A thermocouple: is temperature-sensing element which converts thermal energy directly into

electrical energy

The fan limit switch

Gas valve: A valve that controls fuel flow to the burner in a gas-fired furnace or heater.

Primary limit switch: Furnace safety switch, a normally closed switch that opens if it gets too hot,

opening turns off power to the gas valve

Secondary limit switch is use for down flo furnace in case the primary fails

Transformer is a stepdown the primary is 120 and the secondary is 24 volts

 To light the burner Turn you thermostat to 80 degrees or to a setting that will demand
heat. Make sure the thermostat is in "Heat" mode. Then turn the knob on the gas valve to the
pilot position press the igniter button on the side of the gas valve which will energize the
pilot solenoid allowing gas to flow to the pilot after mins turn the knob to the on position
and release the button , the thermocouple will turn the heat energy into electrical energy
usually

 about 20 millivolts the the gas valve solenoid is energize the will open the gas valve
allowing gas to flow to the burner

Lab report

Electrical sequence of operation in the upflo the thermostat is turned to the heating mode at
above room temperature , the thermostat close which energize the primary limit switch which
energize the gas valve, which energize the primary of the transformer when the secondary of the
transformer is energized after 60 seconds the fan limit close and energize the blower motor

Electrical sequence of operation in the downflo the thermostat is turned to the heating mode at
above room temperature , the thermostat close which energize the primary and secoundary limit
switch at the same time energizing the transformer which energize the gas valve, after 20
seconds the fan limit close and energize the blower motor

Lab report

FAULT NO: 2 NO HEAT

SET THEMOSTAT TO 90 degrees

ROOM TEMP: 70 degrees

Pilot is on

Burner is off

Blower is bot energized

Use ohm meter across fan limit got a reading of 120 v which mean the fan limit switch is open

Conclusion replace fan limit switch

Time 15 mins

Wilton Paul 139760 Page 4

Lab report

FAULT NO 3

Blower does not shut off

SET THEMOSTAT

Fan auto

ROOM TEMP: 70 degrees

Pilot is on

Burner is on

Blower is motor energized

Observation

Check the fan limit use the volt meter got 0v across the fan limit which indicates the fan limit is

stuck close

Conclusion replace fan limit

Time 15mins

Lab report

Fault no. 11 no heat

SET THEMOSTAT TO 90 degrees

ROOM TEMP: 70 degrees

Pilot is on

Burner is off

Blower is not energized

Use volt meter across the limit switch 0v

Across the gas valve solenoid 24v

Conclusion solenoid can’t lift the plunger to allow gas to flow to the main burner

Replace gas valve

Time 20 mins

Lab report

Fault no 17 no heat

SET THEMOSTAT TO 90 degrees

Fan auto

ROOM TEMP: 70 degrees

Pilot is on

Burner is off

Blower is not energized

Try lighting the pilot for several min did not light

Use the ohm meter to check the millivolts across the thermocouple 20milv

Which indicate the thermocouple is bad eplace thermocouple

Time 20mins

Lab report

Fault no1 no heat

Down flo

SET THEMOSTAT TO 90 degrees

ROOM TEMP: 70 degrees

Pilot is on

Burner is off

Blower is energized

Used volt meter on the high limit thermostat 0v indicating its closed

Checked secondary limit 0v indicating its closed

Checked transformer got 24v

Check the gas valve solenoid 0v

Replace gas valve

Use thermometer across the vent there was a small temperature difference

Indicating the blower in moving too fast replace the blower

Lab report

Fault no 6

NO HEAT

SET THEMOSTAT TO 90 degrees

FAN AUTO

ROOM TEMP: 70 degrees

Pilot is OFF

Burner is on

Blower is off

Use the voltmeter across the fan limit

Primary 0v

Secondary 0v

Power before fuse 120volts

At transformer 0v indicating transformer is bad
