Growth Mindset Plan Revisited

I wrote my original growth mindset plan in October of 2020 for one of my grad school courses at Lamar
University. It is now December of 2020 and I am going to go back and reflect/ revisit this plan to see if things
have changed/ improved and did I actually follow through with my plan. Throughout this revisit you will see
excerpts from my original plan and my reflections.

I started off talking about reading Carol Dweck’s book and how I think of myself as a positive person.
Not too much has changed, I am still very positive in my day to day life and try to embrace new challenges as
opportunities for growth. I sometimes experience fixed mindsets, but now I am able to recognize them and try
to change my feelings toward that challenge.

My definition of a growth mindset hasn't

changed since October, I still think the power of
yet is great. Keeping the end in mind has a little
more context for me since I created the
Understanding by Design and the Learning
Outcomes 3 column design templates for a
genetics unit that I recently taught in the fall
semester of 2020. Both of these assignments
required me to think about what i wanted my
students to achieve through their learning and it
really challenged me to think both about the board
picture and the day to day. Talk about a complete
brain shift.

The reasons for using a growth mindset are still relevant and powerful. I highly recommend watching
this TED ED video of Carol Dweck talking about how she implemented her growth mindset in school and the
results. I challenge you to think about how you are affecting your students' mindsets by how you speak to them
in a daily basis.

In my plan I reference the 4 steps that Carol

Dweck outlined in her book Mindset. I’m not
sure if I have successfully implemented all of
the steps in my life but I have made an effort.
Some days I am a growth mindset rockstar
and some days it is a really struggle. You
could say I haven’t mastered it YET! I then
went on to talk about how I was introduced to
the growth mindset and how I used to do a
growth mindset escape room on the first day of
school. That hasn't changed since my first plan
I wrote in October of this year.

I still have those Harry Potter posters

somewhere, maybe in a cabinet. I was not
someone who went into a growth mindset
craze after doing this assignment back in
October. I didn’t put up any posters to remind myself of the power of yet. Mostly because I like to use my
walls to display anchor charts and student work from different Argument driven inquiries or investigations we
have done during the semester.

The last sections of my plan is a

list of resources that I wanted to read/
watch to better help me in my adoption of
a growth mindset. In all honesty I haven't
read or watched any of these resources.
School became busy and I just never got
around to pulling up the list of resources
and spending time to go through them. I
have watched all the Carol Dweck Ted talk
videos that Dr. Harapnuik posts for us to
watch as part of the Lamar University DLL
program.
