42 GS) and
center field (45 G, 31 GS).
