Lesson 1 – Creating Your Own Rhythm

WEEK 1

W/I - "The Rhythm Machine." (5 minutes)

The   students will   sit in a circle. One person starts the Rhythm Machine by doing a simple rhythm that repeats
over and over.

It can start   with just a basic four-four   quarter note beat. The person sitting to the left of the starter then adds
their own rhythm to go along with the rhythms that are already going.

Again, the rhythm has to repeat and can not change. When everyone has added a rhythm, let the kids listen for a
few measures.

The first person will then stop doing their rhythm. Again listen for a second or two, and then the second person
drops out. It continues until the last person is the only rhythm.

I - Deepening (5 minutes)

The teacher will ask the students' insight about the opening activity. Did they like it?

The teacher will  allow   the realizations of the students to surface. Are they happy to contribute something
unique to the totality of the sound?

How do they feel creating their own rhythm? Is it better to create thant o imitate?

W - Discussion on Rhythm (15 minutes)

Future composer maybe in the classroom of Horizon International and Bilingual School. But in order to become a
successfull musician, one should be able to face the challenges of life squarely.

Then the teacher will review the musical elements like beat, rhythm, duration, and time signature.

In Music, in order to create a beautiful melody, one needs to know how to add the value of notes. Each note has
a value.

And the total of the values of notes per measure should be equivalent to the number on top of its time signature.

Then the teacher will present the table of values and show examples of how to create simple measures for two-
four, three-four, and four-four time signatures.

I - Board Activity (10 minutes)

The teacher will try to assess the understanding of the students by asking them one by one  to create their own
rhythmic pattern on the board, based on a given time signature.

W - Clapping Their Rhythms (5 minutes)

The class will then try to say aloud the patterns that have been written on the board.

WEEK 2

W - Clap, Clap, Clap (5 minutes)

The class starts with the teachehr inviting the students to clap the rhythmic pattern that he will be showing them
throuhg the active board.

I - Seatwork (10 minutes)

The students will be given a worksheet with 10 incomplete rhythmic patterns for the double, triple, and
quadruple time signature.

After collecting the paper, the class will try to answer the questions and give the different possible ways of
completing the measures according to given time signature.

G - Groupings and Practicce (20 minutes)

The class will then be divided into small groups, and each group will be given a board where they can write their
original rhythm based on the assigned time signature.

The group that gets the two-four time signature will havte to create 8 measures; three-four, 5 measures; and
four-four, 4 measures. Each measure must be different from the preceeding one.

The groups will be given 10 minutes to draw or write their pattern, which is later on to be displayed in the
classroom.

The other 10 minutes will be allotted for the groups to be able to practice clapping their pattern.

Performance Test (5 minutes)

The groups will now show to the class the rhythmic pattern that they have written and then each group will clap
and read their work.
Core Tactic – CREATING RHYTHM WITH CLAPPING AND WITH PERCUSSIONS
These activities aim to clearly show the students ability to create rhythm and play rhythmic  patterns. The sound
of their clap and their percussion instruments will reveal if they already  understandn  rhythm, beat and acccent.
It is also one way to assess if they are already able to recognize symbols used in linear methods pertaining to
rhythm.
