Making Art During a Pandemic

Academy for Global Studies

I. Introduction

My internship will be covering 2 different subjects, education and business, and

exploring both separately. First with the education side, I plan on learning about

everything that goes on behind the scenes. As students we only see the lessons that

teachers give us and spend 3-5 hours with them a week. Teachers, however, spend their

entire week creating well thought out lessons, grading papers, seeking out materials, and

making time for friends and family. I will be getting a look at how these tasks are done.

What works and what doesn’t? How much time does each lesson take to plan?

Right now especially, teachers are having to put in way more time to convert all their

lessons to an online format. On top of that, they're having to risk their job or their life by

either returning to school or staying home. Students have a general agreement that

returning to in-person school is not a good idea, but the district seems to have other

thoughts. In this internship I will be learning what those thoughts are, what motivates

them, how they’re getting people to return, and when they expect to return to normal.

The second part of the internship is helping renew a small business. Online presence is

essential to getting your business seen by potential buyers. Because of this, I will be

redesigning a website and helping get a social media following. On top of this I will be

discovering how you make time for running a small business when you have a full time

job and a family to take care of.

II. Purpose/Rationale

The career I want in the future is a research scientist and I know that the easiest way to be

a researcher is to work at a university and be a professor. This internship will give me a

small look at what happens behind the scenes to keep learning fun and easy for students.

Because I know Mrs.Burnham, this will be a good first internship because

communication will be easier and I will be more open to criticism.

As for the small business side, creating and selling a product would be a nice way to

make a little money when I’m in college. Learning how to advertise your product online

would be helpful to know before starting my own business. Especially right now

supporting small businesses is really important, and knowing more about the business

process would help with advocating for local family owned shops and encouraging

friends and family to shop at them.

III. Learning Objectives

● Learn to write in a more professional manner

● Understand the education process

○ Creating assignments/ lessons

○ Conveying a topic in an understandable way

● Learn the values of our (AISD, Texas, U.S.) education system

● Learn how to manage a small business

● Discover how politics/ modern issues affect education

IV. Expected outcome(s)

This internship will most likely be an educational experience with two different focus

points. For the education side of the internship, my goals are to learn how to be a good
educator and what is valued in the education system since I will most likely be teaching

at some point in my life. I would like to learn about what happens outside of school hours

to prepare lessons and how to keep students engaged. For the small business side of the

internship, I plan on rebuilding a website to showcase and sell products. This will be

documented by approved hours, progress on the website, and notes about what the owner

wants and doesn't want on the website.

VI. Academy Pillars

Recognize Perspectives: Right now people are divided about whether or not to send

people back to school so this pillar would be viewing the perspective of a teacher (since I

know the student perspective)

Communicate Ideas: I will be helping Mrs.Burnham get an online shop set up that

showcases her art and her talents.

Investigate the World: For this pillar I would look into either art history of art in different

cultures, possibly creating a lesson or assignment for her students.

VII. Anticipated Challenges

One challenge I anticipate is getting enough hours because getting the full

required hours while completing school work and having a social life in only 3

months seems like a difficult task. Having a weekly or monthly schedule will help

with this so I can set aside time to get my hours. The next challenge would be that

my internship will probably be mostly online. I already spend way too many

hours on my phone or computer and I don’t want to increase my screen time. For

this challenge, I will do all tasks that I can safely do in person. If that is not
possibly, maybe just take the computer outside. The final challenge would be

finding meeting times. I know Mrs.Burnham only works on A days but since my

internship class is on B days I would be taking time from her days off. Working

this into both of our schedules will be an interesting task that I’m sure teachers

and advisors will help me sort out.
