1) 1) What is the minimum number of state

variables? (10 pts)

f(t) 2) Give one possible combination of state

variables? (given the min. #) (10 pts)

3) Draw the FBD of each mass. (10 pts)

4) Write the state space equations. (20 pts)

pts)

6) Draw the signal flow graph. (20 pts)

7) Convert the system in a Transfer Function.

(30 points)

2) You are in MRT. Wondering about your future. Suddenly you feel a random tap on your shoulder. When you
turn to the source of the input signal on your shoulder, you see this gorgeous and beautiful female holding a
paper in her hand. She then speaks, “Sir, judging by your looks, I think you have great potential in becoming a
control systems engineer. Could you help me with this problem?” You did not expect this scenario in MRT, but
you want to become the best engineer and out of pure altruism, you decided to help the girl. She showed you
the paper.

“Please convert this Transfer Function into a State Space Representation, Onee-chan.” (100 points)
“Onee-chan, I’ll give you a bonus if you could tell me what form your state space representation is in.” (10 points)

All kinds of thoughts run through your mind of the possible reward that could be given to you once you
successfully helped her.

1) Max of 5 sentences, what info could you get from the TF?
3) (10 points)
 E.g. How many inputs, outputs?
2) If the goal is to convert the TF into State Space in cascade
form, list down the steps to do it. (30 points)
3) Ka = Kb=1, K0=2, K1=3, K2=4, K3=5, obtain the cascade
form of this TF. Give the signal flow graph and State Space
equation in matrix form. (60 points)
4) Diagonalize the matrix using eigenvalues and
transformation matrix. (60 points)
5) Bonus: Give the Observer Canonical Form. (30 points)
4)

1) Create a State Space

Representation from the
diagram above. Your final
answer must be in matrix form.
(50 pts)
2) Create your own output
equation. (10 pts)

Above is a schematic description of a water cycle.

 Ma is the amount of water in the atmosphere.

 Ms is the amount of water in the ocean.
 Mv is the amount of water in organism.
 Ms is the amount of water on land.
 Ue is the solar energy input from the sun.
 The flow rate of water into any given location(box) is proportional to the amount of water in the
previous location, and the flow rate out of water is proportional to the amount of water in its own
location.

Bonus: Pick any system you like and create a state space representation of it. (10-50 points)
