Explain the ways in which we can get access to the internet?


1. Description of at least 6 different ways of accessing the internet.
2. Hardware involved in each case.
3. Name and Location of ISP in each case
4. Pros and Cons of each case.

Answer

1- ) Cable:

It is the most widely used type of home broadband connection, covering over half of the
home broadband market. It is found everywhere across the country where TV is service available.

 Hardware used in this type of connection is cable line or coaxial cable which has extremely
higher speeds than simple cable, modem and wires.
 The ISP provider in this case is the Cable Company from which TV connection is obtained.

Pros Cons
 Transmission over several channels  Non availability in rural areas.

2- ) DSL:

DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. It also uses a telephone line phenomenon.

 The hardware used in this is Router, DSL modem and Wires.


 The ISP provider is the telephone connection provider.

residents to the switching center.
 Unlimited bandwidth.  Speed may reduce at peak hours.

3- ) Conventional Dial-Up:

It uses an old type of connection setup. A dial up modem is


connected using a standard telephone jack with twisted pair telephone cabling.

 The hardware used in this is dial up modem and telephone wires.


 The ISP provider is the Telephone Service provider.

Pros Cons
 Inexpensive hardware  Terribly low speeds.

4-)Satellite connections:

This is the way in which internet can be accessed through satellites. The
data is sent from satellite to user’s equipment, translated and then decoded.

 The hardware involved in this case is satellite dish receiver and satellite modem.
 The ISP provider is the satellite company.

 Very High speed internet access.  More expensive than DSL.
 Connection speed is not troubled  Large setup fee and regular

5- ) Broadband over Fiber:

It is a relatively new type of very fast internet connection


available to homes and office buildings. It is available to those who have fiber optic
cabling running near them. This type is generally called BoF (Broadband over Fiber)
or FTTP (Fiber To The Premises). This connection is usually provided by the
telephone companies in order to upgrade their overall infrastructure.

 Hardware involved in this case is Fiber optic cable, Switches, and cables.
 The ISP provider is usually different such as a private company, Verizon,
google etc.

Pros Cons
 Speeds crossing gigabyte barrier.  Limited availability.
 Reliable service  A much higher price tag.

6- ) Mobile Wireless or Wi-Fi:

Mobile Wireless internet access is the most commonly


used type with smartphones and media tablets to keep them connected to the internet.
The biggest advantage is that it is a wireless facility. A data plan is needed to access
the internet. The speed of this connection is usually dependent on the cellular
standards named as 3G and 4G,having speeds anywhere between 1Mbps to 30 Mbps.

 The hardware used in this case is only a compatible mobile device or a laptop
having a Network Interface Card or NIC.
 The ISP provider is cellular company which provides internet.

Pros Cons
 Flexible working  Prior to Climate conditions.
 Increased security  Signal strength sensitivity.
