Kansai Nerolac says input costs hitting paint margins...

In an interview with CNBC-TV18, HM Bharuka, Kansai Nerolac said the company has grown 35% in
Q4. "We grew 24% overall in the year," he added. He attributed to the slippage in margins to an
increase in raw material costs. "Raw material prices have put pressure on margins and that is one of
the worries for us.” When asked to comment on the margin picture, he said overall for the year as a
whole the company should be able to maintain the 14% margin. "The cost increase is 7% and we
are passing on a part of that increase to some of our customers in May. Crude oil prices are rising
and we have to see if costs are going to go up.” The company has two lines of business - decorative
and industrial. In the case of decorative, Bharuka said, "We are passing on about 4% to our
customers," adding, "On industrials we are talking to our customers on issues and hope to get some
price increase there as well.” The paint industry grows at 1.5-2 times the GDP of the economy, he
said. He is confident that the economy, which is expected to grow at 7.5-8% over the next few
years, augurs well for the industry, which he expects will grow at 12-14%.

Akzo Nobel India plans to raise paint prices due to rising TiO2 costs...

Decorative paints maker Akzo Nobel India Ltd plans to raise prices by 2-3 percent by May-end on
increased input costs, a top official said on Friday. “There has been hardening of input prices,
particularly (of) titanium dioxide, which is the major input for paints," Amit Jain, Managing Director
told reporters. India’s no. 3 paints maker Akzo Nobel, formerly ICI India Ltd, had cut product prices
in July 2009, he said. “When recession was on, globally, vendors started cutting down the capacities
of titanium-dioxide," he added. “With revival (of global economies), the demand-supply gap had
widened leading to a price hike.” The decorative paints industry is expected to grow 12-16 percent
in FY11, he added. The company is in talks to acquire about 75 acres of land either in Tamil Nadu or
in Karnataka to set up a new plant for which the company plans to invest 1 billion rupees, he added.
The new plant would have an annual capacity of 50 million litres, he said, adding that the company's
present capacity from three units is 90 million litres per year.

TiO2 short supply may disrupt summer construction paint jobs...

A national contractors’ group has called attention to shortages of paint use to stripe roadways. The
Associate General Contractors of America has met with state and federal transportation officials to
address the shortages just as the summer highway construction season gets started. The problem
hasn’t hit Oregon highway projects yet, said Dave Thompson, spokesman for the Oregon
Department of Transportation. ODOT orders its striping paint in March for delivery through July,
Thompson said. “Therefore, we have some already on hand, but we will need more as the
construction season goes on,” Thompson said. “So we’ll be watching the issue closely.”AGC warned
in April that titanium dioxide, used as a paint whitener, was in short supply. This month, the
shortage also hit methyl methacrylate, a sticky substance used in highway paints, because of
chemical plant breakdowns. The shortages could lead to a jump in material prices for road projects,
wrote Ken Simonson, chief economist for AGC.

Titanium dioxide-based products are recommended by both plastic surgeons and

dermatologists alike to combat the aging effect....

Minerals have been used for centuries as aids for skin health and beauty. In Ancient Egypt, minerals
were used not only for beauty, but to repel insects and protect the skin from the climate.
Inhabitants of Ancient Rome and Greece used minerals to make their complexion appear paler and
hide the effects of the sun. Each mineral have its own unique properties. These properties supply
benefits to both aesthetics as well as functionality. Mineral makeup is highly recommended for
people with acne-prone skin, allergies, rosacea and a variety of other dermatological issues. While
there has been some concern regarding allergies to certain mineral components used in these types
of cosmetics, the vast majority of these cases are due to other chemical inclusions and filler
ingredients. A few of the important minerals used in mineral cosmetics are mica and titanium oxide.
These minerals assist in creating the look of a flawless complexion. In addition, they also promote
clean and healthy skin. Many cosmetic products and sun blocks that are available can clog pores and
result in comedones and skin irritation. Mineral makeup forms a barrier between the skin and
damaging UV exposure without absorbing into the skin like many chemical-based beauty products.
This prevents breakouts and limits the absorption of potentially harmful chemicals into the skin.
Titanium dioxide provides natural protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Titanium dioxide-
based products are widely recommended by both plastic surgeons and dermatologists alike to
combat the aging effects of the sun’s rays. FDA approved its use in over-the-counter sunscreen
products, as it is considered non-carcinogenic due to its inability to permeate the healthy layers of
skin. Titanium dioxide’s natural sun blocking abilities offer a safer alternative to chemical- based sun
block for people with sensitive skin or allergies. In addition to its ability to help protect skin, titanium
dioxide is also a natural anti-inflammatory that can help soothe skin irritations. It has the greatest
covering and tinting power of any white pigment. This mineral is used in a wide variety of personal
care and beauty products as a white pigment or pacifier. It helps to reduce the transparency of
product formulas and also absorbs, reflects and scatters light, protecting the product from
deterioration.
