1. What are the basic hardware and software requirements to setup a

Windows Server?
Software: Windows Server 2008 Standard operating system;
either Windows Workflow Foundation Runtime Components and
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0,
web Web browsers for Server 2008 with Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Hardware: 2.5 gigahertz (GHz) or above for processor for

Windows Server 2008, 2 GB RAM minimum, NTFS file system–
formatted partition with a minimum of 3 GB of free space, DVD
drive, or a local or network-accessible drive to which you can copy
the entire contents of the Search Server installation CD, a higher or
1024 × 768 or higher resolution

2. What is virtualization?

3. What is Windows Server 2008?

Windows Server 2008 is one of Microsoft Windows' server line of
operating systems released in year 2008. Also known as Win2k8
Windows Server 2008 is built from the same code base as Windows
Vista; therefore, it shares much of the same architecture and
functionality. Since the code base is common, it automatically comes
with most of the technical, security, management and administrative
features new to Windows Vista such as the rewritten networking stack
(native IPv6, native wireless, speed and security improvements);
improved image-based installation, deployment and recovery;
improved diagnostics, monitoring, event logging and reporting tools;
new security features such as BitLocker and ASLR; improved Windows
Firewall with secure default configuration; .NET Framework 3.0
technologies; and the core kernel, memory and file system
improvements.

Processors and memory devices are modeled as Plug and Play

devices, to allow hot-plugging of these devices. This allows the system

resources to be partitioned dynamically using Dynamic Hardware

Partitioning; each partition has its own memory, processor and I/O host
bridge devices independent of other partitions.
4. Does Windows Server 2008 offer virtualization technology?

5. What is the difference between Windows Server 2008 Active Directory

and Windows Server 2003 Active Directory?
Active Directory roles are expanded with identity, certificate, and
rights management services in Server 2008. Active Directory, until
Windows Server 2003, allowed network administrators to centrally
manage connected computers, to set policies for groups of users, and
to centrally deploy new applications to multiple computers. This role of
Active Directory is being renamed as Active Directory Domain Services
(ADDS).
A number of other additional services are being introduced in Server
2008, including Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS), Active
Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS), (formerly Active
Directory Application Mode, or ADAM), Active Directory Certificate
Services (ADCS), and Active Directory Rights Management Services
(ADRMS). Identity and certificate services allow administrators to
manage user accounts and the digital certificates that allow them to
access certain services and systems.
Federation management services enable enterprises to share
credentials with trusted partners and customers, allowing a consultant
to use his company user name and password to log in on a client's
network. Identity Integration
Feature Pack is included as Active Directory Metadirectory Services.
Each of these services represents a server role.

6. Identify the benefits and functionality of installing Server Core?

Tute 5(BN206/MN506 System Management)

Windows Server 2008 includes a variation of installation called Server

Core. Server Core is a significantly scaled-back installation where no
Windows Explorer shell is installed. All configuration and maintenance
is done entirely through command line interface windows, or by
connecting to the machine remotely using Microsoft Management
Console. However, Notepad and some control panel applets, such as
Regional Settings, are available.
A Server Core machine can be configured for several basic roles:
Domain controller/Active Directory Domain Services, ADLDS (ADAM),
DNS Server, DHCP Server, file server, print server, Windows Media
Server, IIS 7 web server and Hyper-V virtual server. Server Core can
also be used to create a cluster with high availability using Failover
Clustering or Network Load Balancing.
The primary benefit is to reduce the attack surface of the operating
system, and about 70% of the security vulnerabilities in Microsoft
Windows from the prior five years would not have affected Server Core

7. You want to use a new server running Windows Server 2008 as a domain
controller in your Active Directory Domain. Which command do you use
to launch configuration of the domain controller?

8. Define the following:

a. Authentication
b. Domain
c. Forest
d. Forest root domain
e. Functional level
f. Global catalog

9. Describe the difference between a console saved in user mode and in author
mode?

Answer the multiple choice questions:

1. Which of the following are required to create a domain controller
successfully?(Choose all that apply)
Tute 5(BN206/MN506 System Management)
a. A valid DNS domain name
b. A valid NetBIOS name
c. A DHCP server to assign an IP address to the domain controller
d. A DNS server
2. ABC Research has recently acquired DEF, Inc. Because of regulatory issues
related to data replication, it is decided to configure a child domain in the
forest for DEF users and computers. The new domain will be created by
promoting a Windows Server 2008 domain controller, but you might need to
use existing Windows Server 2003 systems as domain controllers in the
DEF domain. Which functional levels will be appropriate to configure?
a. Windows Server 2008 forest functional level and Windows Server
2008 domain functional level for the DEF domain.
b. Windows Server 2008 forest functional level and Windows Server
2003 domain functional level for the DEF domain.
c. Windows Server 2003 forest functional level and Windows Server
2008 domain functional level for the DEF domain.
d. Windows Server 2003 forest functional level and Windows Server
2003 domain functional level for the DEF domain.
3. You are logged on as Administrator to Server01, one of four domain
controllers in the mitserver.com domain that run Server Core. You want to
demote the domain controller. Which of the following is required?
a. The local Administrator password.
b. The credentials for a user in the Domain Admins group.
c. The credentials for a user in the Domain Controllers group.
d. The address of a DNS server.

4. Server01 is running Server Core. It is already configured with the AD DS role.

You want to add Active Directory Certificate Services(AD CS) to the server.
What must you do?
a. Install the Active Directory Certificate Service role.
b. Install the Active Directory Federated Service role.
c. Install the AD RMS role.
d. Reinstall the server as Windows Server 2008(Full Installation).

5. You have been asked to create a new Active Directory forest for a new
research project at ABC Research. Because of the sensitive nature of the
project, you must ensure that the directory is as secure as possible. You are
considering the option of using a Server Core installation on two servers that
will act as domain controllers.
a. Can you create an Active Directory forest by using only Server Core
servers?
b. Which command will you use to configure IP address on the servers?
c. Which command will you use to add the DNS server role?
d. Which command will you use to add Active Directory Domain
service?
6. You are a support professional for Mitserver, Ltd. The domain’s administrator
have distributed a custom console with the Active Directory Users and
Computers snap-in. When you open the console and attempt to reset a user’s
password, you receive Access Denied errors. You are certain that you have
been delegated permission to reset passwords for users. What is the best
solution?
a. Close the custom console and open Server manager. Use the Active
Directory Users and computers snap-in in Server Manager.
b. Close the custom console and open a command prompt. Type dsa.msc.
c. Close the custom console and then right-click the console and choose
Run as Administrator. Type the cersentials for you secondary
administrative account.
d. Close the custom console and then right-click the console and open a
command prompt. Use the DSMOD USER command with the –p switch
to change the user’s password.
