QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Q: What is the significance of a statue which has Mary stepping on a snake?
A: These statues (and the Miraculous Medal) associate Mary with the woman in Chapter 3 of
Genesis and the woman clothed with the sun in Chapter 12 of Revelation.
Chapter 12 of Revelation speaks of the woman clothed with the sun whose son the dragon
seeks to devour. In both instances the serpent or snake represents the devil and evil. Both pas-
sages are applied to Mary as the woman whose offspring will conquer Satan.
Around 1830 St. Catherine Labouré received a vision of the Blessed Virgin and was told to
have a medal struck. On the front of the medal was to be the figure of Mary standing atop a
globe representing the earth. And she was to be shown crushing the head of a serpent with her
feet.
The medal was made and because of the miracles associated with it has come to be known as
the Miraculous Medal. In the catalogs of religious articles, you will find statues called Our
Lady of Grace which picture Mary standing on a globe with a serpent beneath her feet.

Military Council of Catholic Women (MCCW)
There will be NO faith study on Feb 21st due to the holiday. Faith Study will

MCCW is having a clothing drive the month of February, all items will be donated to St
Vincent De Paul Respite Center in honor of Deacon Foster. The following items are
needed, new and slightly used adult clothing. There will be a box under the MCCW table
located at the back of the church, please leave your items in the box. Thank you!

Saint Michael’s Bible Study on Tues-

A Woman of God is Rooted and Grounded in Christ
Today's generation of women are often distracted and fascinated with change. They are quick to

move from one thing to another without much thought. For example, boyfriends are considered tem-
porary and often traded on a whim. Jobs are easy replaced and houses are traded up. Women want
new hair styles and new clothes. Those who can afford it will pay a smaller nose, larger breasts and
tighter face. These same women have no problem ending a marriage because it's no longer exciting.
The list goes on, spiraling down into a bottomless pit of unhappiness and restlessness.
God's Word is clear: those that run after whatever new and exciting
thing comes their way are not grounded. They have no foundation to
hold them down when the storms of life come. They have no founda-
tion to hold them up when the rug is pulled out from underneath them.
Their life is built on sand. When the winds come and the rains fall,
everything they have is washed away and they are left completely dev-
astated. This is not the way God designed women to live their lives.
Jesus Christ was made to be the Rock, the firm foundation of hope and
strength. Upon that Rock, Christian women are called to build their lives. Life can change, but He
never does. People and circumstances can disappoint, but Jesus remains a faithful companion.
The Apostle Paul understood the importance of making Jesus Christ the foundation of life: "Let your
roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the
truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness." (Colossians 2:7, NLT) A woman
who allows her roots to tap into the life-giving and life-sustaining Person of Jesus Christ will always
find strength.
Some change is inevitable. But a woman who is secure in Christ will not be moved unless He
moves her. Circumstances going on around her do not scare a godly woman. She may see the
storm coming, but she knows that her house is built upon the Rock. Even changes within herself
do not give her a reason to fear. A woman planted in God may feel the emotions rising. She
might even want to give in to them at times. But a woman who fears the Lord keeps her eyes
on the One who carries her. She is committed to Him, and dedicated to the life that He
has called her to. For this, she will never be put to shame.
