Module 2: Social Science Correlation with other subjects

Analysis.
Answer the following questions:
1. From the seven nature of Social Sciences, choose 5 for which you are to expound its
definition and give an example.

 A unique combination of various discipline.

Social Science is considered a subject that has a unique combination of various
disciplines, because it is the only subject/study that has a multi-faceted and infinite scope
which as vast and wide as the world. For a very reason that social science is dynamic. It
keeps on changing, broadening, and becoming more complex as new concepts and ideas
emerged in the world. Anything you see right now could be part of social science.
Like for example in learning or teaching the factors of production. Within the said
topic, you are not only going to go through the definition of production itself, learners
need to know the following: why people must produce a product (Economics), how
people can produce a product? (Arts), how was the concept of production started?
(History and Sociology), what is the role of government to the growth of industries?
(Political Science).

 A Realistic Course of Study

Social Science is a realistic course of study because its content is not merely about the
study of how people live and organize themselves in society, but the way of its study must
be SCIENTIFIC. Meaning to say everything in the subject/study is factual and undergone
systemic approach and procedures Therefore Social science, offer the learners an
authoritative and compelling guide to critical realism and its implications for social
theory and for the practice of social science.
Like for example, SSG officers created a petition to the school administrators to
reconsider the online class platform. So, what pushes the SSG Officers to initiate an
appeal? It’s because they are driven by the principles they learned from social science,
which let them to investigate the problem, to know the reality, and to know what would
be the best possible solution they could offer to the studentry.

 A study of Man’s Development through Ages

Social Science provide us a comprehensive knowledge on how human develop through
times. And through that knowledge we learn from it, which shapes our present life and
give us directions for our future actions. Understanding human development through
ages, deeply and in context, can help us better understand human wisdom and human
fallibility. This, in turn, can help us become more creative, innovative, and effective
citizens. Likewise, it can help us also to better understand our own life experiences and
life course. It can foster enhanced self-understanding and personal growth.
Like for example, before, women were not visible in the social world. They stay only at
their homes, obliged to do household chores and to serve the men members of the family
who only had the opportunity to go out and find a living. But years go by, women learned
that they they can do also what men can do. So through ages, the ability of women
developed, until such time that women contribute largely in our society. In our present
times, they are now empowered where they are experiencing equal rights with men.

 Aims at preparing the learners for wholesome social learning.

By providing relevant information and knowledge, skills and attitudes, the study of
social science prepares students to grow up as active, responsible, and reflective
members of society. It also teachers them to address societal and global concerns using
literature, technology and other identifiable community resources. Therefore, Social
Sciences not only help students in gaining analytical and reasoning skills, but also
prepare them to do multifaceted role.
Like for example, a student who deeply and passionately study social science becomes
an incredible, inspiring and goal-driven government official, who contribute and serve
the nation meaningfully.

 It forms an important part of the core-curriculum

Social Science comprise a broad range of liberal arts and humanities courses such as
psychology, anthropology, sociology, education, law, history, natural sciences, arts,
linguistics, political science and management. These help students scientifically analyse
society, human behaviour patterns, and global historical changes, which are very
essential in leading man into a successful life. Therefore, social science is one of the
most important field in the core-curriculum as this filed can help students to gain
analytical, research and reasoning skills, and prepare them for complex situations and
multifaceted workplace projects.
Like for example, a student of anthropology reviews texts to find a relation between
ideas. So Social science build on skills to analyse ideas or find commonalities and
disparities.

2. How is Social Science related to other discipline? Give proof

Social Science is related to other discipline because simply this field is a scholastic
discipline or scientific field that investigates human society. So since it is believed that
the human society is dynamic, and it is as vast and wide as the world itself and as lengthy
as the history of man, many other discipline must be integrated to systematically study
the relationship of man to the society. In fact, it is being said, that there is no school
subject that is not related with social studies in some form or other. In this sense,
everything that happened till date has got some kind of denotations or connotations with
some branches of Social Science.
One of the proofs is the relation of Social Science to Mathematics. Upon teaching
social science, students are taught to be more accurate, to learn how to manage time and
money, and some concepts under the components of Economics. Some example of lessons
that includes mathematics is identifying degrees of latitudes and longitudes, making
timeline of events, crafting graphs, and etc.

3. Compare and Contrast the aims and objective of teaching Social Science in the elementary
(Primary), middle (secondary) and senior high level.

 Elementary (Primary)
In the Philippine educational settings, the aim of teaching Social Science is focuses
mainly on discovery of the social world and environment of the child. For example, in
kindergarten, children are taught about ‘Ako at ang aking Kapwa” (Me and my Peers),
in Grade 1 the content is all about “Ako, ang aking Pamilya at Paaralan” (Me, my
Family and School), in Grade 2 is “Ang aking Komunidad, Noon at Ngayon” (My
Community, Then and Now), in Grade 3 is “Ang Mga lalawigan ng aking rehiyon” in
Grade 4 is “Ang Bansang Pilipinas”, in Grade 5 “Pagbuo ng Pilipinas bilang Nayon”
and while in Grade-6 is “Mga Hamon and tugon sa Pagkabansa”. As we notice, the
content is started from simple going to more complex, but the central idea is immersing
young learners with knowledge about society. And tt is to help young learners the
following:
To explore and understand their social and cultural environment.
To develop in the child the sense of belonging to the society through a gradual
widening of his mental horizon from his home and school to the wider world.
To encourage the child to understand that we are striving to build a better life for
all.

 Middle (Secondary)
If in the elementary stage, the main focus there is more on the environment of a child in local
arena, in middle stage or in Secondary level the range is wider encompassing the social world
outside the country. In the Secondary Araling Panlipunan Curriculum the major branches of
social studies (Geography, History, Culture and Society, Civics and Government, and
Economics) are all incorporated in every Year level. Like for example in Grade 7, they
are taught about “Araling Asyano” in which the content is all about the geography,
history, culture, society, government, and economic growth of the different nations in
Asia. After that, as students step in Grade-8, they will be now taught about the
“Kasaysayan ng Daigdig” (World History), which the description is all about
understanding and giving importance of unity in facing world challenges despite
differences in terms of geography, history, culture, society, government, and economic
systems. In Grade 9, the student will be now focusing on Economics. Meanwhile, in
Grade 10, the content is about ‘Mga Kontemporaryong Isyu” where students are
expected to acquire an understanding of the contemporary issues and challenges in terms
of economy, environment, human rights, politics, education, and civic responsibilities.
So in general, as we observed, the aims of teaching social studies in secondary is more
broader and sophisticated which may let also learners to acquire the following :
Promote an understanding of the processes of change and development through
which human societies have evolved to their present stage of their development;
Promote an understanding of the common roots of human civilization and an
appreciation of basic unity of mankind;
Develop an appreciation of the contributions made by various cultures to the total
heritage of mankind.

 Senior High School Level

In Philippine curriculum, teaching Social Studies in Senior High School Level is being
integrated in the subject of Personal Development and Understanding Culture, Politics
and Society. Where both subjects serve as the assimilation of the entire topics the
students have learned from elementary and secondary stage. So since it is a spiral
progression, aims and objectives in Senior High School Level is almost the same level to
tertiary stage. The following are:
To develop students’ awareness of cultural, social, and political dynamics, and
sensitivity to cultural diversity;
Provide them with understanding of how culture, human agency, society and politics
works;
And engage them in the examination, of the country’s current human development.

4. How does Social Science contribute to develop national and international understanding?
Give proofs

Social Science contributes to develop national and international understanding through

providing ideas about human culture, human agency, society and politics, and by enabling
learners to recognize cultural relativism and social inclusiveness to overcome prejudices.
Furthermore social science develop the social and cultural competence among young learners to
guide their interactions with groups, communities, networks, and institution.
With that, it social science doesn’t only gives learners an insight into socio-economic
condition that existed in the past but also makes them aware the present social, economic, and
political conditions as well as its problems and challenges. This in turn would enable them to
make significant contributions towards the solution of these problems.

Application
The following are reasons why there is a need to study Social Science at any level. Give concrete
example as to how is each reason possible. Base you example from the Philippine setting.
Reasons why we need social science

1. Social Sciences helps us imagine alternative futures

 As the country currently facing the COVID-19 Pandemic, government adopted the same
alternative strategy and protocols of what countries did during the past pandemics such as SARS-
COV, Spanish Flu, H1N1 Pandemic etc.to avoid the uncontrolled spread of the disease. So with
history, we learned what to do in the present.

2. Social science can help us make sense of our finances.

 By knowing the importance of tertiary education especially to the unprivileged students, the
government decided to allot a huge budget making Tertiary education free from all Universities.
3. Social scientists contribute to our health and well‐being.
 TV programs like Healing Galing is aired on television with a health expert host to impart tips
and knowledge about using herbal plants for medication

4. Social science might save your life.

Like what happened during the devastation of Super typhoon Yolanda , if only people aware
the possibility of storm surge, they probably didn’t stay in astrodome which is only meter away
from the ocean

5. Social science can make your neighbourhood safer.

 Some of the Filipino values are being warm and hospitable. Filipino fund of making friends with
their neighbour to establish good relationship, so that in case of need and emergency there’s
someone they can lean on.

6. We need social scientists as public intellectuals.

 Jessica Soho hosting the 2016 Presidential Debates, asking the candidates about their insights on
a particular issue to help viewers choose their bet.

7. Social science can improve our children’s lives and education.

 With the awareness of International Standard, former President Benigno Aquino shifted the
DepEd old curriculum to K-12 Curriculum to level the quality of education to international
standards and make Filipino learners globally competitive.

8. Social science can change the world for the better.

 Many Non-government organizations and charities in the Philippines are established such as
PCSO, Philippine Red Cross, Child Hope Asia, and etc. to promote nationalism and to help the
nation to progress.

9. Social science can broaden your horizons.

 A school conducted a debate among students about if Federalism is applicable to our country or
not. With this students will be immersed into critical thinking and to think beyond the limit,
10. We need social science to guarantee our democracy.
 Way back on February 22, 1986, thousands of Filipino People participate in the non-violent
revolution called People Power Revolution or known as EDSA Revolution. The aims are to end
the 20-year presidential term of Ferdinand Marcos and to restore the democracy in the
Philippines. So with awareness of social science, Filipinos learned to fight their democracy.
