Executive summary

This report aims to show what I saw in my internship program when I was working in MOENCO dire
dawa branch of Toyota Company in the four months. It will show what I saw in the companies, and how I worked
and practiced three years study of my class.

The internship shows me how important an automotive engineering is in the world and even in Ethiopia.
In the four months I tried to see what a problem is in those companies like shortage of replace part of engine.

It is clear that using well trained man power is the ultimate choice of companies to be competent in the
market and manufacture good quality products. A transformation of technology from one country to other is time
depended, the working area have to be comfortable for workers in any factory, materials also should be fully
prepared for safe working environment .without having all this jobs cannot be done purely and safely.

The following recommendations are suggested

 Supplying materials for all workers

 Educating workers using different trainings
 Make Trust on our Ethiopian engineers
 Making technically well developed market research

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION TO Motor & Engineering Company of Ethiopia Limited S.C

1.1 History of MOENCO

The motor and engineering company of Ethiopia (MOENCO) is one of the Toyota motor
company’s product distributors in the Ethiopia. The Toyota motor company is originally settled in
Tokyo Japan. But it has many branch or lead company in different country of the world; like MOENCO
in Ethiopia.

MOENCO (Motor & Engineering Company of Ethiopia Limited S.C) established in the heart of
Addis Ababa, around the area commonly known as Mexico, a small garage with a capital of 200, 000
Ethiopian birr was founded by Mr. Y. D. Lappine on January 1959 in a small rented house. His far
sighted vision became reality with the help of other resourceful people, such as Ato Menasseh Lemma,
the Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia, and the boss of Imperial Insurance Company. Nine years
later, MOENCO took over the TOYOTA franchise business for Ethiopia when Inchcape, a London
based international organization, became a major share holder and injected a considerable amount of
capital. This was a milestone moment in the firm’s journey to become the MOENCO of today.
MOENCO Today:-the largest automotive company in the country, representing over 20 brands. It
has grown both in terms of size and in terms of the modernization of its service shops and parts
distribution centers, which display a passion for creating the ultimate customer experience. In addition to
the TOYOTA business, at different times MOENCO used to represent General Motors for various types of
American vehicles and trucks; Ingersoll-Rand; WABCO, Pettibow; Universal; DuPont; General Tire; Frigidaire;
Zanussi; and Thomas De La Rue & Co. of England.

Logo and branding1

In 1936, Toyota entered the passenger car market with its Model AA and held a competition
to establish a new logo emphasizing speed for its new product line. After receiving 27,000 entries,
one was selected that additionally resulted in a change of its moniker to "Toyota" from the family
name "Toyoda". The new name was believed to sound better, and its eight-stroke count in the
Japanese language was associated with wealth and good fortune. The original logo no longer is found
on its vehicles, but remains the corporate emblem used in Japan.

Fig -1 Toyota logo

1|Page
The new logo started appearing on all printed material, advertisements, dealer signage, and the
vehicles themselves in 1990.

Still, no guidelines existed for the use of the brand name, "TOYOTA", which was used
throughout most of the world, which led to inconsistencies in its worldwide marketing campaigns.

Worldwide presence

Toyota has factories in most parts of the world, manufacturing or assembling vehicles for local
markets. Toyota has manufacturing or assembly plants in Japan, Australia, India, Sri Lanka, Canada,
Indonesia, Poland, South Africa, Turkey, Colombia, the Uk, the United States, France, Brazil, Portugal,
and more recently, Argentina, Czech Republic, Mexico, Malaysia, Thailand, Pakistan, Egypt, China,
Vietnam, Venezuela, the Philippines, Ethiopia, and Russia.

 MOENCO has 871 highly skilled & professional employees, 7 Branches in Ethiopia, 12 Sub-
Dealers and More than 10 brand partners.

The head office of MOENCO is found in Addis Ababa. The company has many branches in Ethiopia that
can give good services. Some of the branches are:-

 Adama

 Bahirdar

 Diredawa

 Hawassa

 Now, I am trained in Dire Dawa branch, this branch company is started to its work since five
years about a capital of thirty million (30,000,000) Ethiopian birr. This branch only provides
Toyota vehicle service and Toyota quality number one spare parts. There is no either vehicle

service for the vehicles. The company assigns workers (mechanics) in every lifts in order to give quality
services and to deliver the vehicles to the customers in short period of time.

The workers (mechanic) controlled or managed by the person called Forman. The company prepared job
card in the reception when the customers comes to get service for their car. This card contains the:
-performance of the vehicle

-history of the vehicle and

-customer’s report about the vehicle problems that visualize during driving
The mechanics receive the vehicles with their prepared job card from the reception through Forman.
They try to understand the report (information) that written on the job card and inspect the vehicle
visually if there is another problem. The service that is given in this section is periodic maintenance

2.1.3 Unit Rebuild (engine section)

This is the section where the engine is overhauled. Firstly the engine has to perform on-vehicle test. If
the vehicle has one of the following problems it will be overhauled
 If the oil consumption is high
 If there is overheating
 If the engine rpm is greater or lower than specification
 If there is high knock and noise with bad smoke
If any of this happen the engine will un-mounted from the car and brought to the engine
servicing room. In the engine shop the engine will be disassembled and each part will be cleaned
by petrol, water and air

12 | P a g e
Then each part will be inspected for
 Cracking
 Bending and
 wearing
The following parts will be inspected visually and simple measuring tools and if the mechanic sees
any uncertainty they will be sent to machine shop (main office) for measurement and re-facing process
 Cylinder head
 Cylinder block
 Connecting rod
 Crankshaft
 Camshaft
The other parts will be inspected and replaced if there is any deviation from specification. Then after the
engine will be assembled and tested on test bench. If everything is good to go the engine will be
mounted on the vehicle and road test will follow.

2.2 ENGINERING METHODES, TOOLS AND TECNIQUES

2.2.1 Tools

The tools that we have been use to perform our tasks in the mechanics work are those tools that we
use in mechanical engineering workshop. There are two division of tools based on the source of energy
applied on the tools in the maintenance and service of vehicle. These are;

A. Hand tools which we apply our force to operate with them and

B. Power tools which operate by electric, compressed air or hydraulic pressure

A. The Most Important Hand Tools are the following

1. Wrenches:
Top quality wrenches are forged from fine-grade tool steel, machined to close tolerances, hardened and
tempered for long service life. Wrenches are used to turn screws, nuts, and bolts with hexagonal heads. There
are 4 types of wrenches. Open end, box (closed), combination wrenches and adjustable wrenches.

13 | P a g e
A. OPEN-END WRENCHES
Are simplest to use and usually have different size on each end. Both ends are opened.
 do not provide as strong a grip as a box-ended wrench
 slip on the nut or bolt head from the side
 two flat surfaces parallel to each other hold onto parallel sides of nut or bolt-head
 tend to slip or round the corners if too much pressure is required
 easier to use most instances
B. box end wrenches

 Made to grip all sides of nut or bolt head

 Prevents slippage
 Must be slipped over the end of nut or bolt-head
 Box end wrenches will normally have two different sizes per wrench
 Size of wrench refers to nut or bolt head dimensions

C .combination wrenches

 box end on one end and open end on the other

 both ends will usually be the same size
 Gives the advantage of wrench that will not slip as easily to start a nut, but one that is easier to
slide on and off the nut once it has been loosened.

D. adjustable wrenches

 (crescent wrench)
 has provision for adjusting the opening for different size nuts or bolt heads
 Length of wrench will correspond with jaw capacity.
 for light loads can be used in either direction
 Greatest strength is with pressure being applied to side of wrench with fixed jaw.

2. SNAP RING PLIER

14 | P a g e
• two types - external snap rings and external snap rings
• internal snap rings require contracting jaws
• external snap rings require expanding jaws
• some will have serrated jaw surfaces to prevent the snap ring from slipping, while others have
tips on the end of the jaws to fit in holes in the snap ring

3. Ratchets, SOCKET WRENCH SET

They are used to remove nuts from the joint and tighten nuts with bolts. It has detachable parts called, socket
and extension.

The socket wrench is used in combination with different types of handles and extension bars for safe and
speedy loosening and tightening in difficult positions.

4. Pliers (pinesaps)

They are used to grip different size of materials. Used for holding, gripping, cutting, and crimping. Usually forged
from hardened steel and then machined.

5. Chisel

Chisels are for cutting of damaged or badly rusted nuts, bolts, and rivet heads. There are various chisel shapes.
Use common sense when selecting a chisel shape. They are driven by hammer to cut metal by holding it in one
hand and the hammer by the other hand.

15 | P a g e
6. Screw driver

They are used to drive or turn screws. It can be flat or Philips head

7. Feeler Gauge

An accurately manufactured strip of metal used to factor the gap or clearance between two components. Used
for: Piston ring gap, Piston ring side clearance, Connecting rod side clearance Warpage, measuring crankshaft
end float.

Special service tool (SST)

Valve guide bushing remover and replacer set, valve spring compressor, attachment, combustion
chamber remover, crank shaft holding tool, connecting rod bushing removal and replacer, engine adjust
kit, Toyota electrical tester etc

2.2.2 ENGINERING METHODS

Welding: WELDING is the basic permanent joining method of broken parts of vehicles. Also this welding is used
for cutting purpose to avoid unwanted metal part or when there is problem in nuts and bolts joint we cut with
welding and avoid from the car.

16 | P a g e
Riveting: Riveting Is also a permanent joining method of mechanical elements, which is mainly applicable for
joining brake lining and brake shoe in drum brake.

Bolts and screws: The tightening and loosening of bolts and screws are the back bone of the car maintenance
and service because to do the required work, first the bolts and screws must be loosen and after maintenance

Extension of arms in tightening and loosening

Lifting mechanism: Lifting of cars has a great role in the maintenance and service of cars, for wheel
hub service and to look the underside of car parts maintenance. This is one of the mechanical
engineering methods to lift things which have weight above man's lifting ability such that we have
learned in machine elements about power screws, bottle jacks and scissor jacks etc.

Lubrication: most of the movable part of a car has their specific lubricating oil which is used for
smooth motion and heat dissipation. But we also use lubrication to disassemble mechanical elements
which are difficult to disassemble by mechanical force .For example inner race of a bearing and shaft
can be disassemble by lubrication then applying smallest mechanical force.

Cutting: is used in mechanics where necessarily mostly it is applicable for body works. The most
widely used mechanical engineering methods and tools .those joints must be tightened properly.

2.3- The work task that I have been executing

Since I was working in engine section I was involved in each work tasks, which includes;

- Removal of an engine from vehicle

- Help during the Maintain ace of an engine
- Assists the technicians in assembly& disassembled of an engine.
- Cleaning of an engine block, valve lifters, cylinder heads & blocks
- Put my significant role in the arrangement of valve lifters during the assembly process.
- Preparing working equipment’s during work for the mechanics
- Cheek valve lifter with oil test
- Belt adjustment after the engine assembly completed

2.4- procedures & methods I have been using

Procedures

As I am engaged in the section the tasks that executes in the section, working materials &equipment’s
names described to me briefly by the head of the section. after that I was try to know the basic tasks &
working instruments, visual inspection during the task , knowing & using different measuring
instruments , proper material handling and storage in the section then participates in each work tasks
attentively.

17 | P a g e
Methods

The methods that I have been used to cope with the workers in the section includes;

Approaches friendly each worker in the section in order to share their

knowledge.
By giving such a great respect for the workers
Frequently ask to know what they have been doing & why
Referring manuals of each engine types –in lunch time or when I was
free
Discussing with my friend and Using internet & other sources

2.5- challenges I have been facing

Among the challenges that I have been facing;

 Safety
- There is no available safety shoe, glass/during welding
- Safety glove
 Lack of hoist cranes –which leads sometimes to convey engine
blocks manually which are sharp edges.
 Manual replacement of brake drum- which is sharp edge, hot,
and it may damage the vehicle.
 Backward removal of engine oils- which is carcinogen.
 Usage of traditional nomenclature of materials, devices
&equipment’s.
 Some tasks are done by experience, not according to the
manual
 Unable to view the work flows –since we are blocked the
place where we have placed.

2.6-Measures I have been taken in order to overcome challenges

 Safety first-I have prepare my own safety shoe ,cloth & glass
 Try to learn traditional nomenclatures
 Use university reference books
 Usage of university library internet center
 Communicate friendly with company advisor about the working condition
 Try to borrow manuals from the company /to cope with the work task
 Communicate clearly the workers
 discus the problems with my friend

18 | P a g e
 Try my best to solve some of the problems with the workers. At this condition I decide.

2.7- Benefits Gained From the Internship

2.7.1 Practical skill improvement

Internship improves practical skill which is gained from theoretical knowledge. In addition to this
it will give a chance to see, know & using different machines, mechanisms, hydraulic, measuring
devices, turbo systems also different inspections. The position I was there gives a chance to relate
the courses I have learned mechanism courses, machine element and work shop practice with
what I was done. In addition to this I had gained answer for the following questions. What does
automotive engineer do? They work on variety of motor vehicles such as cars, tracks, motors, and
motor cycles, commercial vehicle and recreational vehicle. As such engineer is required to design
develop, improve and modify a variety of operating system and effective functioning of safety
systems. They also able to develop and organize testing procedures and analyses and interoperate
data and give orders based on data interpretation. I also understand that conducting a research is
the task of automotive engineer.

Generally I had a chance to solve my attitude that things I was expected such an easy task required
skill. ‘Practice makes perfect’.

2.7.2 Upgrades theoretical knowledge

As I am engaged in the company through different processes I had a chance to develop theoretical knowledge. I
have minimized the gap between the academic and theoretical knowledge of some courses with the
practical one through understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic applications, principle and applications
of some turbo machines like pumps & funs, AC of car ,car radiators etc.

Through the inter I was able to see different mechanisms which I was studied in the class. For example
about Crank shafts- how it works/ the mechanism, components, function ,motion, application, assembly
and disassembly .also I had a chance to visualized what I was studied theoretically in class about gear
box. Gearbox-components, arrangement, function, how assemble etc.

A chance to see how a car radiator and AC worked related with the course I studied heat and mass
transfer. Generally gives a chance to see the real world which seems illusion for us during lecture class.

2.7.3 Develop Team work skill

Team work is work performed by a group with a common goal. Some activities require the use of team
brain& physical power to solve the problems in automotive industries. In the company where I was
experiencing my semester internship there was different group or team works. For example a group of
workers are collaborated to assemble and disassemble the engine to diagnose the causes for the decrease
in the power of the engine using overhead a chain crane. The second example workers may work in a
team to diagnose noise and troubles in an automotive transmission and transaxles. I was also organized
to apply and share knowledge on different working areas. From these and other team works, I have
gained different team playing skills. Among there

19 | P a g e
1. Fostering open communication. This provided the ability to share our opinions and thoughts on
different ideas to solve problems arises during work. From this I under stood that how much a free
discussion motivates the members of a team to imagine and speak out their ideas about the task
they are intended to work. In addition this free communication and deal makes us as effective and
power full as possible.
2. Share knowledge. Team work has the advantage of sharing different ideas, suggestions, and
knowledge about specific thing. Especially for us we had a chance to ask workers easily since we
are working in a team.
3. Able to measuring the progresses. After we had set the goal that is accomplishing the project we
scheduled specific goals a dead line for the entire goal. Then we tried to assess and measure each
scheduled time as much as possible. This enabled me that knowing whether efforts and activities
are headed in the right direction is a vital skill for successful goal achievement. Measuring the
progress enabled us to review our efforts and identify errors, and make the required changes.
4. Collaboration. Before we were organized in a team and signed on the project, we were not
understand that collaboration is a key for setting goals and for over project to go well. But
After the started to collaborated, I know that it is a medic for airing some one’s talent and skills
important way to be able to achieve the goals.

2.7.4 Entrepreneurship skills

An entrepreneur is a person who is willing to start a new enterprise and accept full responsibility
for the outcome. That is a person owns or manages a business enterprise and makes money through
risks and initiatives. Entrepreneurship skills are skill that a person needs necessarily to have to start,
develop, finance and market his own home business enterprise. There entrepreneurship skills include
personal attribute business and management capabilities. Regarding to entrepreneurship skills, during
semester internship period, it tried to know at least five skills that a person should know before he to
start up or run his own business. These skills are described below.
1. Sales and marketing skills. A business is nothing if it has no customers. An entrepreneur may have
a quality product or service, but if no one is looking at this product and service, he is obligated to
better think why he is in the business in the first place. To sustain in development upgrade the

2. Financial know-how. For entrepreneur in the business to make handling money well is most
important skill. This include, knowing how to stretch the startup capital, spending only when
needed and doing with the equipment’s that are on the hand. Identifying the best pricing structure
for the business is essential part of this skill to get the best kind of return for products and survives
as success in business is not based on how much the start-up capital was large, such expenses
money, energy and time invested business are considered during product or service for the

an entrepreneur. At the morning while wakeup, entrepreneurs must have a clear idea of the things
they must do for the day. From this I understand that knowing how to manage time and prioritize
tasks. This skill requires that knowing when to stop, when to leave work, and begin doing other
rolls (if any) like families. Entrepreneurs able to know how to keep their home life separate from

2.7.5 Leadership skill

There are good qualities that one leader must have in order to work successfully and must be an
example for other workers and allowing the growth and profit of the company to go high and creating
good working condition for workers.

This skill helps me to know and develop qualities of a good leader which will be one of my duties in the
future. I observed such skills from my mentor which is the manager of Design &Development section and I
think he has good qualities as a leader. The good qualities I observed from him and one leader has to be;

Beginning every work with plan and Finishing works just in time
Initiative to work and Willingness to serve others
Ability & desire to keep learning
willingness to make change
willingness to take responsibilities
understanding people and ability to handle stress
ability to solve problems and having self-discipline
good self-image and give encouragement

Therefore, this is good qualities I have identified and I have already gained some qualities and practicing
them the others.

2.7.6 Work ethics

The other benefit that I gain from the intern is work ethics. Work ethics include not only how one
feels about their job, career or vocation, but also how one does his/her job or responsibilities. Attitude,
behavior, respect communication and interaction are vital for someone to get along with others in a
working area. Accountability, honesty (not lying, cheating), doing a job well, valuing what one does,
having a sense of purpose and feeling and being a part of a greater vision or plan are vital work ethics. In
the semester internship experience, period, I gained a knowledge of work ethics in two aspects one as an
engineer and two as worker in general.

In addition to the above point of work ethics, professionalism, I also had tried to understand different
work ethics as worker in general during internship period among them;

1) Punctuality. Arriving to the work at the scheduled time is the characteristics of a worker with a
strong understanding of good work ethics. Moreover, arrive to the work at least ten minute earlier
the scheduled start time has a contributing effect on the worker. This offers the ability to mentally
prepare for tasks. Plan to work the working hours agreed up on. This also able to workers to put

their signature as an attendance. Since I was there ‘the primary measurement of a good worker is
punctuality’ said the manager, which shapes me about time management, the value of half second
and punctuality. Thanks a lot to the manager.
2) Able to show professional behaviors at all times.
3) Taking responsibility: the work that a worker has done must take the responsibility .That is every
person should be responsible what he has done. For example I was responsible for brake shoe
replacement that I have done for a customer vehicle.
4) Appropriate dressing: in the company every worker should ware appropriately in the work time .in
appropriate ware May leads damage to the worker, raise safety questions etc.

5) Take care of equipment: in the company every worker has duty of care, clean, keep from an
appropriate usage of equipment.

6) Finishing duties just in time; as customers required

7) Co-operation with other workers

9) Give respect for workers
