A FASHIONABLE WEDDING
You can learn a lot about a culture from looking at wedding dresses. In Medieval times,
kings used their children´s wedding to show how rich and important they were. That´s
why Medieval brides whose families were wealthy, wore wedding dresses that were
made from expensive materials. Fur and silk were often used instead of cotton.
Wedding dresses usually reflect the fashion of the time. In 1920s, for example, short
skirts were fashionable, so brides wore wedding dresses that were short. But in the
1940s, things changed. At that time, brides began wearing long, formal dresses at their
weddings, and this style of wedding dress is still very popular.
Sometimes a wedding dress becomes fashionable after an important person wears it. In
the West, white wedding dresses became popular in 1840 when Queen Victoria got
married in one. Brides who saw her wedding photograph decided to wear a dress like
hers.
Today, women have got more fashion choices. Some brides choose not to wear
traditional wedding dresses. They think these dresses are old-fashioned and they prefer
to wear something that is trendier. Other brides go to special shops where dresses from
another period are sold. Not every wedding dress is acceptable, however. People don´t
usually like to see a bride in black or red but generally, there are few rules. The most
important thing is that the bride should like what she´s wearing. After all, it´s her wedding
