4. Rubrics

Holistic rubric will be used for assessing the student’s comprehension. Holistic rubric was
specifically used for this end of unit assessment in lieu of analytic rubric as the former would
provide feedback on what the child is able to demonstrate, rather than what s/he cannot
do. Thus this assessment shall only test and score what the students can do rather than
individually providing scores on each criterion. In this regard, holistic rubrics contain broad
objectives and list evaluation scores, each with an overall criterion summary that
encompasses multiple skills.

Grade Criteria
A (8-10) The A composition is exceptional in every way. It is well organized, has effective language
(cohesive devices) and is engaging. Content is thorough and lacking in no area. There are no
Exceeds
(or few) minor errors in grammar, vocabulary or tense form.
Criteria
B (6-7) The B composition is good and quite organized and is still entirely acceptable. Majority of the
essay is clear and engaging but there may be a few areas which require further development.
Meets
Though there might be some errors in grammar, vocabulary and tense form, these errors are not
criteria egregious enough to detract from the overall point being made.

C (4-5) The C composition is adequate in most areas, but exceptional in none. Organization may be a
slight problem but can be fixed and less engaging. The essay is unclear and requires further
