MATH381 Probability and Statistics

Technical Assignment Fall 2020

Assignment Date: 18 November 2020 Due Date: 9 December 2020

Preparation:
This is to be done by teams of no more than 5.
All duplicated works will be categorically rejected.

• Go to the App store you have on your smart phone (whether iOS or Android).
• Look at the list of at least 20 Apps per team member from what you have on your phone(s). (e.g 5 members
must provide 5×20=100 different Apps.
• For each App you chose, observe and collect data about the following. You need to report the data on EXCEL™
sheet (look at the photo shown at the end of this assignment to know how the worksheet as an example)
1- R = The ratings of the App
2- C= The number of reviews in thousands (K means thousands)
3- M= The App download size in MB
4- D= The number of downloads in Millions (K means thousands and M means millions)

• When you complete the data do the following:

1- use EXCEL™ built in functions to compute the average (=AVERAGE(…)) and the standard deviation
(=STDEV(…)) of the App sizes M.
2- Since you obtained the average App size in (1) above, identify the number of all Apps you have on your
phone then calculate the estimated storage size for all your Apps.
3- The relative frequency of Apps that are rated under 3.5 (i.e. R < 3.5). (i.e. the count of Apps that are
rated below 3.5 to the total number of Apps you have). This will be considered as the probability that an
App is under-rated below 3.5.
4- Using the result in (3) above, find the mean number of reviewers of all the Apps in your sample that
would have provided a rating of below 3.5. (hint: first find the total number of reviewers of the Apps in
your sample (in Millions), then multiply that total by the probability that a reviewer provides a rate below
3.5).
5- Provide the probability that among all of the Apps you have in your phone, at least 5 are underrated
below 3.5
6- The average (=AVERAGE(…)) and the standard deviation (=STDEV(…)) of the number of downloads
of your sample Apps D.
7- Generate a scatter plot on EXCEL™ that shows the number of reviewers C in terms of the number of
downloads D. Can you say that there is relationship between C and D?
8- Generate a histogram for the downloaded App sizes M in your sample with 5 classes. (to do this is find
a video on YouTube® that guide you on how you can draw a histogram on EXCEL™)
9- Compute the following interval [L,U] related to the App size M where L = M ̅ − 1.96 (sM ⁄√𝑛) and
U=M ̅ + 1.96 (sM ⁄√𝑛), where M̅ is the average for M, sM is its standard deviation, and 𝑛 is your sample
size. Then, can you conclude that the smallest App size is 0.5 MB (or 500 KB)?
10- Write a short report of your answers then export it as PDF. Submit your PDF report and your EXCEL™
file to the link provided on the Moodle™ page of the course.
